Ellie Q's July blocks

Hilger Block in downtown Pierre was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. Photograph from 2006.

Hilger Block (Hilger and Hengel Clothing Company / Tony Clothing Company) was built in 1883 by J.D. Hilger for a clothing store. Over the years the upstairs offices housed mainly doctors, attorneys, and insurance agency representatives.

It was the first brick commercial building constructed in Pierre, which helped secure this area as the town's primary business district. Pierre had boomed in 1881 after the arrival of the railroad and became a chartered city in 1883. The Italianate style building has narrow windows, ornamental window hoods, and stamped metal cornice with brackets.

Here are my blocks so far, I think there might be a couple more to come, not sure. I wondered what squaring each block with large white triangles, and then piecing them together as diamonds within a large diamond, would look like. Perhaps then when squaring the quilt, using spider like block outer corners. Heck, I'm not sure that makes sense to anyone, I'll draw it out.

Larry J. Pontarelli & Sons, Inc. Maybe a one-off, as this giant glass block wall appears nowhere else in the neighborhood.

Elizabeth wanted gray, red and aqua - looove this block, but I'm biased when it comes to gray!
