The Church of St. Sebald in Nuremberg (St. Sebald)
The Sebalduskirche is, in addition to St. Lawrence one of the two large main churches of Nuremberg. It is located not far from the Main market in the northern half of the old town. The most important work of art in the church is the Sebaldus sepulchre - by Peter Vischer the Elder and two sons over several years created (about 1509-19). In addition to works of the great Nuremberg sculptors Veit Stoss and Adam Kraft, there also can be found executed designs by Albrecht Dürer for "his parish church".
The foundation of the mother church of St. Sebald by the legendary hermit Sebald probably occurred in the period around 1050/60. It was the Peter and Paul church in today's district of Fürth-Poppenreuth. The Holy Sebald (canonization on March 26, 1425 by Pope Martin V) died around 1070. According to one of the traditions, the team of oxen in the transfer of his body stood still where now the towers of Sebaldus church overtop the roofs of the Old Town of Sebald. Therefore, was built then at this point the Peter chapel. Another theory suggests that Sebald had built the chapel in 1050 himself. After the death of Sebald were reported at his grave from 1070 on miracle cures. The subsequently setting in pilgrimages triggered the renaming of the church in St. Sebald.
The Peter chapel was replaced in the years 1230-40 by the construction of a late Romanesque pillar basilica. The consecration of St. Peter's Choir (September 9, 1274) suggests a completion of construction in the years 1274/75.
The extension of the aisles and the heightening of the towers in high Gotic style took place 1309-45, followed was this by the construction of the late Gothic hall choir in the years 1358-79. Installation of the galleries and a baroquisation of the equipment were carried out in middle of the 17th century.
After the renaturation by the conservationist, painter and architect Karl Alexander Heideloff, followed in the years 1888-1906 an extensive restoration under the leadership of architect Josef (Joseph?) Schmitz.
The 1237 completed Bamberg Cathedral was probably the model for the Doppelchörigkeit (consisting of two chancels) of Sebaldus church.
All roofs, the chancel arch and the towers of the church were largely destroyed during World War II. The reconstruction, under the direction of architect William Schlegtendal, lasted very long, and in some partial areas is still going on. The main works in the interior and exterior have been completed in 1957, the repair of the western gallery with the angel choir even lasted until 30 years after the war (1976-77).
Fritz Nadler writes after the first air raid on October 3, 1944 in his diary (I saw as Nuremberg was going down): "Now I'm standing in the middle of the greatest chaos. At Albrecht-Dürer square. The prince of painting made of ore with patched jacket stands intact on a marbled base. (...) He looks to the parsonage of St. Sebald in which he once along with Pfinzing illustrated the "Theuerdank (The Heroic Life of Sir Theuerdank)". The vicarage remained intact, together with the precious very small Pfinzing choir. Not a stick of noble relief representation of Mary's life is in the least bruised. The suction of the bomb has dealt graciously with the Blessed mother."
After the heavy air raids on 02 January 1945, Fritz Nadler describes the following day the sinister picture of Sebalduskirche: "Today the once fine-looking massive structure looks miserable. It is like a skeleton. The massive roof construction mostly fell down. From the still above hanging, reduced into fragments heavy beams rise pale-gray whisps of smoke. A proof that the fire continues to smolder. Every day, crashes new roof woodwork burnt to a cinder on the meters high rubble under which the pews, altar and church facilities are smashed and buried. From the dreary, pointed arched window openings pour smoke and soot. For weeks ...! Thank God that some of the valuable, leaded stained glass works were shifted in time. This raises anxious questions: What happened to Henry Traxdorf's organ from 1444? Has Fischer's miracle work of early German Renaissance, the "Sebaldus sepulchre", under the thick concrete shell of collapsed thousand-ton load withstood? Accusingly the Sebaldus towers which became dull and were deprived of their ringings rise into the brightening up January sky...!"
In and at the Sebalduskirche many unique works of art can be found. Outside there is, for example, the Schreyer-Landauer-Epitaph (emerged 1490/92) by Adam Kraft and of course the mighty portals - inside, next to the Sebaldus sepulchre, the Loeffelholzaltar, works by Veit Stoss and Adam Kraft. The glass paintings mainly go back to foundations of Nuremberg patriciate. The silver shrine of Sebaldus sepulchre was even twice forced open by thieves (1461 and 1506).
Diagonally across from St. Sebald is the Sebalder rectory with very small Sebald choir and the last preserved medieval courtyard of Nuremberg.
To 1520 was the northern place of the church, current Sebald square, part of the surrounding church cemetery, the "Sebald graveyard". The official designation read "Behind St. Sebald".

The latest addition to the building stock at Beamish Museum is this beautifully re-created band practice hall, originally from Hetton-le-Hole in east Durham.
Hetton Silver Band was created in 1887 and, in common with many similar mining communities became a very important part of the lives of the mining families. This building was built in 1912 in South Market Street and replaced the former tin hut as their band practice venue. It remained in use until 2009, when the band merged with the Durham Miners Association Brass Band.
The building became derelict and was in danger of being lost forever until it was donated to Beamish Museum by it's owners, Durham Miners Association. Thanks to their generousity in donating, and thanks to a considerable fund-raising effort by the local community and the museum, the building is now safely preserved in it's new environment.
The building was officially opened on 11 May 2013.

