Canadian Forces Station Alert, Nunavut
Gusting winds are the first sign of the blizzard to come, blowing snow around the Alert Destination sign at a face-numbing pace on the 19th of March, 2011. It would be the second blizzard to hit Canadian Forces Station Alert in a week. The Destination sign allows visitors to see at a glance how far the station is from many different cities in Canada and beyond.
Canadian Forces Station Alert was first settled in 1950 as part of the Joint Arctic Weather System. It is the northern most permantly inhabited point in the world and was named after a British ship, the HMS Alert. Today, CFS Alert plays an important role in establishing Canadian soverenty in the north.

Watercolour on paper 30x30cm. Have yet to really capture a hare - they are really rough, wild, sinewy and alert - utterly unlike rabbits. Will keep trying.
I got called into work yesterday as my ambulance service declared a 'major incident' due to the heavy snowfall across the Yorkshire area and the major disruption to traffic including our ambulances. So many vehicles getting stuck on roads, blocking them and many roads inpassable due to snow and ice meant that our ambulances could not get to the jobs they needed to. Lots of our stafff having to leave the ambulance and walk some distances with equipment to attend to the patients. Then sorting the logistics of getting the ptient to the ambulance and onward to hospital!
A number of 4x4 drivers stepped up across the area and assited our crews in getting and from people's houses. The ambulance service itself hired in some 4x4 vehicles to help staff get to work and home again. Plus sending out a call for off duty staff to come in if possible to help.
I was on my day off so I walked into work and worked through until 02.00am and work gave me a lift home!!
I work for Yorkshire Ambulance Service in and around the city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire.
It’s a great job and I feel very honoured to be able to help people at their point of need.

According to the Inter-regional Environment Department IRCEL the concentrations of particulate matter measured in the air are again too high. A speed-limit of 90 km/hr on most motorways and orbitals in the country should help. Speed reductions will also come into effect in Brussels.

This is the entryway to the alert facility where SAC flight crews spent about 10 days of every month, in a large bunker, close to their aircraft. The bombers were loaded with nuclear weapons, and ready to go at a moment's notice. My father disappeared into this gate (and others like it) every few weeks, for my entire childhood and adolescence. That was the Cold War era.
Blytheville Air Force Base (later called Eaker AFB) was closed in around 1992, I believe.
