Taken for the Assignment 52 challenge- "Using lines for composition"
Once I started looking for lines, I couldn't stop! I posted several to my stream. This photo of these headstones and the double line of pines were my favorites (but it was a hard decision!)
I tried this in both color and B/W and while I'm a big fan of color, I liked the way the b/w eliminated the distracting colors and accentuated the lines.
Had to put a couple more in the comments. :-)
Active Assignment Weekly: July 30 – Aug. 6: Tree or trees
I took this photograph in the park. The idea came when I was standing there and saw a group of boys all in red running on the spot where the man in this picture appears. However, they were too fast, so I couldn't get ready to take the pic. I waited, and waited and waited for them to come again (I imagined they were running around the park) and they never came back. When I got home, I realised that this old man looked wonderful too. I loved the tree and all the different marks it has on the trunk, so I wanted to show it in my picture too.

These are the stairs to my apartment. They are very long and narrow and are responsible for keeping me in shape. I just wish I could get up them faster.

Another assignment for my studio lighting class
XL1600 in beauty dish w/diffuser above camera
XL1600 camera left in medium octobox for fill
XL1600 in 7" reflector on the background.
Underexposed by 2/3 to give that dirty gray background.
My husband's bromeliad, alcantarea imperialis. I like it when the sun shines through the leaves like this. There is something on the edge of one if the leaves - maybe a raindrop?
For this assignment, I experimented with different lighting angles and positions to see how they affect shadows and contrast. The first three photographs show how changing the direction of light can affect a person's facial features and mood. The final photograph uses light from an open doorway to create a silhouette, emphasizing the contrast between light and darkness.
Assignment 52: Creating depth
"Select a scene that has one subject approximately 6 feet away from you, a second subject approximately 20 feet from you, and a third subject about 40 feet or more (even very far away) from you. Select an aperture that will result in all three subject being in sharp focus."
I'm still not sure about this one, as it seemed the fence might stop the eye. Maybe it's the quality of the light shining on the house that keeps that from happening. My neighborhood seemed overly cluttered for this compositional challenge. I kept trying, & I almost used this one:

This assignment turned out to be a difficult but very interesting challenge. Seems a straightforward exercise in composition, which it would be in drawing or painting. But finding these subjects in natural settings, at the approximate prescribed distances, in a pleasing spatial relationship fitting into camera frame, & without too much intervening clutter, turned out to be difficult. An additional unforeseen dilemma once one does manage to lead the eye into the scene, is it an interesting enough place for the eye to want to go?
Assignment #6 "CD" Setup
Canon 550EX flash with 8" snoot and red gel @ 1/128th power. Sunpak 120J in collapsed translucent umbrella @ 1/16th power. Two Bic lighters for shoot on aluminum table. The plastic storage bin held my laptop so I could use the Canon EOS Capture software to take my photo. Fender Stratocaster electric guitar on camera right.
This is for Assignment 1 of the Visual Thinking School. Its a log with a flame - what do you want from me? It's only my third drawing!
Assignment - 1
1. Avoid center placement of subject
2. Point of interest
3. Avoid symmetry
4. Leading lines
5. 1/3 rule
6. Diagonal lines
7. Make and break patterns
This is the first one I took for this assignment. I had a low ISO for this photo, so it turned out fairly clear.
Today I took the camera into Sleaford and visited the National Centre for Craft & Design, formerly known as The Hub.
There are several other shots of the building in my Assignment 2 set. www.flickr.com/photos/belincs/6234868494/in/set-721576278...
