The Treviso urban layout is the "top" of the city on a human scale. neuralgic heart of the historical center is Piazza dei Signori, a lounge in the open air where the Treviso people always love to meet. The square, whose current name is due to the presence of the palaces of the ancient Lordship of Treviso, called a Major time, the Chain or Sedan (here was practiced by the punishment of public humiliation just called "sedan"). Framed by the square the Palace of the Prefecture and the imposing Civic Tower which houses the characteristic "Campanon". The square is one of the most representative monuments of the city center, the palace of the fourteenth century. Among the old Praetorian Palace and the famous Palace of the fourteenth century, looks out on Piazza dei Signori, the neo-Romanesque Palazzo del Podesta, now known as the Palace of the Prefecture. The building was built when the rooms used as offices, arranged around the Palace of the fourteenth century, became insufficient to accommodate the public administration. In the Venetian era, the palace served as the residence of the Podesta of Treviso that, by law, must be neither Treviso or neighboring countries subjected to the tyranny: the mayor was so devoid of his home. The appearance of the Palace of the Prefecture changed several times. In 1874-1877, the palace was rebuilt in brick, with plinth and stone moldings of Istria. Behind the Prefectural Palace it was built in 1218 the town tower, initially detached from municipal buildings. About fifty years later, during the work of enlargement of the palace, the tower was joined to the Podesta complex.
