Students in the fast-growing community of Langley will soon benefit from a 300-seat addition at Langley Secondary school to help meet current enrolment and future growth.

The new addition to the Ft. Sam Theatre will seat 600 people and features:
-state-of-the-art lighting and acoustics
-a dance studio with the same wood floor as the stage
-a performers' lounge
-an audio/video mixing and recording studio
-Army Entertainment command suite and administrative offices
-an outdoor projector for projecting images against the addition's upper wall
-receiving ramps for moving sets from trucks to theatre
-catwalks rigged to the ceiling for production personnel
-an 80-foot “fly house” pulley system for quick set changes
Designed and outfitted with the latest equipment and features based on a design by RKJ, Inc. subcontractor construction team. Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon and Williams Theater Consultants, the same company that designed the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio, contributed design concepts as well. Husband-and-wife theatre veterans Steve Smith and Nicole Coppinger brought their thespian background and insight to the project. The team proposed the theatre as the new home of the Army Soldier, and it will also play host to Operation Rising Star, USA Express, and concerts from touring music and entertainment stars.
Smith, technical director for the Army Soldier Show, has 20 years' experience in professional theatre and got his start working in Army Entertainment at Ft. Gordon. Coppinger, set designer for the Soldier Show, received her bachelor's degree in fine arts and has worked on Broadway in New York City. They worked with RKJ Construction, Inc., IMCOM Force Management Division and the Army Corps of Engineers to ensure that the new theatre would meet the standards necessary for a comprehensive training venue for budding artists and a Broadway-caliber theatre.
At the same time, all parties took great care to ensure that the front part of the original theatre, which contains the stage, main lobby, ticket box, original entrance and facade and VIP seating were restored to their authentic 1927 look. The carpet, paint, furniture, wood etching and silk banners hanging from the ceiling will all be restored or replicated as closely to the original as possible.
The project, which cost $18 million, started in early 2009 and will be completed in September 2011.

"Capitol Hill, in addition to being a metonym for the United States Congress, is the largest historic residential neighborhood in Washington, D.C., stretching easterly in front of the United States Capitol along wide avenues. It is one of the oldest residential neighborhoods in Washington, D.C., and, with roughly 35,000 people in just under 2 square miles (5 km2), it is also one of the most densely populated.
As a geographic feature, Capitol Hill rises near the center of the District of Columbia and extends eastward. Pierre (Peter) Charles L'Enfant, as he began to develop his plan for the new federal capital city in 1791, chose to locate the "Congress House" (the Capitol building) on the crest of the hill at a site that he characterized as a "pedestal waiting for a monument." The Capitol building has been the home of the Congress of the United States and the workplace of many residents of the Capitol Hill neighborhood since 1800.
The Capitol Hill neighborhood today straddles two quadrants of the city, Southeast and Northeast. A large portion of the neighborhood is now designated as the Capitol Hill Historic District.
The name Capitol Hill is often used to refer to both the historic district and to the larger neighborhood around it. To the east of Capitol Hill lies the Anacostia River, to the north is the H Street corridor, to the south are the Southeast/Southwest Freeway and the Washington Navy Yard, and to the west are the National Mall and the city's central business district.
The Capitol building is surrounded by the Capitol Hill Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The Capitol Hill Historic District was expanded in 2015 to the north to include the blocks bordered by 2nd Street, F Street, 4th Street, and just south of H Street, NE, collectively known as the Swampoodle Addition.
Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia, also known as just Washington or simply D.C., is the capital city and federal district of the United States. It is located on the east bank of the Potomac River, which forms its southwestern and southern border with the U.S. state of Virginia, and it shares a land border with the U.S. state of Maryland on its other sides. The city was named for George Washington, a Founding Father and the first president of the United States, and the federal district is named after Columbia, the female personification of the nation. As the seat of the U.S. federal government and several international organizations, the city is an important world political capital. It is one of the most visited cities in the U.S. with over 20 million annual visitors as of 2016.
The U.S. Constitution provides for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of Congress; the district is not a part of any U.S. state (nor is it one itself). The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of the capital district located along the Potomac River near the country's East Coast. The City of Washington was founded in 1791, and Congress held its first session there in 1800. In 1801, the territory, formerly part of Maryland and Virginia (including the settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria), officially became recognized as the federal district. In 1846, Congress returned the land originally ceded by Virginia, including the city of Alexandria; in 1871, it created a single municipal government for the remaining portion of the district. There have been efforts to make the city into a state since the 1880s, a movement that has gained momentum in recent years, and a statehood bill passed the House of Representatives in 2021.
The city is divided into quadrants centered on the Capitol, and there are as many as 131 neighborhoods. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 689,545, which makes it the 23rd most populous city in the U.S. as of 2020, the third most populous city in the Mid-Atlantic, and gives it a population larger than that of two U.S. states: Wyoming and Vermont. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's daytime population to more than one million during the workweek. Washington's metropolitan area, the country's sixth largest (including parts of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia), had a 2020 estimated population of 6.3 million residents; and over 54 million people live within 250 mi (400 km) of the District.
The three branches of the U.S. federal government are centered in the district: Congress (legislative), the president (executive), and the Supreme Court (judicial). Washington is home to many national monuments and museums, primarily situated on or around the National Mall. The city hosts 177 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of many international organizations, trade unions, non-profits, lobbying groups, and professional associations, including the World Bank Group, the International Monetary Fund, the Organization of American States, AARP, the National Geographic Society, the American Red Cross, and others.
A locally elected mayor and a 13-member council have governed the district since 1973. Congress maintains supreme authority over the city and may overturn local laws. The District of Columbia does not have representation in Congress, although D.C. residents elect a single at-large congressional delegate to the House of Representatives who has no vote. District voters choose three presidential electors in accordance with the Twenty-third Amendment to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1961." - info from Wikipedia.
The fall of 2022 I did my 3rd major cycling tour. I began my adventure in Montreal, Canada and finished in Savannah, GA. This tour took me through the oldest parts of Quebec and the 13 original US states. During this adventure I cycled 7,126 km over the course of 2.5 months and took more than 68,000 photos. As with my previous tours, a major focus was to photograph historic architecture.

