Canada Goose ( Branta canadensis ). 24.5.2021, Keminmaa, Finland.

Canada goose here is a wild bird. I was visiting my friends when these two geese came really close us to wash and clean themselves. They were so close that I could at best take almost pure head shots.

Somehow they looked very curious and did not even mind my two dogs....

Greylag Goose,

Order - Anseriformes, Family - Anatidae, Species, - Anser anser,

Of all grey geese, the Grey lag ( the direct ancestor of the domestic goose ) most resembles the farmyard goose.

It is also the most easily seen grey goose in the UK because it has been introduced in many lowland areas where sizeable flocks are now semi-tame and resident all year round.

Winter visitors are still wild and shy.

In much of eastern and central Europe, the Greylag is naturally resident in extensive marshes,

Voice, - Loud, clattering, and honking notes like farmyard bird, ahng-ahng-ahng,kang-ank,

Nesting, - Sparsely lined ground nest, often on island; 4 - 6 eggs; 1 brood; May - June.

Feeding, - Grazes; plucks-grass and cereal shoots, digs for roots and waste grain,

Length, - 74 - 84 cm ( 29 - 33 in ),

Wingspan, - 1.49 - 1.68 m ( 5f - 5f 6in ),

Weight - 2.9 - 3.7kg,

Lifespan, - 15 - 20 years,

Social - Flocks,

Status, - Secure,.

Mating Hooded Mergansers (a.k.a. Lophodytes cucullatus) - Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands (a.k.a. Viera Wetlands), Melbourne, Florida

A male with a hood on his head drags off a fem by her hair, and then has his way with her. Sounds pretty caveman, but in merganser world that's how they roll.

I like to capture photos where you can see both sexes, however this female was a bit out of the photo and in the process of drinking when I snapped this one. However the drake is full on for this shot. Unfortunately they were not taking directions as in all my nature shots so it is what it is...

Teal,

Order ;- Anseriformes,

Family ;- Anatidae,

Species ;- Anas crecca,

The smallest common surface-feeding duck, the Teal is agile and quick in flight, its movements recalling those of a wader, Nervous groups may often swoop down to a sheltered bay, only to dart over the water surface and wheel up and away once more, sometimes several such approaches precede their eventual settling,

In places, Teal occur in hundreds but 20 - 40 are more typical, scattered along well-vegetated or muddy shores, or in wet marshes,

Breeds in N and E Europe on freshwater marshes and wet moor and heaths, including high moorland pools, Winters more widely in S and W Europe, mostly on fresh waters with muddy edges and around estuaries, An absence of bright colours on the bill and legs helps to identify the female Teal,

Voice ;- Male has lod, ringing, high-pitched ' cirk crik ' that can be easily heard at long range marshes or estuaeies, female has high quack,

Nesting ;- Down-lined hollow near water, 8 - 11 eggs 1 brood, April - June,

Feeding ;- Mosly in water or on muddy shores, taking plants and seeds,

Length ;- 34 - 38 cm ( 13.5 - 15 in ),

Wingspan ;- 58 - 64 cm ( 23 - 25 in ), Weight,- 250 - 400 g ( 9 - 14 oz ).

Social ;- Small flocks,

Lifespan ;- 10 - 15 years,

Status ;- Secure,

The mallard (/ˈmælɑːrd, ˈmælərd/) or wild duck (Anas platyrhynchos) is a dabbling duck that breeds throughout the temperate and subtropical Americas, Eurasia, and North Africa. It has been introduced to New Zealand, Australia, Peru, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, the Falkland Islands, and South Africa. This duck belongs to the subfamily Anatinae of the waterfowl family Anatidae. Males (drakes) have green heads, while the females (hens) have mainly brown-speckled plumage. Both sexes have an area of white-bordered black or iridescent purple or blue feathers called a speculum on their wings; males especially tend to have blue speculum feathers.

Optics can be so much fun. Here a mute swan and probably it's mate are just in the right juxtaposition to look like a swan with two heads OR it actually is a two-headed swan!! What are the odds? Hey, I just took the picture and no photoshoping was performed ;-)

Although most references to which I have access imply that a significant amount of yellow color on the bill is more indicative of female Barrow's Goldeneye, I commonly see it on the beaks of Common Goldeneyes, like this female.

Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis)

South America

The southern screamer (Chauna torquata), also known as the crested screamer, belongs to the order Anseriformes. It is found in southeastern Peru, northern Bolivia, Paraguay, southern Brazil, Uruguay and northern Argentina. Its diet consists of plants stems, seeds, leaves, and, rarely, small animals.

The southern screamer is a good swimmer, having partially webbed feet, but prefers to move on the ground. The bony spurs on its wings are used for protection against rival screamers and other enemies. Although it is non-migratory, it is an excellent flier. It lives in large flocks, feeding on the ground in grasslands and cultivated fields until nesting season, when birds pair off. Male and female screamers are similar in appearance.

The southern screamer establishes monogamous relationships that last its lifetime, estimated to be 15 years. Courtship involves loud calling by both sexes, which can be heard up to two miles away. For the nest the couple makes a big platform of reeds, straws, and other aquatic plants in an inaccessible place near water. The female lays between two and seven white eggs. The couple share incubation, which takes 43 to 46 days. Chicks leave the nest as soon as they hatch, but the parents care for them for several weeks. The fledging period takes 8 to 14 weeks.

Conservation status is of Least Concern according to the IUCN. Info from Wikipedia

Mute Swan, Order Anseriformes, Family Anatidae, Species Cygnus olor,..

A large, familiar bird, strikingly white and obvious even at great range, Mute Swan is generally quite tame, even semi-domesticated in its behaviour and choice of habitat.

Territorial pairs are aggressive, even to people or their dogs, using impressive displays of arched wings and loud, hissing calls.

In some floodplains, small groups regularly feed on dry land, a habit that is more consistent with the two " wild swans ", Bewick's and Whooper,

Voice - Strangled trumpeting and hissing notes,

Nesting - Huge pile of vegetation at water's edge; up to 8 eggs; 1 brood; March - June.

Feeding - Plucks vegetable matter from short grass in fields and salt marshes, pulls the same from shallow water, or upends in deeper water,..

Length 1.4 - 1.6m,

Wingspan - 2,08 - 2.38m,

Weight - 10 - 12kg,

Lifespan - 15 - 20 years,

Social - Small flocks,

Status - Secure,...

Still appalling conditions for testing out the new lens but at the low light levels it was really excellent. I would never have got away with this with the old Sigma. Chromatic aberration is also way down and everything just feels lifted a notch. My hubby says he's like to have a go with the Sigma on the 550D so it looks like it could have a happy retirement after all.

Continuing my story from yesterday... The Mallard brood on the log was growing restless and one chick decided that it needed to climb up a bit higher and be closer to mom, who was still sleeping. This chick stood up and flapped it's little arms a bit, then settled down to keep watch.

Taken 8 June 2018 at Westchester Lagoon, Anchorage, Alaska.

This Australian Wood Duck family was feeding in the shallows but moved off a bit as I came along.

As usual Mr Woody put himself in harm's way to protect the family as Mrs Woody led the ducklings away from the bank.

Mrs Woody would also put herself on the line to protect the ducklings but if both are close it seems to me that the male always takes the most dangerous position..in this case between the family and the ravening photographer.
