Medieval city gate Grendelpoort (Est. 1335).
.
The "Grendelpoort" (Est. 1335), national monument and one of the three original city gates of Valkenburg as part of the medieval defenses. The gate and defenses were built of marlstone, a commonly used stone extracted from the various quarries. What used to be more of a ruin, it now has a portcullis again since 2010 and in 2014 the gate, together with the Geulpoort including towers, was completely restored.
The Grendelpoort city gate was built around 1335, initially with the name Bergerpoort, Maastrichtse Poort or Trichterpoort, after the places where the road led through the gate. On the outside of the gate was a well, the Grendelput after which the gate is now named.
On September 25 in 2010 the year in which the "Valkenburg Schutterij" existed for 550 years, the life-size bronze statue with the name "Sjotter aan de Poort" was unveiled. The statue of the "Sjötter" is dressed in the uniform "der Oude en Jonge Nobele" for which a member of these civic guards has served as a model.
Trivia: On September 24, 1901, the first fatal car accident in the Netherlands took place. At the foot of the Valkenburg Cauberg, a car whose brakes no longer worked collided with the medieval Grendelpoort.

The Atelier Hof 3, a very nice decorated atelier, lots of pottery products and all unique. An excellent gift shop.
---
Dordrecht - From the historic location of the 'Hof van Nederland' you can walk straight into the narrow Hof alley. Also an old alley with a former fire brigade house (Brandspuithuisje) at number 3. From this house the fire guards (klapwakers) once walked their rounds at night to see if there was a fire.
Today, the small art studio "Atelier Hof 3" is located at this address. The thick wooden doors are open, inviting people to enter the pottery workshop. It's a perfect art gallery to browse through the ceramics in the shop. Inside there is a purely traditional atmosphere, numerous unique handmade ceramic creations let the eye and visitor wander through the store. It's also where the very kind potter often can be seen at work. Behind the shop is a small courtyard, perhaps the smallest courtyard in Dordrecht, which is beautifully decorated with many forms of ceramics. Try to spot the ceramic Dragon, it guards the heat of the shop chimney.

Terracotta Army - L'Armée Terracotta
Exhibition "L'armée Terracotta - l'héritage de l'empereur chinois éternel". It shows items part of one of the greatest discoveries of the last century, the terracotta army discovered in 1974, dated about 2,200 years ago, then ancient China of the first Chinese emperor.
The 8,000 terracotta soldiers were a burial gift for Emperor Qin Shi Huang Di (259 -210 BC). The archaeological site, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, encompasses a stunning 98 square kilometers (38 square miles). As many as 700,000 conscripted workers have worked on the project to recreate the army of the Chinese emperor in terracotta, that is more than have worked on the pyramid of Cheops. Some time after the burial the collection was destroyed and weapons stolen by a rival emperor. The exhibition shows realistic replicas and unfortunately not the originals because they are too fragile to transport.

War Memorial Hartebrugkerk (Est. 1949, ceramics, artist Jules Rummens). The war memorial in the portal of the Hartebrugkerk is a memorial in the Dutch city of Leiden, commemorating the Second World War.
The Hartebrugkerk is a 19th-century church in Leiden. During the war, the bronze church bells were confiscated and melted down by the German occupiers. In May 1949, a ceramic relief was placed in the bow drum above the entrance of the church to commemorate this event and other acts of war. It depicts Christ between the soldiers and suffering civilians.
In many countries, the church bells (important symbols of faith, hope and peace) and numerous other bronze, silver and gold historical and art objects were confiscated by the Germans, stolen or robbed and then melted down for use in the German war industry. Often reissued as rewards for further death, destruction and war crimes of unprecedented German brutality in military, political and civilian misdeeds. German decorations were issued in bronze, silver, gold and gold with diamonds.

Dreaming of Jean de La Fontaine. Wall decoration reminiscent of the stories and drawings of the fabulist and poet Jean de La Fontaine, one of the literature and arts guests at the nearby château Vaux-le-Vicomte. From the time of the playwright Molière, they were among the artists close to Fouquet. This presentation, with the paintings on canvas in the hallway among huge artistic mirrors must have been stunning to see in brandnew state and years after, nowadays it shows signs of the passed history and maybe it should be renovated to restore it into it's full former glory just like I tried with this photographic version. Anyways, a nice thought for a good night dream.

Puerto Dorado village overrun by pirates in search of treasure. The first sight is the town square, where some pirates have kidnapped the mayor, Carlos, and threaten to drown him in a well if he doesn't divulge the location of the treasure. Carlos' wife tells him to be brave and not talk; she is shot at as Carlos is repeatedly dunked in the water while several other captive city officials look on. Captain Jack Sparrow is seen hiding behind some dresses. An auction scene follows, where a pirate auctions off loot from the townspeople to other pirates. A redheaded female pirate is more interested in the town's rum supply, as are the bidders, who ignore the chickens that are currently offered for bidding.
In a next scene, pirates run around chasing women holding trays of food, and two foolish buccaneers who have stolen snacks are chased by an angry woman holding a rolling pin. Just beyond is the "Pooped Pirate" drunkenly waving a map and key to a treasure vault, boasting that Captain Jack Sparrow will never see it. Jack is hiding in a barrel just behind him, popping out and getting a good look at the map over the pirate's shoulder. Off to the side, a pirate by the name of "Old Bill" wants to share rum with a group of terrified alley cats.
Carefree, tipsy pirates succeed in ravaging the town and setting it aflame, filling the night air with an orange glow.

Pirates Of The Caribbean - open since april 12, 1992. A 10:30 minute long dark boatride through a fortress and harbour village with lots of animated pirate scenes.
Opening on March 18, 1967, the Disneyland version of Pirates of the Caribbean was the last attraction that Walt Disney himself participated in designing, debuting three months after his death. The ride gave rise to the song "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)" written by George Bruns and Xavier Atencio. The song became the basis for the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, which debuted in 2003. Since 2006, Disney has incorporated characters from the film series into the various versions of the rides.

A French type of Good evening, With the sun behind the horizon heavy shadows seem to disappear. Without the heat of the day it's easy to enjoy the city even more, Lots of people go for a walk, other people eating and bulbs of light fills the streets. It's a city in a total different dimension to enjoy.

Sarlat-la-Caneda - One of the most prominent villages in the Dordogne region is Sarlat-la-Canéda. A very popular destination in the Périgord Noir, maybe because modern history has largely passed it by. Sarlat has remained preserved and one of the towns most representative of 14th century France. The old centre consists of impeccably restored stone buildings, with 77 protected monuments it's on France's tentative list for future nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Largely car-free with lots of narrow ancient streets and small stores, an absolute pleasure to walk through and to discover.

Flying Dutchman Golden Age harbor.
.
The design and architecture of the Flying Dutchman attraction is breathtakingly beautiful. The atmosphere of a VOC harbor from the Golden Age has been incorporated in the building in so many details and features in an original way. More than a hundred different ornaments in this attraction have been designed and produced by Efteling, some in large numbers. A very beautiful version of the saga of "The Flying Dutchman", in person Willem van der Decken, captain of the VOC ship "The Lands Ship of War Delft" from 1783.

His legs show his adventures with small jerks, his beak shows little movements. From time to time he twists to get even deeper into his blanket, he is really at home.
