The newest addition to the Top Shelf Company hospitality fleet is a custom built 53' foot Featherlite trailer with two massive 36' slide-outs. Previously serving as a mobile office building, this trailer has been transformed into a world class hospitality center by Trailers of the East Coast in Mocksville, NC. The hospitality center will be at the race track during the Bank of America 500 Sprint Cup Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday, October 12, 2013.
In an example of a fitting combination of vision and purpose, this amazing unit will be serving fans of Quicken Loans Racing NASCAR driver Ryan Newman of the Stewart-Haas Racing team. Just like Quicken Loans, this mobile hospitality trailer has been "Engineered to Amaze."

We rescued this little chap from the beak of an angry Muscovy Duck. It was really pecking at it and tossing it about so we just had to get involved. On route home we went via the local pet food warehouse and got some proper duckling food, he made short work with a load of that. We then introduced him to our pond for a swim. He's now fast asleep in front of a mirror amongst some cuddly toys. Our cats are intrigued to say the least. Not got a name for him................ yet.
The new addition to the Ft. Sam Theatre will seat 600 people and features:
-state-of-the-art lighting and acoustics
-a dance studio with the same wood floor as the stage
-a performers' lounge
-an audio/video mixing and recording studio
-Army Entertainment command suite and administrative offices
-an outdoor projector for projecting images against the addition's upper wall
-receiving ramps for moving sets from trucks to theatre
-catwalks rigged to the ceiling for production personnel
-an 80-foot “fly house” pulley system for quick set changes
Designed and outfitted with the latest equipment and features based on a design by RKJ, Inc. subcontractor construction team. Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon and Williams Theater Consultants, the same company that designed the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio, contributed design concepts as well. Husband-and-wife theatre veterans Steve Smith and Nicole Coppinger brought their thespian background and insight to the project. The team proposed the theatre as the new home of the Army Soldier, and it will also play host to Operation Rising Star, USA Express, and concerts from touring music and entertainment stars.
Smith, technical director for the Army Soldier Show, has 20 years' experience in professional theatre and got his start working in Army Entertainment at Ft. Gordon. Coppinger, set designer for the Soldier Show, received her bachelor's degree in fine arts and has worked on Broadway in New York City. They worked with RKJ Construction, Inc., IMCOM Force Management Division and the Army Corps of Engineers to ensure that the new theatre would meet the standards necessary for a comprehensive training venue for budding artists and a Broadway-caliber theatre.
At the same time, all parties took great care to ensure that the front part of the original theatre, which contains the stage, main lobby, ticket box, original entrance and facade and VIP seating were restored to their authentic 1927 look. The carpet, paint, furniture, wood etching and silk banners hanging from the ceiling will all be restored or replicated as closely to the original as possible.
The project, which cost $18 million, started in early 2009 and will be completed in September 2011.

Built in 1892-1893, this Chicago School-style skyscraper was designed by Adler and Sullivan for the Union Trust Company, a bank. The building, a follow-up to the more famous Wainwright Building one block to the south, is considered to be a more pure expression of Louis Sullivan’s design philosophy than the Wainwright Building, though the later Guaranty Building (Buffalo, New York, 1896) is perhaps the most pure expression of Sullivan’s ideas applied to a surviving skyscraper. The building bears some similarities to the nearby Wainwright Building, but features a tan exterior, light court that is open to the front facade, and has been more heavily modified.
The building originally featured an ornate first and second floor facade with an arched entryway, rich Sullivanesque ornament, and oxeye windows, which was unfortunately removed during a modernization in 1924, and was replaced with new terra cotta cladding, rectilinear bays, and a rectilinear entrance, which were given Sullivanesque trim surrounds, but bear little resemblance to the original exterior facade. The only unmodified section of the first and second floor facade is along the west elevation, where the original elliptical oxeye window bays are intact, but this facade is simpler, with buff brick cladding and no ornament. Around the same time as the renovation of the base of the facade, a four-bay addition was built on the north side of the building along 7th Street, which bears many of the same features as the original building. Above the second floor, the original exterior is intact, with buff brick cladding and piers, a bay window in the back of the central light well, arched windows on the twelfth floor, and ornament including lion’s head gargoyles, and motifs inspired by flora on the thirteenth and fourteenth floors, which feature window bays separated by engaged columns, terminating in a heavily decorated flared cornice. Inside, the building features a lobby with a restored ceiling and stained glass skylight, as well as the original elevator doors and elevator landings with marble wall cladding.
The building was designated a St. Louis Landmark in 1971, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The building served as offices until the early 21st Century, with multiple alterations prior to that. Between 2015 and 2018, the building was rehabilitated to house the Hotel St. Louis, which continues to operate inside the building. Regrettably, the renovation did not include a restoration of the first and second floors of the building’s facade, but it saved the rest of the building’s historic details, and gave it a new purpose.
I fell in love with this plant at the greenhouse. I really don't need anymore but the color was so nice that I had to buy it. So here it is in my garden. It's called Scabiosa or "Pin Cushion Flower."

