Eclipse plumaged male. At the time of this photo, this rare bird, of unknown provenance, had been associating with other waterfowl in a pond at Waller Park, Santa Maria, Santa Barbara County, California, USA, since Nov 25. (I am not the discoverer of this rare vagrant to the Western Hemisphere.)

Aix galericulata
El pato mandarín (Aix galericulata) es una especie de ave anseriforme de vivos colores de la familia Anatidae oriunda de China, Japón y Siberia que ha sido introducida en diversos puntos de Europa y que es muy apreciada por su belleza, por lo que se la tiene en numerosos parques de todo el mundo
Descripción
Elegante y de constitución robusta, puede llegar a medir 45 cm de longitud, presentando un dimorfismo sexual muy acusado; solamente se parecen hembra y macho cuando éste está protegido por su plumaje de eclipse.
El macho es un ave inconfundible: presenta un copete rojo con brillos metálicos de color verde sobre la frente y dos franjas laterales de color blanco o crema muy claro, en las que destacan los ojos oscuros y el pico de un tono rojo coral. Asemejándose a unas barbas, posee unas plumas de un color naranja cobrizo. El pecho y la garganta son de color morado; el vientre es blanco, y los laterales son de un tono crema con dos bandas azuladas, que dan paso a sendas franjas anaranjadas curvadas hacia arriba.
La hembra es bastante parecida a la del pato joyuyo; posee un plumaje mucho más discreto: tonos pardos y ocres en sus partes superiores, un anillo y una banda blanca alrededor del ojo, y las partes inferiores más pálidas, con los flancos moteados.
Distribución y hábitat
Esta especie estuvo en su día muy extendida por toda Asia oriental, pero las exportaciones masivas (para parques y colecciones) y la destrucción de su hábitat han reducido sus poblaciones en el este de Rusia y de China por debajo de 1.000 parejas en cada una de las dos regiones; en Japón, sin embargo, se estima que existen unas 5.000 parejas. Estas poblaciones asiáticas son migradoras e invernan en las tierras bajas del este de China y del sur de Japón.
Su población mundial se estima entre 65.000 y 66.000 individuos.1
Es muy común que algunos especímenes se escapen de colecciones, y durante el siglo XX se han asilvestrado algunas poblaciones, la más importante en el Reino Unido, con unas 1.000 parejas.
El pato mandarín suele habitar zonas forestales densas cerca de lagos poco profundos, charcas o lagunas
Comportamiento
En invierno pueden formar pequeños grupos, pero raramente se asocian con otros patos.
Se alimentan tanto en tierra como en agua. Comen sobre todo plantas y semillas, especialmente de hayas. Suelen comer hacia el atardecer, permaneciendo en los árboles o en el suelo durante el día.
Anidan en agujeros de árboles cercanos al agua. Al poco tiempo de nacer los patitos, su madre vuela al suelo y les anima a saltar del nido.
Creencias
En Asia oriental los patos mandarines fueron considerados animales portadores de buena fortuna, y de amor y afecto conyugal; de tal forma que en China se regala una pareja de estos patos como regalo principal en las bodas más importantes.

She's beautiful, even if she is "just" an everyday female Mallard : ) I never get tired of photographing Mallards, or seeing photos of them taken by other photographers. This photo was taken at a wetland in SW Calgary on 7 July 2015, when I called in for just an hour after a doctor's appointment.
"If someone at a park is feeding bread to ducks, chances are there are Mallards in the fray. Perhaps the most familiar of all ducks, Mallards occur throughout North America and Eurasia in ponds and parks as well as wilder wetlands and estuaries. The male’s gleaming green head, gray flanks, and black tail-curl arguably make it the most easily identified duck. I took this photo at Lake Artemesia thinking this was a ring-necked duck but when I reviewed it after I got home I realized it was a Lesser Scaup drake. It was the first time I'd seen a scaup at Lake Artemesia but I suspect that's because it was among the ring-necked ducks and just fit right in.

This is the father of our group of seven young swans on the loch. Peaceful scenes like this are not long to last as he will start chasing his youngsters out fairly soon.

Teesta Barrage is a true haven for birdwatchers, with near-threatened species like the Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca) a common sight.
The ferruginous duck, also ferruginous pochard, common white-eye or white-eyed pochard is a medium-sized diving duck from Eurosiberia.
The scientific name is derived from Greek aithuia an unidentified seabird mentioned by authors including Hesychius and Aristotle, and nyrok, the Russian name for a duck.

Of all grey geese, the Grey lag ( the direct ancestor of the domestic goose ) most resembles the farmyard goose.
