Summer is over and my Girls changed her Clothes ^-^ Today a Portrait Pic from my beloved Yukiko-chan.
Black Digger Wasp - Sphex cognatus FAMILY SPHECIDAE (also known as thread-waisted wasps due to their very slim waistline :D) (Pretty sure about id but please let me know if this is incorrect)
Oh how I adore this wasp! I know with each new wasp I photograph I fall in love with each and every one of them but this one was extra special, such a stunner in person, especially when at rest.
I've seen them when they are moving about on the ground where they hunt and don't look anywhere near as cute or elegant.lol They move so quickly its a little alarming.
This little darling was sleeping when I found it so I was lucky to get this series. It was a nice and cold morning and very windy (possibly making it easier) this one did end up crawling on my hand for a little added warmth and became very active making it impossible for any further shots.
These particular wasps have a fairly smooth surface on their eyes but prior to uploading this top shot to flickr there was some nice detail visible on the eye surface, it seems to be not as noticeable now so I'm guessing the resolution has been reduced due to flickrs resizing.
Both shots taken with mpe-65mm macro lens. Top one @ 3xmagnification and 2nd at 1:1 so its a fairly large and long wasp. Both hand-held and with diffused Twin Flash.
One of three birds present at Slimbridge WWT
This one was the most obliging while I was there today and very difficult to get a photo of them all together.
The only drawback with having a relation with a caravan at Brean, is you have to spend an hour or so with the Black Redstart.
Drawbacks like that I can gladly live with.
A Black Kite is approaching me it's prey.
This is no crop!

This guy was taken in the City Park in Marysville, KS, which is locally famous for their black squirrel population. I live just 35 miles North of here and I have never seen a black squirrel near home. These were taken with my Nikon D80 and Tamron 200-500mm @ 500mm hand-held (leaning against a tree) in 30-40 mph winds.
Black Bottom Creek called by some of the old timers, also known as Readscreek by others.

The lower bill of this remarkable bird is longer than the upper, allowing the skimmer to drag the lower bill thru the water to catch small fish. Crystal River, Florida
