I haven't had a camera lens that has enough range to get decent photos of wildlife yet, but I was able to get a pic of this squirrel in the backyard chomping on some nuts and seeds.

This bull elk was part of a group of seven bulls that were being sized up by the wolves in the photos I have been posting. I did'nt see any elk killed, but the hard conditions of winhter have killed many bulls since they go into the winter in a weak stte from the fall breeding season.

This Red Shouldered Hawk was huge. I was walking along a path at Felts Audubon Preserve in Palmetto and he swooped down from a tree slightly behind me. He cleared my head by about 5-10 feet and then found his perch where I captured this emage. As always, Thank You for visiting. Balancing a full work week and devoting sufficient time to my passion for photography can be difficult. I try to post the very best of my efforts. Your comments, faves and invitations are always welcome.

Operation Stand Down

In military parlance, to "stand down" is to relax from a state of combat readiness, or alertness.

Operation Stand Down refers to a grassroots, community-based intervention program designed to help the nation’s estimated 300,000 homeless veterans by providing access to community, state and federal resources. Operation Stand Down Huntsville - a non-profit 501(c)(3) - continues the mission by assisting the homeless veterans in the community.

A Stand Down brings together various agencies and service providers in one location for one to three days to provide a comprehensive system that encourages and assists homeless veterans in addressing their individual problems and rebuilding their lives. In the military, Stand Down afforded battle-weary soldiers the opportunity to renew their spirit, health and overall sense of well-being. Today’s Stand Down affords the same opportunity to homeless veterans.

Operation Stand Down began in San Diego, California during the Spring of 1988 with a group of Vietnam Veterans. The first Operation Stand Down Huntsville was in 2007, and was organized by local UAW1413 members, Huntsville Career Center and other concerned community members. After attending a Nashville, Tennessee Stand Down event that year, UAW members evaluated the need for a similar event in Madison County and began identifying needs, gathering resources and initiating a plan of action.

Service agencies on hand for the first stand-down were: Social Security, Veterans Affairs, VA Medical, Vocational Rehabilitation and Education, State Vocational Rehabilitation Services, Madison County Food Stamps, Crisis Services, American Red Cross, Down Town Rescue Mission, Legal Services, Still Serving Veterans, HUD, State Employment Services, WIA and clergy from the VA and local churches. Students from Virginia College provided haircuts and shaves for the veterans.

Stand Down locations are held in various cities nationwide throughout the year. A partial list of locations, dates and contact information may be found here: www.va.gov/homeless/standdown.asp
