Here's another view of Chicago’s skyline, this time from atop the Willis (formerly Sears) Tower. While I had hoped for clear conditions, I felt the approaching storms yielded a cool and ominous look to the image. Shot handheld and through less-than-clean glass, this isn’t as clear as I’d like, but still a sight to behold if you ever have the chance!

2335 approaches Blackwater working the twice weekly container service to Rockhampton from Longreach as 6391.
Once a month, this service extends onto Winton, as well as regularly stopping off at Barcaldine and Alpha to drop loading. This train operates loaded from Rockhampton to deliver supplies to various towns.

CN 2801 leads Q120, as they approach the New Brunswick/Nova Scotia border. Lighting is good for this shot, but I kinda wish it was an hour or so earlier. Oh well.

A Lehigh Railway turn from Sayre, PA approaches the town of Ulster. The tracks briefly veer away from the Susquehanna River as they near the town. A farmer's field provides a break from the seemingly endless row of trees that obscures the right of way, particularly along the river. This railroad does run through some very scenic territory.

On a foggy evening, a late night northbound Bessemer & Lake Erie train has been routed through Kremis interlocking under a starry sky. In a few hours, they would arrive here with a string of empty hopper cars from the mills of Pittsburgh and continue north to the port of Conneaut, OH to be re-loaded with another train load of iron ore to bring south.

Pulha ri ཕུལ་ ཧ་རི་ 6320m
Pulha Ri is a prominent, lonely and beautiful peak in central Tibet. It's located close to the Friendship Highway (FH), the road which connects the Nepali capital Kathmandu and Lhasa in central Tibet. The distance from the FH isn't more than 15km the way the crow flies and on a clear day you'll have excellent views of the peak's eastern flanks. You would think the peak has been climbed numerous times because of the short approach, but in early 2008 it was still listed as unclimbed. The distance to the peak is deceptive though. Approaching from Gyatso La, one of Tibet's highest paved road passes, you have to walk in deep gorges which hosts wild rivers. I went for the peak in late winter/early spring and had to deal with numerous frozen waterfalls. In the warmer seasons my guess is that this approach is impossible due to the rivers.
Qomolongma from summit The views from the summit of Pulha Ri is extraordinary. What about the fact that you can see six of the world's 8000m peaks! In the far east the Kangchenjunga's massive bulk can be seen in the distance. Dead south Makalu's black pyramid. Lhotse the fourth highest looks like a dwarf with Qongmolongma as its closest neighbor. Further west Cho Oyu and far off in the distance Xixabangma. In addition to these giants, Pumori, Phola Gangzhen, Gang Benchhen and other 7000m peaks are clearly visible in the central Himalayan range. Lonely peaks in the 6000 category includes; Tanggla Ri, Kyakyaru Ri and Hlako/Lhakoi Kangri - all unclimbed. The peak is officially 6404m, but I had 6424m on the summit. It's also sometimes called Maphu Kangri and it's prominence is 1198m.
Technically speaking, Pulha Ri isn't a hard peak, but the route finding can be tricky. To gain access to the main east ridge is a matter of taking long detours under rock bastions of really rotten rock or climb vertically on rock or ice. The peak is full with well hidden crevasses and believe it or not but all the eastern side was full of penitentes up to a meter high. This is normally a very typical South American phenomena which sometimes also occurs at certain conditions in North America. Having passed Tunstead works 66783 is about to plunge through the short tunnel just before coming out on the old triangle at Blackwell Mill / Torpey Pike. The train will curve right down to Buxton where it will run around before heading up to Hindlow / Dowlow, whereas the old Midland Mainline from Derby / Maltlock to Manchester would come in from the right through the gate.

The road from Egilsstadir to Myvatn passes a area formed by ash-sprewing volcanoes. The precipitation is quite low in this area, but the efficient draining of the ash makes the area appear as a bone dry desert with almost no vegetation.
The mountains in the background are all volcanoes.

Stanier Black 5 no. 44871 comes away from Irwell Vale and approaches Lumb Woods with the 10.30 Rawtenstall to Heywood service on.the 6th March 2020, the first day of the ELR's Spring Steam Gala.

66023 on the approach to Swindon passing South Marston with 6C03 0955 Northolt Sidings to Severnside Sita binliner waste train. At least at this location the seemingly very over engineered catenary is not too much of an issue!
I love the locations we found for this beautiful couple, among stunning trees away from the sun.

A 'bunkering vessel', Heiko, approaching Customs House pier, with the east end of Tilbury landing stage behind it, plus some of Tilbury Docks behind that...
Heiko was built in Germany in 1962 and is based up river, but operates pretty much its full length. It's variously described as a bunkering tanker, bunker barge and motorized fuel tanker, which I'll settle for. It was previously Heiko Wegener and Fram (?): Heiko apparently is a shortened version of Heinrich...I shan't complain about that, either, as both of my forenames are German(ic).
I used to be able to get to Tilbury landing stage in 4-5 minutes on the ferry. I can still get there (or to the shore, as I was told public access is now barred) by bus, 4 of...Gravesend to Greenhithe, Greenhithe to Riverside Shopping Centre, Riverside Shopping Centre to Tilbury Civic Square, Tilbury Civic Square to Tilbury Ferry Terminal - 2 hours 45 minutes assuming buses run on time. If I'm in a hurry I can travel into London by train and thence to Tilbury in only 1 hour and 27 minutes. British trains are probably the least reliable in the known world. Progress, eh ?