"Capitol Hill, in addition to being a metonym for the United States Congress, is the largest historic residential neighborhood in Washington, D.C., stretching easterly in front of the United States Capitol along wide avenues. It is one of the oldest residential neighborhoods in Washington, D.C., and, with roughly 35,000 people in just under 2 square miles (5 km2), it is also one of the most densely populated.
As a geographic feature, Capitol Hill rises near the center of the District of Columbia and extends eastward. Pierre (Peter) Charles L'Enfant, as he began to develop his plan for the new federal capital city in 1791, chose to locate the "Congress House" (the Capitol building) on the crest of the hill at a site that he characterized as a "pedestal waiting for a monument." The Capitol building has been the home of the Congress of the United States and the workplace of many residents of the Capitol Hill neighborhood since 1800.
The Capitol Hill neighborhood today straddles two quadrants of the city, Southeast and Northeast. A large portion of the neighborhood is now designated as the Capitol Hill Historic District.
The name Capitol Hill is often used to refer to both the historic district and to the larger neighborhood around it. To the east of Capitol Hill lies the Anacostia River, to the north is the H Street corridor, to the south are the Southeast/Southwest Freeway and the Washington Navy Yard, and to the west are the National Mall and the city's central business district.
The Capitol building is surrounded by the Capitol Hill Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The Capitol Hill Historic District was expanded in 2015 to the north to include the blocks bordered by 2nd Street, F Street, 4th Street, and just south of H Street, NE, collectively known as the Swampoodle Addition.
Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia, also known as just Washington or simply D.C., is the capital city and federal district of the United States. It is located on the east bank of the Potomac River, which forms its southwestern and southern border with the U.S. state of Virginia, and it shares a land border with the U.S. state of Maryland on its other sides. The city was named for George Washington, a Founding Father and the first president of the United States, and the federal district is named after Columbia, the female personification of the nation. As the seat of the U.S. federal government and several international organizations, the city is an important world political capital. It is one of the most visited cities in the U.S. with over 20 million annual visitors as of 2016.
The U.S. Constitution provides for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of Congress; the district is not a part of any U.S. state (nor is it one itself). The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of the capital district located along the Potomac River near the country's East Coast. The City of Washington was founded in 1791, and Congress held its first session there in 1800. In 1801, the territory, formerly part of Maryland and Virginia (including the settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria), officially became recognized as the federal district. In 1846, Congress returned the land originally ceded by Virginia, including the city of Alexandria; in 1871, it created a single municipal government for the remaining portion of the district. There have been efforts to make the city into a state since the 1880s, a movement that has gained momentum in recent years, and a statehood bill passed the House of Representatives in 2021.
The city is divided into quadrants centered on the Capitol, and there are as many as 131 neighborhoods. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 689,545, which makes it the 23rd most populous city in the U.S. as of 2020, the third most populous city in the Mid-Atlantic, and gives it a population larger than that of two U.S. states: Wyoming and Vermont. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's daytime population to more than one million during the workweek. Washington's metropolitan area, the country's sixth largest (including parts of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia), had a 2020 estimated population of 6.3 million residents; and over 54 million people live within 250 mi (400 km) of the District.
The three branches of the U.S. federal government are centered in the district: Congress (legislative), the president (executive), and the Supreme Court (judicial). Washington is home to many national monuments and museums, primarily situated on or around the National Mall. The city hosts 177 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of many international organizations, trade unions, non-profits, lobbying groups, and professional associations, including the World Bank Group, the International Monetary Fund, the Organization of American States, AARP, the National Geographic Society, the American Red Cross, and others.
A locally elected mayor and a 13-member council have governed the district since 1973. Congress maintains supreme authority over the city and may overturn local laws. The District of Columbia does not have representation in Congress, although D.C. residents elect a single at-large congressional delegate to the House of Representatives who has no vote. District voters choose three presidential electors in accordance with the Twenty-third Amendment to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1961." - info from Wikipedia.
The fall of 2022 I did my 3rd major cycling tour. I began my adventure in Montreal, Canada and finished in Savannah, GA. This tour took me through the oldest parts of Quebec and the 13 original US states. During this adventure I cycled 7,126 km over the course of 2.5 months and took more than 68,000 photos. As with my previous tours, a major focus was to photograph historic architecture.

This is an outstanding 1950s polished cotton plus size dress. Just a splendid stunning addition to your wardrobe. A true beautiful garden party dress... Has a cuffed boat neckline and a back metal closure. Displayed with a petticoat does not come with the dress as well as the necklace. It is in excellent vintage condition. Love the design as it is straight down the front and then gathers on the sides for that special look. This is what really makes the dress. Any spots you might see are just from my camera. Dress will need to be dry-cleaned to freshen. Color is bright black. I love the style of years gone by especially the 1950s.