So this morning we got ourselves a cat.
She is a 1 year old Selkirk Rex who needed re-homing, full pedigree.
She is settling in very well so far, exploring the house and investigating everything.
No doubt this will be the first of many photos of her!

Babak Tafreshi, an ESO Photo Ambassador, has captured a beautiful image of ESO’s Paranal Observatory illuminated by the sunset. The beautifully clear sky hints at the exceptional atmospheric conditions here; one major reason why ESO chose Paranal as the site of the Very Large Telescope (VLT), its flagship facility.The VLT — which can be seen on Cerro Paranal, the highest peak in the image, with an altitude of 2600 metres — is the world’s most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory. It consists of four Unit Telescopes, each with a primary mirror 8.2 metres across, and four 1.8-metre Auxiliary Telescope.. The VLT operates at visible and infrared wavelengths and among the pioneering observations carried out using the VLT have been the first direct image of an exoplanet (see eso0515) and the tracking of stars orbiting the Milky Way’s central black hole (see eso0846 and eso1151). Also on Cerro Paranal is the VLT Survey Telescope (VST). Its smaller enclosure can just be made out in front of one of the larger VLT Unit Telescope enclosures on the mountaintop. The VST is the most recent addition to Paranal, with the first images released in 2011 (see eso1119). It sports a primary mirror 2.6 metres across, which makes it the largest telescope in the world designed for surveying the sky in visible light.Another survey telescope at the Paranal Observatory is VISTA, the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy, which can be seen on another peak, in the foreground of Cerro Paranal. VISTA is the world’s largest survey telescope, with a 4.1-metre mirror, and operates at near-infrared wavelengths. The telescope started work in 2009 (see eso0949). Parish Church "Maria Hietzing"
In 1419, the church was consecrated to the title of "Mary's Birth."
The Hietzinger parish church in the core stems from the middle of the 13th century, the exterior of the chancel and nave is of late Gothic character. The western façade with the tower is a neo-Gothic addition from the 19th century.
Already around 1100 a small chapel of the German Knight's Order should have existed, which was consecrated to St. Birgitta or Brigitta. In 1253 a document confirms the transfer of the chapel to the monastery Klosterneuburg (Lower Austria). From 1414 to 1419, the church was enlarged and consecrated to the title "Mary's Birth". It suffered heavy damage in 1484 by the Hungarians; in 1529 it was burnt down by the Turks. This event is linked to a legend about the wonderful salvation of four Hietzingers (people). This raised the prestige of the church so much that "Maria Hietzing" soon became a popular pilgrimage site.
The most necessary repairs could be carried out in 1539. In 1587-93, the church was completely restored by master builder Jakob Vivian; already in 1590 the new consecration took place. Not later than from this period stems the slender, octagonal tower, which existed until the facade was altered in the 19th century, located was it at the northwest corner of the nave.
Its the roof overhanging part had three stories, two of which were furnished with windows, the lower one with key loopholes. The church due to frequent threats by warlike events may have been fortified. It was already destroyed again by the Hungarians in 1604/05. The reconstruction work resulted in a comprehensive change, especially in the Baroque interior design (1660). In 1683, the Turks devastated the house of God for the second time. The vault came down, and with the exception of the Baroque stucco and frescoes in the presbytery, the furnishings were destroyed.
After rebuilding, in 1690, under provost Christoph Matthaei, the chapel of Saint Leopold was built south of the nave.
As a result of the increased inflow of pilgrims, a chapel was also built on the north side of the church in 1735.
