Eines Tages schipperte ich mit meiner Black Devil die Donau entlang und stieß auf ein prachtvolles Fleckchen Erde. Hier im Donaudurchbruchstal sollte sie erbaut werden, meine Herberge.
The official name of this species is White-bridled Finch (Melanodera melanodera) but all the field guides seem to call it Black-throated Finch, and its scientific name means black-necked so I have stuck with this name. It is found in the far south of South America (Chile and Argentina) with a different subspecies on the Falkland Islands, which is where I photographed this male. He was perched on some Tussock Grass eating the seeds. Now for the confusing bit. It looks like a finch, and acts like a finch, but it was traditionally placed in the bunting family (Emberizidae) and was originally given the name Emberiza melanodera. But recent molecular analysis reveals it is actually a Tanager (Thraupidae), a largely neotropical family. But to add to the confusion, not all Tanagers are Tanagers. For example the two Tanagers that have reached Britain as vagrants from America; Scarlet and Summer Tanagers ( www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/16142054193/in/photolist ), are in the Cardinal family (Cardinalidae). And some birds that were thought to be Tanagers, like Euphonias ( www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/16681259695/in/photolist ) have been placed in the finch family following DNA analysis.
I like how the skirt of this dress looks with overlapping layers. It looks great for holding it out.

I had an awesome day birding with Mel on August 30th. Around the Merritt area and Manning Park we had 44 grouse! 18 Sooty, 12 Ruffed, 10 Dusky and 4 Spruce! We also had lots of other birds like this Black-billed Magpie.
On a walk during our stay at Kell am See I saw this. I made this one B/W and added a lot of contrast;-)

Our beautiful one year old black kitty cat. She's a wonderful cat. Couldn't ask for a better pet for our kids. Looks best viewed in a dark room or at night. Perhaps it's too dark?? Anyone have a comment?
Update : September 24, 2007 This image won 1st place at our County Fair this past weekend. I'm very proud of my pretty girl for being so pretty. :) OH, so I guess it's not too dark then, huh? lol

Time to continue exploring the ever new. The beautiful scenery begins to blur as exhaustion begins to surface.
Skinningrove, Cleveland. One of Britains great winter of 2016 twitches, this bird which should be somewhere in Asia has been in this area for some 3 months, in exactly the same spot around the rocks behind the big jetty. Ridiculously confiding, just flits around while being admired.
Shot at a shooting range - repeater gun, set with 44 lead shot, black powder - and fired in a totally black environment. Lots of sparks, bangs and excitement.
I wanted to get a shot of these doing thier thing on the water. No luck, but got some in flight.