A menagerie of interesting astronomical finds are visible in this image from the Hubble Space Telescope. In addition to several large elliptical galaxies, a ring-shaped galaxy is lurking on the right of the image. A pair of bright stars are also visible at the left of the image, notable for their colorful crisscrossing diffraction spikes. This collection of astronomical curiosities is the galaxy cluster ACO S520, located in the constellation Pictor.
ACO S520 represents one of a series of Hubble observations searching for massive, luminous galaxy clusters that had not been captured by earlier surveys. Astronomers took advantage of occasional gaps in Hubble's busy schedule to capture images of these barely explored galaxy clusters, revealing a wealth of interesting targets for further study with Hubble and the James Webb Space Telescope.
Galaxy clusters are among the largest known objects in the universe. Studying these objects can provide insights into the distribution of dark matter, the mysterious substance that makes up most of the mass of a galaxy cluster.

The house has been far too quiet since my rats died, every home should have an animal in it.
So this morning we got ourselves a cat.
She is a 1 year old Selkirk Rex who needed re-homing, full pedigree.
She is settling in very well so far, exploring the house and investigating everything.
No doubt this will be the first of many photos of her!
In addition to being one of Oahu's most famous surfing spots, Laniakea Beach is home to 24 green sea turtles, a protected species which frequent this beach on a daily basis to relax and eat seaweed.

TE311 was built atCastle Bromwich just after the war had ended, being taken on charge by the Air Ministry on 8th June 1945
TE311 ispainted to represent Spitfire Mk XVIe TB675 ‘4D-V’ of No 74Squadron, the personal aircraft of Squadron Leader AJ ‘Tony’ Reeves DFC, theSquadron’s Commanding Officer from the end of December 1944. No 74Squadron was part of 145 Wing, 2 TAF. InMarch 1945, whilst based at Drope, just inside Germany, the Squadron receivedSpitfire XVIs, which it flew alongside its LFIXs, using them as fighter-bombers on armed-reconnaissance and close air supportoperations during the advance into Germany. The ground targets attacked by the Spitfires during the lastmonths of the war were numerous and varied. These operations exposed the Spitfires and their pilots to extremelydangerous return fire from the ground – everything from deadly 88mmanti-aircraft guns to small arms fire."
MK356 was involved in fighter sweeps and in attacking ground targets by dive bombing and strafing in the lead-up to the ‘D-Day’ invasion and in support of the landings and fierce fighting afterwards. In 60 days of furious flying and fighting, ‘MK’ flew 60 operational sorties, was damaged by enemy fire on three occasions and suffered three ‘wheels-up’ landings. On D-Day+1 (7 June 1944) during a beachhead cover patrol in MK356, ‘Gord’ Ockenden’s flight engaged four ME Bf 109Gs “on the deck”. He fired at one of the ‘109’s and saw his rounds hitting the enemy aircraft. His wingman finished it off and each pilot was credited with a half share of the kill. On 14 June 1944 the aircraft’s third ‘wheels-up’ landing of the war ended its short but intense operational life, as the next day the Squadron moved to airfield ‘B-3’ in France and ‘MK’ was left behind to be collected and stored by a maintenance unit. Spitfire MK356 is now painted to represent Spitfire Mk IXc ML214, coded ‘5J-K’, the personal aircraft of Squadron Leader ‘Johnny’ Plagis, the Commanding Officer of No 126 Squadron from July 1944. Plagis named all of his personal Spitfires after his sister ‘Kay’ (Katrina) and ML214 bore her name on the port side above two scrolls displaying 16 swastikas - his kill markings. The aircraft is painted with black and white invasion stripes on the underside of the wings and rear fuselage. For some unknown reason, certain fighter units of the UK-based No 10 Group, Air Defence of Great Britain (ADGB), painted non-standard, narrower stripes on their aircraft (nine inches wide instead of the standard eighteen) and this was how the 126 Squadron Spitfires were marked."

Pretty good batch, methinks. No BJDs for the first time in years, though! Ah well: 2013 will make up for that. ;P

The Eiger Express Cable Car is a recent addition to the mountain transport in the Jungfrau region, and carries passengers from Grindelwald to Eigergletscher in 15 minutes. The previous best time would have been about an hour, on two trains via Kleine Scheidegg. I was told that only Zermatt, and Whistler of the World's ski-resorts had a cable car of this standard. Each cabin on the car holds about 30 people, and there is a cabin every couple of minutes. It is a great trip.

In addition to books that teach Chinese, Jackie Chan handed out special rulers that contain actual film strips of his classic movies such as Police Story to all the kids who participated. I'm so jealous!!! I bet those kids won't fully appreciate them since they weren't even around when those movies came out. Heh heh, if I was one of those kids' dad, I'd convince him that the ruler is useless and that he doesn't really want it. Then I'd keep it all to myself. >=)
