This idea has been floating around in my head for awhile now... so without further ado, I present the ICONS series. A showcase of my favorite and some of the most influential fashion industry icons.

When the walls start to close in around us there are a few little spots around our hood where we can idle awhile out of doors.

Happy Bench Monday!

Its been awhile since I posted a cake,

This is an Almond torte, one of the cakes I made for the barbecue, it has a conical finish to it as I filled the top with Greek cream Patisserie and built it up, also the almond cake had its own dip in the middle thus creating more area for the cream in a flying disc shape,

Covered with thin layer of vanilla buttercream and finished with dark chocolate glaze, adding an interesting texture with those tinny chocolate crisps.

It's been quite awhile since I've done a sunburst, the Pup and I came across this scene yesterday mornin as we we're headed back to the Jeep to go home. Just kind of liked how it turned out. Hope you all had a great weekend and to my Canadian friends hope you all have a great Thanksgiving.

The Pup figured this made a good Thanksgiving shot and that if you hit "L" it even comes to life more

I did this one awhile ago...In going through my archives, I found it and thought I'd post it just for fun.

I made the little paper houses, and took them outside and put tea candles in each one. I wasn't surprised when one started burning, so took advantage of it. The rest of them stayed intact and are waiting for new occupants :)

Hello everyone! It has been awhile and I hope you are all well! Last night, I flew back to Chicago after a whopping 18 day trip through five cities, starting in Paris then Zürich, Milan, Florence, and flying out of Rome. As it was a very long vacation and I am Obsessive Compulsive, I have over 20,000 photos to look through. (This is actually an improvement for me when I used to take more like 2,000-3,000 photos a day on vacation.) In any case, this is one of the last photos I took in Rome. After a few days of 100 degree Fahrenheit/37 degrees Celsius, there were a lot of people lined up for gelato and these two friends were laughing and having their best life.

At my very best, I see the merciless beauty in all humans and our highest potential. That is when I like to take street photos.

7 Days With Flickr - Macro or Close-up (Wednesdays)

Been awhile since I've done a close-up. And although most beauty shots focus on the makeup. This particular look was inspired by gorgeous original jewellry created by Nino Heartsdale for Heartsdale Jewellry.

Ms Heartsdale's latest creations have all been inspired by some of the great artists; this one being Pablo Picasso. This set comes with necklace, bracelets and a set of earrings that include an inspired portrait styled by Picasso's surrealist look. This set will jazz up any outfit perfectly!

My life’s been filled with turned out lights,

Haunted by the hurt of closing doors

Let’s turn the locks and lose the keys,

I don’t want them open anymore, anymore

I've wanted to visit the Indian Peaks for quite awhile, and finally made the time this morning. I got up early, got to Brainard Lake before sunrise, and had a super surprise as the sun came up. The color was amazing. Shortly after this image was made, the rain hit hard and I decided to head up to the Long lake trailhead and start my hike up to Lake Isabelle.

While driving the mile up to the trailhead, I saw a rainbow that stretched from behind the lake to the left of the lake. It was clearly 3D, not like most rainbows seen in the distance. Unfortunately, I was no longer in a good location to capture that! I got part with my cell phone, but it really didn't convey the feeling this morning.

It rained on me a couple of times, was windy for awhile, but ultimately the sun came out as the clouds fled east.

I hoped to see a moose, but no luck. I saw a couple of black squirrels in the woods, then as I approached the treeline near Lake Isabelle, I saw a marmot and a pika.

Once in awhile I like to try bird photography. It was a really foggy day so I used a blue roof of a nearby building to get some color in the background.

Last evening I took a short walk into the park near my home. I often do that when it is warmer and the flowers are in bloom. This is a favorite bench of mine, it has been about 6 months since I or anyone else has taken a seat there, it won’t be long though the snow is gone and the warmer weather is setting in

"You've been stuck here for awhile now."

"I know." she said simply.

"Still planning to stay a long while?"

"Yes..." She trailed, sounding uncertain.

"In this small island? All alone? for days and days...???"

"Looks like it..." she said, sounding more confident.

"But, why?"

"Why not?"

"Because... you are all alone here..."

"I'm not alone. I have a lot of friends here."

"Uhm, seriously? I don't see anyone else."

"Look closely..." she encouraged.

"I still don't see anything!"

"My books, the flowers, the trees, the old baggage, the waves and the wind..." she sighed. "My poetry, my stories, my art and..." she paused.

"And??"

"My imagination." she winked.

"But what about an actual person? A friend? A lover? Your family?"

"Have you ever felt like an unwanted baggage?" she asked.

"No?"

"One day you saw a baggage. It was strong, pretty, a bit worn and torn but still beautiful. You decided to take it along in your journey. But as days pass by, you realize it is just getting heavier and heavier to the point you begin to regret taking it with you. Then one day, you realize you forgot to lift it during one of your stop overs and now it is lost forever..." she waved a hand to herself, "This is me, the lost and unwanted baggage."

"How can that be? You are the kindest and sweetest baggage someone could carry around."

"That's just not enough." she shrugged.

"Sad..."

"Unimaginable sadness." she agreed...

