Breeding males are stunning with ornate, colorful patterns visible up close; appears dark overall at a distance. Females gray-brown with thin white eyering. Crest on head. Found in wetlands and flooded woods. Flies through trees with exceptional maneuverability, thanks to its long tail. Often shy and quick to flush. Call is a loud, screeching whistle. (eBird)

Usually Wood Ducks are a little more cautious than the mallards and geese, but we had sunflower seeds are were willing to share. I could not back away far enough to get the whole duck, because he insisted on following me. I guess worse things can happen on beautiful sunny spring morning :-)

I was delighted to see this little cutie as I walked along the Thames Tow Path. I thought I had missed my chance this year.

The colours on these lovely ducks are absolutley amazing.

Huge white bird with long neck, reddish-orange bill, and black face. Adults have a black knob on top of the bill. Immatures are dusky brown with a gray bill. Native to northern Europe and Asia, but introduced in many regions, where it is now common on ponds, lakes, and calm coastal waters. Very aggressive toward native waterfowl. Often seen in pairs or small family groups. (eBird)

This beautiful swan swam slowly while we were enjoying a bit of early morning birding. The soft light and the serene nature of the bird, for once without its head deep in the water, was a gentle start to the day.

I was completely taken aback when I saw this Egyptian Gosling while out on my lockdown 3 exercise walk. It's the first time I had taken my camera with me while in this lockdown. It is way too early and I can only hope it survives. According to another walker there are only 2 left of 9 born 5 days ago.

The eider is the UK's heaviest duck and its fastest flying. It is a true seaduck, rarely found away from coasts where its dependence on coastal molluscs for food has brought it into conflict with mussel farmers. Eiders are highly gregarious and usually stay close inshore, riding the swell in a sandy bay or strung out in long lines out beyond the breaking waves. It is an Amber List species because of its winter concentrations.

I certainly wasn't expecting to see this when taking my daily exercise.

Came across this nest quite by accident and found 2 new born cygnets and 2 eggs yet to hatch. I was on the bank far enough away not to disturb them. The cygnet still has its egg tooth.

First time I have managed to photograph one of these. The conditions weren't ideal but I'll take it.

Striking diving duck of coastal harbors, mountain lakes, and large rivers. Very similar to Common Goldeneye. Males are easiest: Barrow’s has more black on the back, a downward-pointing spur on the side, and a crescent-shaped (not circular) white patch on the face. Females can be very difficult. Barrow’s usually has a yellow bill, but Common can rarely show a dull yellowish bill. Head and bill shape are important: Barrow’s has a steeper forehead and a puffy nape, and a shorter bill with a more rounded lower edge. Fairly common in western U.S. and Canada; much less common in the northeast. Small population in Iceland. Frequently found in mixed flocks with Common Goldeneye. (eBird)

We went for an evening drive during my covid quarantine on a quest to hear Flammulated Owl. It was a remote area so no chance of running into people. No owl, but a host of other nice, if noisy (photographically speaking), birds.

More Greylags from yesterday

Medium-sized dark whistling-duck with cream-colored flank plumes. Unlike Plumed Whistling-Duck, these plumes do not stick out and appear painted on the flanks. Often in smaller flocks around lakes, ponds, and dams. As the name suggests, note whistling call. (eBird)

Australia has three species of Whistling-Duck. The Plumed (posted yesterday), the Wandering (shown here) and the Spotted (a vagrant from the Philippines). We found this presumed pair at a busy billabong filled with waterfowl and waders of all descriptions.