New Castle United Methodist Church is a prominent structure (with its steep-pitched bright red roof) in the small town of New Castle, Craig County, Virginia. Built on land deeded to the church for $1, the frame church on stone foundation is one-story high. The church, built about 1893, is in Greek Revival style. A quatrefoil stained-glass window is in the front gable; on the side are pointed-arch stained-glass windows. The original belfry on the red, standing-seam-metal roof is square with open widows; it has an unusual shaped roof supported by large brackets. The belfry culminates in a sharp point. The vestibule is an addition to the original church as are the two rear sections. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places as part of the New Castle Historic District on October 25, 1973. NRHP ID #73002005

This Hubble Space Telescope image features a bright spiral galaxy known as MCG-01-24-014, which is located about 275 million light-years from Earth. In addition to being a well-defined spiral galaxy, MCG-01-24-014 has an extremely energetic core, known as an active galactic nucleus (AGN), so it is referred to as an active galaxy.
Even more specifically, it is categorised as a Type-2 Seyfert galaxy. Seyfert galaxies host one of the most common subclasses of AGN, alongside quasars. Seyfert galaxies tend to be relatively nearby ones where the host galaxy remains plainly detectable alongside its central AGN, while quasars are very distant AGNs whose incredible luminosities outshine their host galaxies.

A recent addition to Beamish Museum's railway rolling stock is this replica 2ft gauge snowplough, seen here on a temporary track in the colliery yard. The plough has been faithfully recreated from photographs of the real thing formerly used by the Weardale Lead Company.

I've been doing well on my self-imposed toy/plushie diet, and haven't bought almost anything for the last three months! :0 That's a huge step for me, LOL! But here are a couple of recent purchases...
after resisting several other extremely cute Hello Kitty plushies/items/etc. I had to buy this sweet little lamb Hello Kitty! ♥ After admiring photos of her on Flickr, found her completely by accident at the store last week. :D
I hope to continue with my "toy diet"--I find it is getting easier to resist those impulse buys! The only thing that's not off-limits are Lalaloopsies (but even those I haven't bought in several months!)

We added an outdoor living space for this wonderful couple. They now have a balcony that they can sit out on enjoying some sips of wine and enjoying their amazing view.
New window installed in June 2014 in the east walk of the cloister designed and made in the cathedral workshop by artist & conservator Alison Eaton.

In the first half of the 20th century a plan was drawn up to fill the traceries of the cloister windows with stained glass, but this got no further than a single window in the east walk and two in the west. Recently a further two windows have been added in a more contemporary style, and hopefully further commemorative pieces may yet be added by future generations.
Arguably the most important of England's cathedrals and its Mother Church, few other buildings embody the nation's history as much as this one. It also bears the distinction of being the first major example of Gothic architecture in Britain, where French masons introduced the style during the rebuilding of the choir following a major fire in the 1170s. Throughout the following centuries it became one of Europe's leading centres of pilgrimage, when thousands flocked to venerate the shrine of murdered archbishop St Thomas Becket, but brought to an abrupt end with the English Reformation, when a saint who defied a monarch was viewed with particular enmity. Though all traces of the rich shrine were destroyed, the site of Becket's martyrdom in the north transept remains a place of reverence to this day.
The cathedral is a stunning building which represents both the earliest and latest styles of English Gothic architecture, from the French inspired eastern limb and apse, to the nave, transepts and the three towers, all soaring examples of the Perpendicular style, the central tower (the 'Bell Harry') being an especially fine structure (the north-west tower was rebuilt in the 1830s as a copy of its medieval neighbour on the south side following the demolition of an earlier Norman tower, thus the present symmetry of the west façade is a relatively recent feature, originally its mismatched towers would have given it a more Continental appearance).
The earliest parts of the cathedral however are Norman, represented the easternmost chapels and transepts flanking the choir, survivors of the fire of 1174, each transept being adorned by a richly decorated miniature tower. The crypt below is the finest in the country, extending below most of the east end (with a transitional early Gothic extension to the east under the apse). Superb examples of Romanesque art can be seen in many of the crypt's sculpted capitals, and the unusually well preserved murals in St Gabriel's chapel (sadly photography is forbidden in these areas).
The cathedral contains many notable tombs and monuments of all periods from the 13th to 20th centuries, foremost amongst them being the tombs of Edward the Black Prince (with a superb bronze effigy) and King Henry IV.
It's most celebrated feature is its wonderful collection of stained glass, much of it dating back to the late 12th and early 13th centuries including a sequence of the Ancestors of Christ and the especially beautiful 'Miracle windows' in the ambulatory (relating various miracles associated with Becket's shrine). The glass is justly famous as the very finest in Britain, its deep blues and reds often compared with the famous windows of Chartres.
On the north side many of the former monastic buildings remain, with a fine late medieval cloister and a vast rectangular chapter house. The cathedral library also stands here, but was rebuilt after being destroyed by bombing in World War II; fortunately all the medieval glass in the cathedral had been removed for safe-keeping throughout the war and damage to the building was otherwise superficial.
Canterbury Cathedral put simply invites superlatives, one of the most rewarding churches anywhere and a magnificent testament to England's Christian heritage.

I have multiple myeloma and I am on my 4th chemo treatment. Weekly I take 13 Cyclophosphamide (chemo) pills and 10 dexamethasone (steroid) pills in addition to in-hospital Velcade chemo injections.
This is the 21st week I have received treatment so the pills are shaped into a 21.

The lower part of the building was constructed in 1925 and originally a garage. It was owned by Olof Asklund Bakery (the bakery was situated in the adjacent block).
The new building with apartments on top was constructed in the year 2000. It is a tenant-owners' society (named "Brf Kastellgatan 21") with 33 apartments in this building plus another building in the yard. There are now 11 parking spaces in the garage, all with charging stations for electric cars.