I can never get butterflies to hold still for me and I chased this one through rows and rows of lavender..back and forth, with me climbing across the rows and hoping not to attract the attention of all the honey bees buzzing about...

no texture this time ;-)

The self-sowing perennials in my flower garden seem to have spread exponentially. The Black-Eyed Susans, also known as Rudbeckia, are a favorite of the many bees I find zipping here and there. It seems I keep finding more and more reasons to linger in the garden.

It's been awhile since I have posted, but that's because my son and I were enjoying a few weeks in beautiful Iceland. This was our first stop near Hvolsvöllur and the views (see below) were fantastic from our chalet. I'll warn you all now......I'll be posting Iceland pics until next spring!! :D

As listed on Airbnb: Smáratún farm is located in the heart of South Iceland. A remote place in the beautiful setting of Fljótshlíð valley with priceless views of Eyjafjallajökull volcano.

Every once in awhile you witness a scene that just blows your mind. This was one of them. Fisgard Lighthouse taken from Esquimalt Lagoon on a particularly vivid cloudy day. One of several shots from this day, revisited with a LR tweak. A 2012 favourite.

Taken awhile back. This little bugger was in the neighbours roof area. Staring directly at me as though knowing there was little I could do to prevent his havoc.

Its been awhile since I played around with still life, so thought what better time than Halloween to put something together. This is what I came up with.

A happy and safe Halloween to all my Flickr friends! Best witches!

For awhile this summer a friendship was kindling between me and a little bird (dark eyed junco?). We have a flower box just in front of the kitchen window and when I was watering one day, this little one jumped out. It stayed nearby clicking at me, so I went inside and got some birdseed and laid it on the ledge of the flower box. In an hour it was gone. So I began going out around 3 times a day with some more birdseed and each day the little bird got closer and closer. At times it even watched me doing the dishes from the outside. I was pretty sure it would alight in my hand soon but one day I came out and a big blue jay was perched just above on the gutter and the little bird was no longer staying in the flower box.

Could be awhile, folks. Sheep have right of way. Even today!

Somewhere on the old Rio Grande Southern narrow-gauge system. According to the old photo caption, this was Railcar #1. I'm dubious; see the nice WIki writeup that follows. My guess this is one of the later Pierce-Arrow derivations. There were a total of 7 of these, built in the railroad's Ridgway shops to hold onto the vital Post Office contract to serve the Colo. mountain towns. They did their job admirably. Remarkably, all 7 survive, in one form or another. All still run! Must be a trick, finding parts for a 1930s Pierce-Arrow . . .

[Answered my own question by reading the Wiki article more closely. By the time the Geese were retired or turned to part-time tourist duty, there was very little left of the 1930s-era originals. Some very ingenious practical engineers there in the old RGS Ridgway shops!]

Original photo: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:A_ride_on_the_Galloping_G... My cleanup, crop & restoration. PD per wiki.

See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galloping_Goose_(railcar) for the story, which is cool.

My first posting for awhile into the Sliders Sunday group so perhaps a brief explanation as to why it qualifies. Along the left side there was a building intruding which has now been removed. The sky is an addition, the original was flat grey. The perspective of the building itself has been messed with, giving it more of a funnel shape with the top looking like it's wider than the bottom (it wasn't). As well the usual sliders in the LR basics panel have been utilised to make the image pop a little more than what it looks like in real life.

I've been away from Flickr for awhile working on my new blog about photography and associated random thoughts. It's up now so if you have a chance take a look. Mike Schaffner Photography

Now as to this photo is an abstract study in contrasts in line, shape, form and tonality. Taken along the waterway in The Woodlands, Texas.

As always, your faves and comments are appreciated. Constructive criticism and suggestions are especially welcome as I believe they help to make me a better photographer. Thank you for taking the time to look at my photos.

From that really May gray early morning awhile back. These two Caspian Terns were paired off, the male circling the female. I watched them interact for quite awhile. Moments later, they seemed to discuss their plans for the day before they eventually flew off together. What a joy. They're actually on a sand bar in the Santa Ana River where it empties into the Pacific, thus the strip of rocky lining at the top of the soft background.

Quoting my Sibley guide, the Caspian Tern is "our largest tern, about the size of Ring-billed Gull." It's a big bird, weighs over a pound, 21 inches long with a wingspan of 50 inches.

Sorry for being away for awhile, but I'm back with yet another image of the tea terraces of Munnar. They fascinated me and I hope they have intrigued you too. Their designs show up in mosaics and in somewhat bewildering lines. Not losing sight, however, of the incredibly hard work that's on display, they are fun to see. I don't remember taking this image as we were moving so I think it is an illusion!

This is a portrait of one of our beautiful equine friends we've been visiting for years. I don't know if they have names, I don't know anything about them. I just know I love them - especially this beauty, who's getting old now. Look at the streaks of white in his hair.... he's still beautiful to me. Yesterday, I told him I love him. I hope he understood. If I could, I'd have him for myself !

I won't put the location on the map, as not everyone is kind to animals.

Autumn Sunset it has been cloudy and rained for most of the month, this sunset was one of a kind in awhile, shot in North Carolina.

A few times a year this great blue heron visits the creek in Kent Gardens Park to find small fish.

The creek scene is shown in comment one below.