Due to the proximity of Schönbrunn, the church was visited by members of the imperial house in the 18th century. Numerous foundations and extensions bear witness to this. On 4 April 1786 Hietzing was raised to the status of a parish; before the church was considered a branch of Penzing (14th district of Vienna). In the mid-forties of the 19th century Father Joachim Haspinger, a combatant of Andreas Hofer, daily read the Mass.
The last major expansion followed 1860-64, the interior was enlarged and the façade with the tower erected.
The restoration of the interior of the church in 1953 got rid of the damages caused by the end of the Second World War. The three glass windows with colorful ornaments originate from the year 1955. A comprehensive facade renovation took place 1994/95. [...]
Pfarrkirche „Maria Hietzing“
1419 wurde die Kirche auf den Titel „Maria Geburt“ geweiht.
Die Hietzinger Pfarrkirche stammt im Kern aus der Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts, das Äußere von Chor und Langhaus hat spätgotischen Charakter. Die Westfassade mit dem Turm ist ein neugotischer Anbau aus dem 19. Jahrhundert.
Schon um 1100 soll eine kleine Kapelle des Deutschen Ritterordens bestanden haben, die der hl. Birgitta oder Brigitta geweiht war. 1253 bestätigt eine Urkunde die Übergabe der Kapelle an das Stift Klosterneuburg. 1414 bis 1419 wurde die Kirche vergrößert und auf den Titel „Maria Geburt“ geweiht. Sie erlitt 1484 durch die Ungarn schweren Schaden; 1529 brannten sie die Türken nieder. An dieses Ereignis knüpft eine Legende über die wunderbare Errettung von vier Hietzingern. Dies hob das Ansehen der Kirche so stark, dass „Maria Hietzing” bald eine beliebte Wallfahrtsstätte wurde.
Die notwendigsten Reperaturen konnten 1539 durchgeführt werden, 1587–93 wurde die Kirche durch Baumeister Jakob Vivian völlig wiederhergestellt; bereits 1590 erfolgte die Neueinweihung. Spätenstens aus dieser Zeit stammt der bis zur Fassadenveränderung im 19. Jahrhundert bestehende schlanke, achteckige Turm an der nordwestlichen Ecke des Langhauses.
Sein das Dachgesims überragender Teil wies drei Geschoße auf, von denen die beiden oberen mit Fenstern, das untere mit Schlüsselschießscharten ausgestattet war. Die Kirche dürte infolge der oftmaligen Bedrohungen durch kriegerische Ereignisse befestigt gewesen sein. Bereits 1604/05 wurde sie durch die Ungarn erneut zerstört. Die Wiederaufbauarbeiten führten zu umfassenden Veränderungen, besonders zur barocken Ausgestaltung des Innenraumes (1660). 1683 verwüsteten die Türken das Gotteshaus zum zweiten Mal. Das Gewölbe stürzte ein, und mit Ausnahme der barocken Stukkatur und der Fresken im Presbyterium wurde die Einrichtung vernichtet.
Nach dem Wiederaufbau erfolgte 1690 unter Protest Christoph Matthaei der Anbau der Leopoldskapelle südlich des Langhauses.
Infolge des verstärkten Wallfahrerzustromes wurde 1735 auch an der Nordseite eine Kapelle angebaut.
Durch die Nähe von Schönbrunn wurde die Kirche im 18. Jahrhundert von Mitgliedern des kaiserlichen Hauses gerne besucht. Zahlreiche Stiftungen und Erweiterungen geben davon Zeugnis. Am 4. 4. 1786 wurde Hietzing zur Pfarre erhoben; vorher galt die Kirche als Filiale von Penzing. Mitte der vierziger Jahre des 19. Jahrhunderts las hier Pater Joachim Haspinger, eine Kampfgefährte Andreas Hofers, täglich die hl. Messe.
Die letzte große Erweiterung erfolgte 1860–64 der Innenraum wurde vergrößert und die Fassade mit dem Turm errichtet.
Die Restaurierung des Kircheninneren 1953 beseitigte die gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges verursachten Beschädigungen. Die drei Glasfenster mit bunten Ornamenten stammen aus dem Jahr 1955. Eine umfassende Fassadenrenovierung erfolgte 1994/95. [...]

A recent addition to the Stanley Park Rose Garden. Very healthy Dark Desire™ Parfuma® has velvety black buds which turn to extraordinary deep purple/red blooms that are rimmed with nearly black petals. The high centered buds open to very fragrant, large and full romantic flowers. Grows to be a 4' - 5' tall plant with semi-glossy dark green foliage. This rose can grow in many different conditions including the very hot and dry south. Introduced by Kordes in 2013. In 2014 Dark Desire™ Parfuma® was the recipient of the destignished ADR award. Propagated on hardy Rosa Multiflora rootstock.
