Jupiter, I shot this a wee while ago.. 2010 October 6-7

An animation of about 1/3 of Jupiter's rotation, captured using a 25cm Newtonian telescope at f5.6 and a Philips SPC900NC, using wxAstrocapture to control the webcam and record the videos to disc. A new video was shot every 10 minutes over three hours.

Registax was used to process each video. About 500 video frames (each 1/100s exposure) were averaged (stacked) for each frame of the final animation.

Registax was also used for the final registration of the frames for the animation, then Imagemagick to make the final animated GIF you see here (by clicking on the original-size option). Non "pro" flickr users can see the animation here: dl.dropbox.com/u/11530205/jupiter_rot.gif

It is not really very good, but serves of an example of what you can achieve using basic equipment and the wonderful software tools freely available.

For animation, download the original file, get the URL or copy and paste an HTML link.

Animation Courtyard

The Magic of Disney Animation -- This attraction underwent a major rehab in November 2003, and then another minor rehab in October 2004. Here's the current format:

The tour begins with visitors sitting in an area featuring a live artist. The 10-minute segment, called "Drawn to Animation," features the artist interacting with an animated version of the tiny dragon Mushu, from 1998's popular feature Mulan. After hearing about the importance of character development and watching a humorous video with some Mulan artists, guests will visit the area that overlooks what USED to be the workspace of Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida. The Cast Member in this segment talks briefly about animation, and answers a few questions. Unfortunately, the real Disney animators were all laid off in early January 2003, and the entire animation process relocated to Disney's California studios, so there is nothing much to see when you are released from that part of the tour. After the cast member's talk, visitors have the chance to visit a number of interactive activities or to sit for 15-20 minutes at a Mickey-themed animator table and create their own Disney character art at the Animation Academy, under the guidance of a Disney artist.

The Sound Stage -- In this hands-on activity, young animators can play with various sound effects and create their own soundtrack for an animated scene.

Digital Ink and Paint -- As these workstations you can add color to an animated scene, and create your own atmosphere.

You're a Character -- In this booth, you can visit with Lumiere (of Beauty and the Beast fame), who will ask you a series of questions and tell you which Disney character you are most like.

Mingle Media TV and Red Carpet Report host, Linda Antwi, were invited to cover Disney•Pixar’s “Monsters University” blue carpet at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood. This was the WORLD PREMIERE of Disney•Pixar’s frighteningly fun “Monsters University,” featuring the voices of Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi and Helen Mirren.

About Monster University

Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a Scarer—and he knows better than anyone that the best Scarers come from Monsters University (MU). But during his first semester at MU, Mike’s plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot James P. Sullivan, “Sulley” (voice of John Goodman), a natural-born Scarer. The pair’s out-of-control competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program. To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters, if they ever hope to make things right. Screaming with laughter and oozing with heart, Disney•Pixar’s “Monsters University” is directed by Dan Scanlon (“Cars,” “Mater and the Ghostlight,” “Tracy”), produced by Kori Rae (“Up,” “The Incredibles,” “Monsters, Inc.”) and features music from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and award-winning composer Randy Newman (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Toy Story 3”). Much more on the way so watch out!!

Before the days of CGI, Photoshop, and digital cameras, "state-of-the-art" animation and visual effects work was done with huge bulky camera rigs, outfitted with motion control systems that allowed the rigs to precisely move about whatever needed to be filmed...be it a model spaceship, flat artwork, or an actor on a set.

Shown here is the compound-table section of an Oxberry Master Series Animation Stand. The compound had three axis of movement: EW (left/right), NS (towards/away from you), and Rotation (clockwise/counter-clockwise). There were also (4) geared bars incorporated into the tabletop called 'peg bars' that allowed artwork to be mounted and moved EW, locally to the table's rotational position.

All these axis could be mounted with stepper motors and run under precise computer control to allow ultra-smooth compound multi-axis movement...and could be repeated (if need be) any number of times with a positional repeat accuracy of 1/2000th of an inch.

The table's center had a glass-covered opening that allowed diffused light to shine through to add the ability for filming backlit graphics like large transparencies or gel-colored high-contrast film negatives (Kodaliths).

Animation showing dust deposition on the front right part of Curiosity rover between sols 84 and 868. A cleaning event occurred between sols 613 and 868, likely due to the wind. For example, look at the checkerboard pattern device.

Individual images are mosaics of MAHLI pictures taken at sol 84, sol 177, sol 613 and sol 868.

been working on this animation with Luke Jinks for a while now, and it's finally online!! So GO WATCH IT here www.vimeo.com/6130123

This is a thin section of a meteorite called NWA 2864 (NorthWest Africa). It was found in the Sahara and exported from Morocco in 2000.

It is a brecciated chondrite. Brecciated means composed of mixed, crushed material. The brighter bits in the image are silicate minerals, including mostly olivine. The darker bits are the matrix material (the "glue" that holds it all together, and was once shock-melted rock).

The rounded area near the center is matrix surrounding a highly shocked chondrule. The small, dark circles with bright centers are air bubbles in the cement that holds the wafer-thin meteorite section to the microscope slide.

This is a 20X enlargement of the original.

Click on All Sizes to view Original Size and see the animation run. The animation is made by combining 17 different frames, each of which has a polarizer turned 5 degrees from the preceding frame. Note that the area in the lower right seems clear in the beginning but shows obvious radial shock lines as the polarization angle changes.

Thin section acquired from Mike Kagelmacher (Rock-Slides on eBay).

The Animation Decathlon is a unique interactive arts installation combining cutting edge architectural projections, outdoor video gaming and original sound design in the courtyard of Kensington Town Hall.

The event is the culmination of a year long project working with children and young people across Kensington and Chelsea to create a fantastic series of 2012 - inspired drawings and animations. Click here to find out more about the project

On Saturday 21 March, the animated athletes and crowds they’ve created will be projected metres high onto the Town Hall and surrounding buildings where they will sprint, pole vault and swim across the sides of the buildings transforming the area into an ‘Olympic’ arena.
