The Hooded Merganser:
Spotted this Female Hooded Merganser Strutting Her Stuff after finishing a breakfast of Frog Legs alfresco. The legs were still attached to the frog, so it took her awhile to dine, but she seems to have had a Happy Ending : )
Hooded Mergansers are fairly common on small ponds and rivers, where they dive for fish, crayfish, and other food, seizing it in their thin, serrated bills. They find their prey underwater by sight. They can actually change the refractive properties of their eyes to improve their underwater vision. In addition, they have an extra eyelid, called a “nictitating membrane,” which is transparent and helps protect the eye during swimming, like a pair of goggles.
Hooded Merganser ducklings leave their nest cavity within 24 hours of hatching. First, their mother checks the area around the nest and calls to the nestlings from ground level. From inside the nest, the little fluffballs scramble up to the entrance hole and then flutter to the ground, which may be 50 feet or more below them. In some cases, they have to walk half a mile or more with their mother to the nearest body of water.
The oldest recorded Hooded Merganser was a male and at least 14 years, 6 months old when he was shot in Mississippi in 2009. He had been banded in Minnesota in 1995.

Joy is a marvelous increasing of what exists, a pure addition out of nothingness.

The Cathedral of Palermo is one of the most characteristic monuments of the city: visiting it is like leafing through a history book of Sicily.
It is the main place of worship in the city of Palermo and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Its highly original mix of styles, with elements of Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman, Catalan and Gothic art, is a direct consequence of the presence of multiple populations that, over the centuries, have alternated on Sicilian soil.
The style of the twelfth century prevails over all, the Norman one, although the appearance of the church as we see it today is due to modifications and additions from the eighteenth century.
A highly suggestive experience is the visit of the roofs of the Cathedral, thanks to which it is possible to discover the artistic and architectural elements of the external walls of the monument and admire Palermo from above.
we purchased this beautiful Hellebore at the spring garden show... for now it will staying inside for a week or so... then I'll plant it with the others in the garden.
A little break from frisky wild horses, which I was watching at the time, this Bald Eagle sails down river. It was one of the nesting pair I saw way upstream a few days before, and a grand finale addition to my last morning in the area.
Covid19 Diary April 24, 2020. I have lost count of the quarantine days. I have lost count of the time that passes. I can only photograph what I can, I can only see what I am allowed. The imagination spreads over what I see, as in this shot where in addition to the wonder of Nature I see two clouds that seem to form two hands that seem to want to tell me something that something that the mood conveys: Pray!
A red Abutilon, aka Chinese lantern, was missing in our garden. A friend did some propagation in our absence and... voila :) !

The original owners of Italianate homes would often have been third or fourth generation Canadians, probably descended from United Empire Loyalists. The Loyalists were refugees. They left the newly formed United States because they disagreed with fundamental policies of the new republic, one of them being slavery. Many of the Loyalists left beautiful properties, large homes and good lives with only the belongings they could fit on their backs or in a wagon. They would have been pleased to see their descendants living in comfort. In addition, they would have been happy to see that their descendants had maintained the same moral principles that forced their own migration.70
CSXT L004 (old B724) has been on duty more than four hours and is just now starting north. They are technically still inside the Framingham Yard limits as they trundle northbound on the Fitchburg Branch at about MP QBU35.6. The entirety of the branch is designated as Other Than Main Track with this local operating at Restricted Speed but not exceeding 10 MPH the whole way making for an agonizingly long round trip. The two GP40-2s are snaking through the weedy trackage on the causeway over the Foss Reservoir/Sudbury River with a big train of nearly 30 cars.
This trackage dates from 1855 when the Agricultural Branch Railroad opened between Framingham and Northborough. In July 1866, the railroad opened a 14-mile extension to a connection with the Fitchburg and Worcester Railroad at Pratts Junction in Sterling. The next dozen years were rather convoluted as many small independent lines began to congeal into larger systems and by 1879 the route was part of the Old Colony Railroad, then ultimately the New York, New Haven, & Hartford in 1893.
This line, like its sister route to Lowell was one of only three incursions of the NH north of the defacto "Mason Dixon Line" of New England Railroading into Boston and Maine territory. For virtually a century, with few exceptions, the NH ruled CT and RI and everything in MA south of New York Central's Boston & Albany subsidiary that ran in a virtual straight line between its namesake cities bifurcating New England.
Today this 30 mile route meandering northwest is the last CSXT owned branchline in Massachusetts, with all the rest of any length that they still operate having been sold to MassDOT. The branch seems to have a solid future thanks to the addition of a busy new demolition debris customer near the end of the line in Leominster supplementing stalwarts like Ken's Foods, Nucor, and Bestway Lumber.

