Over the past couple of years, I've been adding native plants to my yard, largely from seed. Yesterday I counted over 20 species of native plants in my yard. I'm proud of it. I know what it does for local wildlife. It creates a mini habitat. If each person added native plant gardens, it would do a lot to make the earth a better place.

In this photo is Blue Flag Iris. I grow it in my bog among other native plants, and some non-natives. Native plants can be very unique. Blue Flag Iris has one of the most interesting flowers in comparison to other garden irises. It also has a size and shape that looks better in gardens compared to most garden center irises. It does need wet ground, though.

I'll be posting more of my native species as they flower. Many will not flower until next year, but it will be well worth the wait.

This is quite possibly one of my best "lucky" shots I've ever gotten. These guys were chillin' on the ice (pun very much intended) on a pond and as soon as I went to try and take a picture of them, they decided it was a good time to start flying. I didn't get a chance to adjust any settings and had to hope anything that resulted from my rapid clicking was going to be salvageable. This ended up being rather grey and washed out, but luckily the geese were pretty sharp so I was able to restore the sky back to it's wonderfully blue blueness. Now excuse me while I go play some duck hunter...

My morning glorys have not performed well this year and finally in September, I have a few Heavenly Blue morning glories blooming. They are so beautiful and I love to see them in my garden.

Flowers and buds. Looks like as if the "mother" flower is caring for the younger ones. Longwood Gardens.
