Continuing my story from yesterday... The Mallard brood on the log was growing restless and one chick decided that it needed to climb up a bit higher and be closer to mom, who was still sleeping. This chick stood up and flapped it's little arms a bit, then settled down to keep watch.

Taken 8 June 2018 at Westchester Lagoon, Anchorage, Alaska.

This Australian Wood Duck family was feeding in the shallows but moved off a bit as I came along.

As usual Mr Woody put himself in harm's way to protect the family as Mrs Woody led the ducklings away from the bank.

Mrs Woody would also put herself on the line to protect the ducklings but if both are close it seems to me that the male always takes the most dangerous position..in this case between the family and the ravening photographer.

I love the males, all black and white and iridescence but the brown females, when seen close up, can show some lovely subtle shades and textures

I've seen these before but either without a camera or else extremely distant. Velvet Scoter are part of a species/subspecies group that may include the White-winged Scoter (the American version) and Stejneger's or Siberian Scoter. They are treated as three species by some and all lumped together by others. Both White-winged and Stejneger's have been recorded as extremely rare vagrants in the UK, often off the east coast of Scotland

This juvenile Trumpeter Swan was swimming with five siblings and its parents in the large pond behind my house. My wife saw them all in the water and urged me to go shoot them, so I quietly walked down to the pond all the while expecting them to make for the far shore. To my surprise they didn't, in fact, they came closer. Maybe it was the kayaker on the pond ;) They came so close I opted to try for a headshot of one of the young ones. They actually came withing 15 feet of me which really surprised me since I don't feed the birds, and while the parents kept their eye on me for a time, soon everyone was dabbling for food right in front of me. Wow! That's the closest I've ever been to these guys! What a fantastic experience!

The most appalling light conditions today to try out the new camera. It is certainly a lot quicker on the draw than the old one (550D) but there are still some settings I need to get right but I think, in time, we will get to know each other better. Post processing is better too, you can correct your images much better.

"Mosca" (a Fly) is a Muscovy Duck (Pato Mudo or mute duck - Cairina moschat), petted like a dog by everybody who passes by Rua da Madalena nowadays most likely known as "Rua do Pato" (Duck's Street) in Faro. He poses at his owner's (a shoemaker) door just like a "Club Bouncer".

Mallard hen (Anas platyrhynchos) feeding among the yellow pond-lily (Nuphar polysepala). Every year, the garden is visited by a few mallard who find our nutrient-rich pond a treat. Last year there were two drakes and a hen, this year just a pair. The mallards stick around for a few weeks, them leave for climes farther north. Photographed at Regional Park Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA

The Egyptian goose (Alopochen aegyptiaca) is a member of the duck, goose, and swan family Anatidae. It is native to Africa south of the Sahara and the Nile Valley.

Egyptian geese were considered sacred by the ancient Egyptians, and appeared in much of their artwork. They have been raised for food and extensively bred in parts of Africa since they were domesticated by the ancient Egyptians. Because of their popularity chiefly as ornamental bird, escapes are common and small feral populations have become established in Western Europe.

It swims well, and in flight looks heavy, more like a goose than a duck, hence the English name. It is 63–73 cm long.

The sexes of this species are identical in plumage, and the males average slightly larger. There is a fair amount of variation in plumage tone, with some birds greyer and others browner, but this is not sex- or age-related. A large part of the wings of mature birds is white, but in repose the white is hidden by the wing coverts. When it is aroused, either in alarm or aggression, the white begins to show. In flight or when the wings are fully spread in aggression the white is conspicuous.

The voices and vocalisations of the sexes differ, the male having a hoarse, subdued duck-like quack which seldom sounds unless it is aroused. The male Egyptian goose attracts its mate with an elaborate, noisy courtship display that includes honking, neck stretching and feather displays. The female has a far noisier raucous quack that frequently sounds in aggression and almost incessantly at the slightest disturbance when tending her young.