A great addition to your outside decor for a more realistic scenery, this was added to the outside of a cabin. Very realistic! Also great Poses.

The latest addition to my Viet Nam set.
I shot this on a previous trip to Vietnam, and I took it from the 9th floor of the Saigon Saigon bar of the Caravelle Hotel.
This was a period when I was not carrying my tripod (I've since learned) and so I boosted the ISO to 1600 and shot, handheld, 3 exposures.
There was a fair bit of noise unfortunately (one of the reasons to consider the new Nikon D300?) but I thought the colours justified the post - I hope you agree.
"A partir d'une figure simple et par la juxtaposition de cette même figure dans les différentes dimensions de l'espace euclidien, on arrive à créer un type de labyrinthe d'une grande complexité spatiale et dont le parcours laisse diverses alternatives: vers la droite et la gauche, vers le haut et le bas."

These beauties were a regular visitor to our garden for many years, seemingly always in pairs.
In recent years numbers have declined dramatically. Fortunately in Scotland they are still a common bird.

Many thanks as always to those kind enough to comment and fave my photos or even to drop by for a quick peek. It is very much appreciated.

In addition to the Yellow-rumped Warblers, we saw a lot of Cedar Waxwings eating the Cedar berries. In fact that is where part of their name comes from. From allaboutbirds.org: "The birds’ name derives from their appetite for cedar berries in winter." The bird pictured here is an immature bird as evident by the prominent streaking on the breast and faint looking black mask as compared to an adult. Anoka County, MN 10/04/20
A quick watercolour sketch created while enjoying a cuppa at Markeaton Park recently, there's a bit of artistic licence at play here, with the addition of a flower bed in the foreground.
In addition to memorable sunrises at Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, the moments as the sun sets are also quite amazing. Just after the sun has dropped below the horizon the soft light illuminates the West and East Mitten Buttes and also Merrick Butte.

An absolutely mega slide...
A new addition to the (reducing in size) collection I received today: Class 24 no.5114 seen entering Invergordon on 10/08/72 with the 10:50 Inverness-Wick and Thurso, a shot taken around 3 weeks after I'd been born... And I'd say the slide has survived the years the better of the two of us !
The 24 had around 2 months left in traffic before withdrawal.

In addition to memorable sunrises at Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, the moments just before the sun sets are also quite amazing. Just as the sun is dropping below the horizon the last light illuminates ONLY what rises above the valley floor. This image captures the golden light on the West and East Mitten Buttes and also Merrick Butte. Just a few of the foreground brush and rocks are high enough to catch the last light.

You've probably seen this before in the comments for one of my other photos, but it's taken its place on my photostream now. To be honest, I only uploaded due to this description. I didn't want to just upload some text. Granted, I could delete it, but I've been meaning to upload this photo for a while now...
If you've noticed, I haven't been posting as much as I do regularly. This weekend I was overwhelmed with busyness. I did find time to think about it though. I came to the conclusion that I should take a short break for this month. Invest a lot of time in my studies and really hanging with my family. And baking and making stuff for people. All of that is very time consuming, ha. So I think I should take a break from my little world of photos.
Another thing is that I've completely run out of ideas. I'm not really good at taking pictures of moments and pretty little things. I would rather leave that to people who have special eye for those things. I do have one more idea, but I'm probably going to save it for the day before Christmas or something.
Since I'm taking a break so I can focus better on, well, you know, "life", I probably won't be on flickr nearly as much. I'll still be around to comment and favorite photos here and there.
I love you, guys! :D! And I will miss you all so very much <3
EDIT:
GEEZ. Another out of focus portrait. What is up with that? xD
In addition to the original MOC, I've prepared some close-ups of the techniques I used to build the jungle.
I hope you will find them useful, or at least interesting. Feel free to ask for more detail. :)
In addition to finally getting some sun, I think I finally got a decent roll! Despite being a little warry about using Rodinal with Fortepan 100, these turned out wonderfully. With excellent contrast, tonality, and edge sharpness. Yes, some visible grain, but it isn't detracting from the overall look of the images.
The full review drops in February 2023!

I like having multiple methods to photograph people with, because it stops me from getting bored of one format, and if I fail in one I usually succeed in another. On this occasion, pretty much all of my double exposures were subpar. Shooting with no shade on a Spring day with color film didn't help. I sort of stacked the deck against myself. But normal color portraits? Easy. Flowers were everywhere, Sarah is immensely photogenic; mix the two and you've got everything you ever wanted out of photography. It's always good to have options, but best to have a gorgeous model.
