AUTOMATIC HOTPOINT RANGE

Porcelain enamel and chrome

1924

Edison Electric Appliance Co., Inc., New York, Chicago, and Ontario, California.

This six-burner electric stove's nearly pristine white porcelain enamel finish is embellished with chrome details, and the six burners and their black Bakelite control knobs are all the original. The stove has two ovens on the right side, each with its own dial control. Above the ovens is a bread warmer with a roll-up door, with a glass knob matching the one on the pull-out crumb tray below the burners. The in-and-out curves of the four cabriole legs form a study-yet-airy support for the heavy top half of the stove.

The donor purchased the stove from the Red Cross in Portland, Maine, in the early 1980s. The Red Cross last used it for disaster relief in late October 1947, when out-of-control forest fires in southern and coastal Maine burned over 200,000 acres, leveling nine communities and destroying over 1,000 houses.

In this machine, Leonardo utilized hot air as a source of energy. The rising air moved a propeller that, in turn, engaged a pole with a pulley at the end that turned the spit. Movement was generated automatically and the turning speed of the spit was determined by the size of the fire.

Seen at the "Machines of Leonardo da Vinci" exhibit in Florence, Italy. The exhibit housed over 40 models of mechanical, building, flying and war machines. They were replicated exactly from his codices by florentine artisans under engineer supervision.

Unboxing the brown leather white face Tissot PRC200 Automatic Chronograph.

One of the coolest looking dials I've ever seen. Was dropped sometime in the past and the case is virtually a right-off. I'm holding onto this in the hopes of finding a case in good shape. If you've got one, I'd love to hear from you.

The relays and other components in this cabinet control still more relays that operate the traction motors of the elevator as it answers call signals and floor designations when a person presses a button outside or inside the cab. In modern elevators, computers control the operation.

The automatic writing project started out as an activity among friends and locals. I would write a line someone else would write a line and so on... Then people would overhear us and ask if they could participate and write something too (which surprised me) of course I said "yes!" At that point I realized that lots of people have something to say. I started asking strangers to add entries, then I graduated to offering people $1.00 to participate, some people do not accept the dollar and some pay me a $1.00 (paying it forward). It's becoming quite a lovely, surprising and compelling project. People from many walks of life are participating: homeless, a news reporter, academics, students, doctors, drug addicts, lawyers, tourists etc... People have written things in my journal that they'd never say out loud, not to anyone. Some of it's so sad, some intriguing, hilarious and so on... At the end of the day, every one of these people understand that their entries are being uploaded to the internet and are comforted in knowing that they will be heard. I have no idea where this is going, but it's going just fine! FYI: English is not everyone's first language here. I will be illustrating the book/journal after the text is done. I hope that everyone who reads these entries learns something about people, mostly that we never know what someone else is going through.

Shot on long-expired 100ASA Fujicolor, meter set to 64ASA. I thought that this little Konica might have had an erratic shutter, but it seems to be working okay. The exposures were consistant throughout the roll, including the 14 pictures that I took of the back of the lens cap.

he's the latest super hero with powers so profound

he can leap a dotted line in just a single bound

I know you must have seen him in books and magazines

he's the quintessential, mindless, modern epicene

his life is meaningful because he get things done

(bang bang) he's dead

chalk up another triumph for our hero

the automatic man

it's true you must have met him

he's your best friend and your foe

his opinions are determined by the status quo

a true creature of habit

he smokes three packs a day

when he has an original thought

he forgets it right away

he's a paradigm of carefree living

he's our mentor disturb him if you can

he's the answer if your peace of mind is lacking

he's our savior

he is the common man

so if you are troubled by the daily bump and grind

then take a careful look around

and brother you will find...

I learned a lot this afternoon from simply asking library staff if I could take some photos in the library. First of all, that no one whom I initially asked knew the answer to my question suggests that not many people take photos in the library, for whatever reason, for which reason the staff did not know whether or not I could take photos. Second, that the more I asked around, the more my question crept quietly up the chain of command, until at length the director of the library was asked, when she walked onto the premises after lunch, suggests that there is a centralized command in the library; in that regard, this institution is not organized in a similar manner to the way by which HKU is organized. Finally, that nobody knew the answer but rather than assume authority deferred to the director's discretion suggests that there are very few change agents, if any at all, in this institution. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, however, because this organization likely doesn't have to deal with major change at the moment: the best course of action is plodding straight ahead.

Likewise, no one whom I asked knew about the library's renovation cost and the cost of being a donor; but these staff members did point me to someone else who could possibly answer my question!

The lights were off in the men's washroom. It seems as if the washroom isn't used much. Inside the washroom, I noticed the automated sinks, urinals and paper towel dispenser -- that reminded me much of Hong Kong and South Korea; automation has arrived in America! In addition, I enjoyed the hot water flowing from the sinks. That was a pleasant surprise.

What impresses me the most about this library is the seating variety. There are not only many different types of seating furniture, but also many different environments in which these seats are placed: by windows; inside rooms; in seating areas; in corners. In addition, just as there were many different types of furniture looks, so there were, in fact, more broadly, many different, conspicuous areas in the library. They were clearly labeled to boot. In this way, this library shares its best feature with the City University of Hong Kong library: such a variety of learning spaces that surely one would find at least one type conducive toward studying. In this instance, I liked to study at the rectangular table in the cafe area. Many libraries, including the HKU library, could certainly improve its learning space by following the diversity model adopted by both the CityU library and the Livingston library.

What also makes this library conducive toward studying is its underuse. One could find a seat anywhere in the library: no squatting, thankfully. The shelves also seem underutilized. While on an individual basis, this surplus in seating is a boon, this surplus is lamentable for the community since it obviously isn't taking full advantage of this invaluable learning space!

I gushed about the effectiveness of the library's learning space to the staff. Perhaps they were amused that such a mundane environment to them could be so special to me.

My willingness and desire to live in a society with less throwaway and more reusability, was today substantialized by my purchase of a second hand Husqvarna Automatic 21A. A sewing-machine from the 70:s, totally imbued with genuine quality and durability. No plastic gear here! No limitation of useful life! Plainly a machine that is built to function. The way all machines should be built, long before the streamlining and downsizing of companies. When customers were willing to pay the actual cost of a great product.

Mit diesem Hebel transportiert man nicht nur den Film um eine Bildlänge weiter, sondern schaltet auch das Bildzählwerk auf die nächste Nummer und spannt den Verschluss.

Before I soldered up the battery well, I wanted to make sure my splicing didn't fail during reassembly. I stuck the bare end of the splice into the bottom of the well, placed a 357 battery in it, pushed down to make contact, and the meter jumped to life. This test should have been done at the start of all this too, to make sure that there weren't any other hidden problems.
