Walked into the rear balcony in the afternoon to see ths juvenile Black Kite perched on the parapet. Gingerly stepped back to get the camera hoping the bird would not take off. Got lucky, it didn't. You cannot get any closer to a healthy wild bird. It stood barely 8 feet from me yet refused to fly off giving me a chance to get a number of shots before mama appeared and called out to it. Since the 300mm prime was on I had to actually step back to get it full. This is obviously an uncropped shot. It remained in the same place long enough for me to go downstairs and get frontal shots of it.

With another Scottish expedition looming, I thought I should upload another photo from the trip last month. Dawn was just breaking when I got this shot of a Black Grouse.

Got the new year off to a great start by shooting in a friends studio with Karley. She has a great spirit and is so nice to work with. We shoot on white seamless and for this one look I wanted to change things up and go grey by killing the background speedlights. It didn't work out as well as I'd like since we didn't have any v-flats and I was unable to control spill well enough, so I had to tweak it in post.

I wish I could make his eyes white/glow. And maybe I should give him a staff or something else to hold.

Hopefully, these shorebirds will be returning to the area soon, because I'm ready for warmer weather! (view large)

I was super jazzed to find this awesome spider yesterday! This is a black purseweb spider, a species that spends most of its time underground. In fact, the females almost exclusively live underground, and it took over 100 years for scientists to find and describe a female of this species after a male was found in the early 1800s.
