Originally built with agatized wood blocks and mud mortar, Agate House likely housed a single family sometime between 1050 and 1300, during the Late Pueblo II - Pueblo III Periods. The scarcity of artifacts suggests a relatively brief occupation. Due to its relatively large size, Agate House may have served as a central gathering place.
Indeed, Agate House was a part of a much larger community. When first recorded by archeologists in the 1930s, the petrified wood construction of Agate House was thought to be unique. Since then, hundreds of similar petrified wood structure sites have been found in the park, indicating a history of humanity as colorful and diverse as the building blocks of Agate House.

Built in 1866, replacing several buildings in the block that were destroyed by a fire in 1862. The buildings were constructed by Richard and Colan Goldsworthy, who were Cornish stone masons that emigrated to Mineral Point. The block has housed a variety of retail establishments over the years.
This illustrates a good reason not to go hiking in slot canyons alone. The tremendous force of the flash floods that carve slot canyons can roll quite large boulders into places where they can get wedged. The top of this one in Wire Pass was about 5 ft high ... simple enough to get down but with its overhang and smooth surface, not so simple to get back up. I would not have made it up had it not been for the help of a delightful young couple from Britain that I fell in with while in the giant chamber of Buckskin Gulch.
My 13 year old grandson, who was staying with me for the weekend, selected these fabrics. I think he did a very good job.
I've had photographer's block for over a year and this photo is my attempt at telling that story. Now, after computer troubles, the recession (still ongoing) and depression, I’m hoping I'm back to taking pictures. I've missed it.
The camera I'm holding in this picture is an old film camera I got when I was a kid. I rediscovered it and realized that there's still an undeveloped roll of film inside. I wonder if it would be possible to get that film developed after so many years.

Block 8 facade damaged by US Army artillery in November 1944. At this time the fort was garrisoned by German forces.
The arcade which was erected between 1891 and 1893 was designed by architect David C. Askew whose brief was to produce something similar to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan. The result was one of Melbourne's most richly decorated interior spaces, replete with mosaic tiled flooring, glass canopy, wrought iron and carved stone finishings. The exterior façade of the six storey office has near identical facades on Collins and Elizabeth Streets and is one of Australia's best surviving examples of the Victorian Mannerist style.
The arcade was formerly known as "Carpenter's Lane", however the precinct was widely known as "The Block". Once the works were complete, local shopkeepers successfully petitioned to have it changed to its present name.
