470ml box with movable divider, fork with case, and carry bag. Picked this up for about US$6 at Kamei in San Francisco (on Clement Street). For my blog.
Summer is here and everybody is on full vacation mode! But whether you are going to the beach, headed to an exciting overseas trip or just staying home for some bonding time with family and friends, remember that the scorching heat isn’t the only thing you should worry about.

I wasn't feeling particularly inspired to make a cute lunch this day, so I pretty much just threw it all in a box and called it ready. Do you like my half-hearted attempt putting the stars on the bun, though? That didn't do much to help things, I'm afraid.

The freezy pack is supposed to keep your lunch cool and safe. The manufacturers recommend wrapping the box tightly in a thick cloth or insulated bag to keep the contents cool for a longer period. They also recommend freezing whole lid and gel pack assembled together on a flat surface in the freezer, to ensure that everything fits together after freezing. 500ml box, non-microwaveable, bought at Daiso for US$1.50. Assembled view here. Blog entry here.

Bento lunch prep for day two: pears treated with vitamin C (so they don't brown), beef stew, rice, and chocolate oranges.
My first (I think) picture of my lunch bento and the dang thing is a terrible photo! Ah well, I've learned to NOT take the picture on a black surface...er and that I need to clean the top of my stove! Yuck!
Also, not the most Japanese of lunches, nor the most healthy...but it sounded good!
We bought two ekiben (bento boxes at the train station) and boarded a Shinkansen (bullet train) for a Kyoto day trip. I managed to conduct the bento box transaction almost entirely in Japanese. Not a tremendous accomplishment, as it involved mainly saying "hello," a couple numbers (corresponding to the boxes I wanted) and "thank you," but I'll take my victories where I can.
Scan, cleaned, cropped and enhanced of a little kawaii deer from a bento box top purchased at Japanese FIT, a Japanese "Dollar" store in the Chinatown section of Houston, Texas on Bellaire Blvd.
It makes my head spin.
Pears being treated with vitamin C. Ascorbic acid prevents browning and doesn't add flavor like lemon juice will. For a large bowl of cold water, crush 6 tablets and mix into the water. For a smaller bowl like this one, I only use 3 tablets.
The Bento Box pattern by Tracey Brookshier was used to make this quilt. Two fat quarters produce the equivalent of two 15" blocks (or 7.5" quarter sections). Twelve fat quarters (6 light, 6 dark) were used on this quilt. I added a border to make it twin bed size. Measures 56" x 71"
