Turnagain Arm iceflow late December

We were up near Victoria, BC for a gardening conference this weekend. I skipped out Saturday afternoon and went for a hike in Gowlland Tod Provincial Park up to Holmes Peak and Jocelyn Hill via the Ridgetop Trail. One challenge was more than 20 cm of snow, which is quite unusual in the Victoria area. It was a fun hike, I saw lots of my favorite trees Arbutus menziesii. I made it up to near the top of Jocelyn Hill when the weather turned sour and I decided it was time to head back to Sidney for some scones and book shopping.

Thanks to Flickr member Calypso Orchid for giving me some great Saanich Peninsula hiking tips, I have to come try a springtime hike up here.

View from the ship "Stena Danica" approaching the port of Frederikshavn. It is midsummer week and the time is approx 22.00 at night.

Rainstorm approaching Tintagel, Cornwall. It arrived surprisingly quickly and we were soon drenched.

The famous Ferry across the Mersey, approaching Liverpool, The Pool of Life as some people call it, I was on board The Royal Daffodil ferry. The Liverpool Ferries where given the name " Royal " by the King, in recognition for the service provided by them during the evacuation of troops from the Normandy Beaches. The vessel you can see tied up at the Landing Stage is the Isle of Man Ferry.

Shots around Berwick station prior to the replacement of the overhead as part of the High Capacity Trains project. At the time of these pictures works were yet to be completed at Berwick but had been done around Narre Warren

The station itself was located east side of the level crossing at Clyde Road in what was rural land on the southern side of the town centre for most of its history. A goods yard was located on the southern side of the station facing what was originally the only platform, later removed for car parking.

Electrification through here was originally completed as part of the Gippsland Line project - the only Victorian country main line to be electrified. It was officially opened to Warragul in July 1954 and Traralgon in March 1956 although test trains along this section to Narre Warren were running in 1952. The line was progressively duplicated soon after with most of this section completed in 1956, although a single track remained between Narre Warren and Berwick until early 1962. Following withdrawal of electric locomotives to Traralgon in 1987 and cessation of limited suburban trains to Warragul in 1998 (commenced 1987) the Dandenong-Pakenham section was the last part in use for suburban operations, with the wiring itself renewed in the late 1990s.
