Ramtower ship De Buffel (Est. 1896) - a heavily armored ram ship in service of the Royal Navy until 1973 as "Hr.Ms. Buffel" or "Hr.Ms. Buffel" (NATO number A 884). Built in 1868 at the Napier & Sons shipyard of Glasgow. The first ship of the Royal Navy without sails, a large armored 2.198 ton ram ship with a steam engine and two propellers. Equipped with an armament of a heavy ram on the bow, several guns and operated by a crew of 150 men. The ships role was to defend the Dutch coast and later used as an accommodation ship. Nowadays it's a museum ship "Ramtoren schip Buffel" in Hellevoetsluis. Almost symbolically anchored in the "Maritime Quarter" of the "Fortresse Holland" museum in Hellevoetsluis. In a harbor area with various other historical ships and nearby structures all securely anchored in Dutch history for future generations. Capture of Brielle - Procession

April 1st, 1572 - the capture of Brielle by the Watergeuzen. A turning point in the uprising of the Low Countries against Spain in the Eighty Years' War. Militarily the success was minor as the port of Brielle was poorly defended by the Spanish, but it provided the first foothold on land for the rebels at a time when the rebellion was all but crushed, and it offered the sign for a new revolt throughout the Netherlands which led to the formation of the Dutch Republic.

The Watergeuzen were led by William van der Marck, Lord of Lumey, and by two of his captains, Willem Bloys van Treslong and Lenaert Jansz de Graeff. After they were expelled from England by Elizabeth I, they needed a place to shelter their 25 ships. As they sailed towards Brielle, they were surprised to find out that the Spanish garrison led by the Spanish "Iron" Duke of Alva protagonists was poorly defended. On the evening of April 1 in 1572, the 600 men sacked the port, rammed the city gates, defeated the Spanish soldiers and liberated Brielle as the first Dutch city in the Netherlands from de Spanish .

Nowadays a very popular annual UNESCO event with lots of Watergeuzen, Spanish soldiers and medieval dressed people in a city center all dressed up just like then on that historical day.

Sprookjesbeelden aan Zee (Fairy Tale Sculptures by the Sea) - a free sculpture terrace on the boulevard of Scheveningen. The sympathetic sculptures by the American sculptor Tom Otterness are part of "Museum Beelden aan Zee" behind it. The more than twenty works of art depict various fairy tales, such as those of Gulliver, Hansel and Gretel, Tin Soldier, Moby Dick, Pinocchio and Hans Brinker.

Most striking is the gigantic Haringeter that has become the icon of the new Scheveningen boulevard. In total, the sculpture terrace comprises three large and twenty smaller bronze works of art with a skin of shiny patina, playfully placed on the boulevard, on islands and banisters. For photographers the glossy sculptures are a popular subject, not easy to isolate from the wandering crowds on this boulevard, but especially to capture these sculptures with some nice contrasting clouds or a sunset in the background.

Einde van een prachtige herfstdag met een zonsondergang aan het brede water. Wolken verschijnen voor wat neerslag in de nacht.

Dreaming of Jean de La Fontaine. Wall decoration reminiscent of the stories and drawings of the fabulist and poet Jean de La Fontaine, one of the literature and arts guests at the nearby château Vaux-le-Vicomte. From the time of the playwright Molière, they were among the artists close to Fouquet. This presentation, with the paintings on canvas in the hallway among huge artistic mirrors must have been stunning to see in brandnew state and years after, nowadays it shows signs of the passed history and maybe it should be renovated to restore it into it's full former glory just like I tried with this photographic version. Anyways, a nice thought for a good night dream.

Memories of Amélie in our garden, she enjoys to sit in the porch of the greenhouse, surrounded by plants and flowers and birds above her head. It's a repeating activity to capture these moments, in time to support our memory for years to come.

Goedereede - a small town that received city rights in 1312 from Sir Gereart van Voorne. The future Pope Adrian VI was at one time pastor of the parish church of Goedereede. A great fire in 1482 destroyed the old "Katharina Church" and a new church was erected in 1512 but only a huge tower still stands today with large bells from 1519 and 1647 and a recent a carillon. Although at first unlit, the tower served as a landmark and from 1552 as a lighthouse to help ships navigate until 1912. Today a national monument, recently restored and museum

Medieval city gate Grendelpoort (Est. 1335).

.

The "Grendelpoort" (Est. 1335), national monument and one of the three original city gates of Valkenburg as part of the medieval defenses. The gate and defenses were built of marlstone, a commonly used stone extracted from the various quarries. What used to be more of a ruin, it now has a portcullis again since 2010 and in 2014 the gate, together with the Geulpoort including towers, was completely restored.

The Grendelpoort city gate was built around 1335, initially with the name Bergerpoort, Maastrichtse Poort or Trichterpoort, after the places where the road led through the gate. On the outside of the gate was a well, the Grendelput after which the gate is now named.

On September 25 in 2010 the year in which the "Valkenburg Schutterij" existed for 550 years, the life-size bronze statue with the name "Sjotter aan de Poort" was unveiled. The statue of the "Sjötter" is dressed in the uniform "der Oude en Jonge Nobele" for which a member of these civic guards has served as a model.

Trivia: On September 24, 1901, the first fatal car accident in the Netherlands took place. At the foot of the Valkenburg Cauberg, a car whose brakes no longer worked collided with the medieval Grendelpoort.

Ceiling of the 12th century "Lanterne des Morts" (Lantern of the Dead) tower. It's linked in history to the abbot Bernard of Clairvaux who playes a major role in the second cruisade and build in 1147 by the Knights Templar. Standing inside it feels like a space still wayback in late medieval history.

It consists of two rooms, though the upper room above the ceiling has no entrance...

Sarlat-la-Canéda - One of the most prominent villages in the Dordogne region is Sarlat-la-Canéda. A very popular destination in the Périgord Noir, maybe because modern history has largely passed it by. Sarlat has remained preserved and one of the towns most representative of 14th century France. The old centre consists of impeccably restored stone buildings, with 77 protected monuments it's on France's tentative list for future nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Largely car-free with lots of narrow ancient streets and small stores, an absolute pleasure to walk through and to discover.

Chinese Terracotta army warriors.

Endless variations of a selection of the 8.000 terracotta warrior statues wearing different kinds of armour and clothing. They vary in height, uniform, and hairstyle in accordance with rank. It shows so many details and they also used to be painted too, even the weapons were included. This burial gift must have been very impressive, in creation, presentation and sure is in Chinese history.

Terracotta Army - L'Armée Terracotta

Exhibition "L'armée Terracotta - l'héritage de l'empereur chinois éternel". It shows items part of one of the greatest discoveries of the last century, the terracotta army discovered in 1974, dated about 2,200 years ago, then ancient China of the first Chinese emperor.

The 8,000 terracotta soldiers were a burial gift for Emperor Qin Shi Huang Di (259 -210 BC). The archaeological site, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, encompasses a stunning 98 square kilometers (38 square miles). As many as 700,000 conscripted workers have worked on the project to recreate the army of the Chinese emperor in terracotta, that is more than have worked on the pyramid of Cheops. Some time after the burial the collection was destroyed and weapons stolen by a rival emperor. The exhibition shows realistic replicas and unfortunately not the originals because they are too fragile to transport.
