Here is the lantern photo that the text book team decided to use. It was really fun to have an assignment and find different ways to illustrate their theme,

I don't think this is exactly what my instructor wanted when he gave us our assignment for this week. I love it!
Photo taken through a dirty window looking into the bathhouse at Coe Hall. The purpose of the interiors assignment is to learn how to adjust the camera for the various types of light encountered indoors. Used the polarized filter here.
I don't think I'm ever going to make page 1 of Explore...... sigh......
Dark, mysterious....... I'll take many more photos for this assignment!
I love stairways. Especially the winding, marble stairway at the New York Public Llibrary.

Styling assignment: Camera: Canon 1DX Mark II. Lens: Canon 24-70mm, f/4.5, SS: 1/50, ISO 200. Light source: Canon 600EXII-RT Speedlight w/Impact 24" x 24" Quickbox with grid. Note: Child was not sitting on a shelf. He was laying with his back on the floor. Image was shot from above.
While Union Pacific's YSC25R switch job works the bottom end of North Yard, a group of SD40Ns await assignment in Salt Lake City, Utah on Oct. 6, 2018.
Every piece of assignment is unique and full of brilliant ideas. All my ideas translated into thousand of words that explain everything you need to know about the particular topic.
Here i used blue torchlight to focus on the outer ring and took the photo.

Assignment 52 -- "Fine Art" -- what might you hang on your wall?
This assignment inspired me to experiment with HDR, to attempt an "old masters'" sort of glow to a still life. Amazingly fun & addictive!
(Shot in natural light, late afternoon sun.)
The assignment was to use Photoshop's Vanishing Point filter to wrap a banner or sign around a building. I decided to use a picture of the girls. I could have put more time into this. But, I had to get it done in a hurry. Using the filter was easy. The only work involved was making sure the light pole was in front of the banner. I should have darkened the right side of the banner a little as the light source is hitting the building on the other side. But, once again, I put this together quickly. I also should have created a crease going along the corner of the building. I'll probably fix these issues and replace this image at some point soon.
Active Assignment Weekly: April 15-22, 2024, Simplicity. To me, simplicity means no distractions. I decided to use two of the many different techniques available to achieve this - fill the frame ("After the Rain") and negative space ("Beach Time"). Both photos were taken at Point Pelee National Park, Ontario. You'll be seeing a lot of pictures from this park, as I am here for two months (it is a bird migration hotspot).
They all fit nicely into this ONA Brixton. Question is... Do I need all of them on assignment?
Since getting rid of all my Canon gear last summer, I am very happy with the image quality of the Fuji X-System and its' form factor. Much more portable!
Got an assignment recently from a branding & marketing company to make a Chinese New Year gallery. I happened to be in Haikou over new year, so I shot them in Haikou, on a tropical winter's night which though pleasantly mild, turned rather wet and rainy. More info at my blog graemenicolphotography.com/blog/?p=227, and full gallery on my website www.graemenicolphotography.com/index.php?/assignments/phi...

Self portrait, shot for Active Assignment Weekly, theme "Rim Light".
WIT
Behind my head, on a tripod, a flash with remote trigger on 1/4 power. On the flash a snoot in order to bundle the light output. The camera was positioned opposite the flash, with my head in between to catch that light.
In post converted to BW and a bit exposure correction and contrast enhancement.
Assignment 52 -- Copycat
A terrifically exciting, thought-provoking assignment! And the first challenge, of course, is to isolate & define what is characteristic of a given photographer's style. Even more daunting for me, the realization made particularly acute that I very much lack the technique, skills & knowledge to do more than make the merest stab at imitating photographers I admire. Nonetheless, there is much to be learned in the effort, so here is my attempt at going in a different direction in imitating Llewellyn, who caught the attention of so many of us:

Never mind the futility of getting his kind of pin point focus -- it was a huge struggle for me to get whiteness without shadow! Even after setting up lights & fooling with them endlessly, & I am not at all a techie sort of person! But I'm glad I tried!
but danielle has been on of my closest friends since we were in the third grade. this makes me want to take intimate portraits of all of my close friends and family. i want to keep a piece of them with me forever. i want to shoot them the way that i see them.
Taken for Assignment 52 assignment #4..Only had the use of white paper for backdrop, window light and a mirror for fill light.

I'll beat everyone to this critique: I wish that I got his whole hand.
What I learned from doing these photos is to give myself some extra room when shooting. I was trying to stay zoomed in and keep the action tight. Because they move so quickly up this board and they can swing erratically; it was hard to keep the feet and arms always in the frame while zoomed in so tight. I’m balancing on the top of this board so it is difficult for me to move around. In retrospect I should have not worried about zooming in so tight because you can always crop the unwanted areas out...it is much tougher to recreate a hand.
I'm not sure if I should crop tighter on the right and top?
What about the color of the light in comparison to the other campus board photo.
Which one is better?
Feedback please!
Studio 26 -- Assignment on Imitation & Flattery.
Though I actually have an artistic preference for the closer crop of this image, this choice is all about celebrating my party girl, so of course must include the entirety of her happy expression. And "party girl" was one of my nicknames for her, even when she was a puppy. And what better way to celebrate this milestone birthday than with meringues? Special sugarless, apple, beet & almond flavored!
(And thinking of her two fine brothers, Borgie & Ticket, who remain always close in memory.)
The various & wonderful inspiration shots linked below.
And a link to a gallery, as I thought would be fun to gather subsequent shots & various variants together in one place -- I hope it's complete:
