Rockland Lake State Park

Rockland Co., NY

The kuruwhengi is quite ahrd to photograph. It is a shy duck, for the most aprt, avoids popular city ponds in favour of quieter waterways. It's a striking duck with a huge bill that seems almost too big for the head. The male is especially colourful.

Taken at otukaikino reserve, Christchurch, New Zealand.

Order: Anseriformes

Family: Anatidae

Shovelers are specialist filter-feeding waterfowl with a large spoon-shaped or shovel-shaped bill that is almost twice as broad at its tip than at its base and which is the bird’s most conspicuous feature. Fine lamellae extend along most of the edge of the upper mandible and it is by pushing water through this lamellae curtain that small plankton and fine seeds are extracted.

Kuruwhengi are sexually dimorphic. The males are highly coloured most of the year, when they have a blue-grey head and neck with a distinctive white crescentic band at the base of its large spatulate black bill. The breast is a mottled brown and white after breeding but becomes progressively pure white as the nuptial moult proceeds during May. Its chestnut flank is offset by a large white patch at the tail base. The eye is yellow and the legs bright orange. Females are uniformly mottled light brown with dull brown bill and eye, and brown-orange legs. In flight Australasian shovelers have a distinctive profile with a conspicuously large, indeed out of proportion, bill, sharp pointed wings and very rapid wingbeats. The blue, white and green patches on the upper wing contrast with the white underwing. Their flight, especially at takeoff, gives off a distinctive whirring soun. Shovelers are quiet ducks. Displaying or defensive drakes have a rapid, but low volume, train-like sound (chuff-chuff) call, and females sometimes quack. Kuruwhengi are widespread throughout the North and South Islands, rarely on Stewart Island, mainly on large freshwater wetlands (usually fairly coastal), but occasionally in sheltered estuaries. They also make seasonal use of dune lakes, temporary wetlands, drains and sewage ponds.

Shovelers perform spectacular communal courting and then pairs break off to find a secluded territory for nesting which occurs in October, which is later than for all other waterfowl. Males vigorously defend territory. Nests are usually situated in long grass near water. Clutches are of 5-13 (mean 10) white eggs and upon hatching the ducklings are raised solely by the female over about 8 weeks. Broods are rarely active or conspicuous during the day. Black Swan

Scientific name: Cygnus atratus

Family: Anatidae

Order: Anseriformes

Featured Bird Groups

Water birds

What does it look like?

Description

In adult Black Swans the body is mostly black, with the exception of the broad white wing tips which are visible in flight. The bill is a deep orange-red, paler at the tip, with a distinct narrow white band towards the end. Younger birds are much greyer in colour, and have black wing tips. Adult females are smaller than the males.

Where does it live?

Distribution

Black Swans are found throughout Australia with the exception of Cape York Peninsula, and are more common in the south. The Black Swan has been introduced into several countries, including New Zealand, where it is now common, and is a vagrant to New Guinea.

Habitat

Black Swans prefer larger salt, brackish or fresh waterways and permanent wetlands, requiring 40 m or more of clear water to take off. Outside the breeding season, Black Swans travel quite large distances. Birds fly at night and rest during the day with other swans.

What does it do?

Feeding

The Black Swan is a vegetarian. Food consists of algae and weeds, which the bird obtains by plunging its long neck into water up to 1 m deep. Occasionally birds will graze on land, but they are clumsy walkers.

Breeding

Black Swans form isolated pairs or small colonies in shallow wetlands. Birds pair for life, with both adults raising one brood per season. The eggs are laid in an untidy nest made of reeds and grasses. The nest is placed either on a small island or floated in deeper water. The chicks are covered in grey down, and are able to swim and feed themselves as soon as they hatch.

Geese belong to the order Anseriformes, which includes all sorts of waterfowl. Swans and geese are the largest waterfowl, characterized by long necks and non-iridescent coloration. Even though they are waterfowl, geese spend most of their time on land.

There are two major genera among the geese: Anser geese and Branta geese.

Anser geese usually have pink, orange or gray legs and bills. Their bills are serrated. Belonging to this group are the species Bar-Headed, Bean, Emperor, Greylag, Pink-Footed, Ross', Snow, Swan Goose and White-Fronted.

Branta geese always have black bills, which are softer than those of the anser geese and without serrations. Belonging to this group are the species Barnacle, Brant, Canada, Nene or Hawaiian and Red-Breasted.

A baby goose is called a gosling. A group geese is called a gaggle.

Mute Swan, Order Anseriformes, Family Anatidae, Species Cygnus olor,..

A large, familiar bird, strikingly white and obvious even at great range, Mute Swan is generally quite tame, even semi-domesticated in its behaviour and choice of habitat.

Territorial pairs are aggressive, even to people or their dogs, using impressive displays of arched wings and loud, hissing calls.

In some floodplains, small groups regularly feed on dry land, a habit that is more consistent with the two " wild swans ", Bewick's and Whooper,

Voice - Strangled trumpeting and hissing notes,

Nesting - Huge pile of vegetation at water's edge; up to 8 eggs; 1 brood; March - June.

Feeding - Plucks vegetable matter from short grass in fields and salt marshes, pulls the same from shallow water, or upends in deeper water,..

Length 1.4 - 1.6m,

Wingspan - 2,08 - 2.38m,

Weight - 10 - 12kg,

Lifespan - 15 - 20 years,

Social - Small flocks,

Status - Secure,..

I saw this duck in the east coast of Taiwan, between egrets, herons and moorhens. I don't saw anything similar in the bird guides of Taiwan. Only Dendrocygna javanica, that it's accidental in Taiwan, is slightly similar. When I approached enough, the duck taked flight and the wings showed a very tiny white border in the secondaries.

Please help me with ID

Long-tailed Duck, Clangula hyemalis, diver, medium size seaduck

Order: Anseriformes

Family: Anatidae

Status: Fairly common winter both coasts.

++++++++++++++++

Formerly known as Oldsquaw, the Long-tailed Duck breeds in the Arctic and winters along both coasts of North America. It is distinctive among ducks in plumage, molt sequences, foraging behavior, and vocalizations. www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Long-tailed_Duck/id

+++++++++

A duck of cold northern waters. Often the most abundant bird in the high Arctic. Large flocks are often far out at sea; many spend the winter on such northern waters as Bering Sea, Hudson Bay, and Great Lakes. Flocks fly low over sea, with stiff shallow wingbeats, often tilting from side to side. Far more vocal than most ducks, and loud melodious calls of flocks can be heard from some distance. It was formerly called "Oldsquaw," not politically correct by any measure, a reference to this "talkative" behavior -- although it is the male of this species that makes most of the noise.

Feeding Behavior

forages by diving and swimming underwater, with wings partly opened but propelled mainly by feet. Most feeding is within 30' of surface; supposedly able to dive more than 200', deeper than any other duck.

An seinem nördlichen A.usfluss, der A.are, liegt die namengebende S.tadt T.hun.

A.bflusskapazität der A.are nur beschränkt ist.

Cinnamon Teal at Luis Lopez, Socorro Co., NM, 170222. Anas cyanoptera. Anseriformes: Anatidae.

Common Goldeneye south of Pilar, Taos Co., NM, 150207. Bucephala clangula. Anseriformes: Anatidae.

Status: A rare winter visitor to wetlands from October to March, almost always associating with flocks of Tufted Duck.

Conservation Concern: Green-listed in Ireland. The European population is regarded as Secure.

Identification: Very similar to Tufted Duck and care is needed to distinguish the two species. Slightly smaller than Tufted Duck and lacks that species distinctive crest. Adult males can be separated from Tufted Duck by having much greyer flanks with a white vertical stripe, as well as different pattern on the bill (broad white stripe near the tip). Adult females appear quite different to female Tufted Duck, being much paler overall and having an obvious white eyering. Also shows a hint of the obvious vertical white stripe found on the flanks of the male. Juvenile Ring-necked Ducks are similar to females, though the head pattern is not as contrasting and lacks the broad white stripe on the bill.

Similar Species: Tufted Duck

Call: Generally silent when seen in Ireland.

Diet: Mainly feeds by diving for freshwater invertebrates (beetles, shrimp). Ring-necked Ducks will also feed on plants, such as pondweeds.

Breeding: Ring-necked Ducks breed in central and northern North America.

Wintering: The species winters south of the breeding grounds in the United States to Central America. Occasionally wanders to Ireland and then can be seen with Tufted Duck on larger lakes. In September/October 2008, a flock of 15 was recorded on Inishmore on the Aran Islands.

Where to See: Ring-necked Ducks could be seen in any large flock of Tufted Ducks in Ireland.

A pesar que es llamado "cisne" no lo es como tal, sino más bien sería un ganso. El único cisne nativo en Chile sería el cisne de cuello negro/In spite of its common name "Coscoroba swan" it's not a swan, instead its more related to geese. The only swan distribuited along the country is the black-necked swan.

Status - Secure,...

The Southern Screamer (Chauna torquata), also known as the Crested Screamer, belongs to the order Anseriformes. It is found in southeastern Peru, northern Bolivia, Paraguay, southern Brazil, Uruguay and northern Argentina.[2] Its diet consists of plants stems, seeds, leaves, and, rarely, small animals.

This photo was taken at the Phoenix Zoo on March 12, 2011.
