Metasequoia glyptostroboides, one of the very special plant species at Strypemonde.
---
Metasequoia glyptostroboides - the dawn redwood, a fast-growing, endangered deciduous conifer, the sole living species of the genus Metasequoia, one of three species in the subfamily Sequoioideae. It is a particularly well-known example of a living fossil species. The tree faces considerable risks of extinction in its wild range due to deforestation, however it has been planted extensively in arboreta worldwide. If the species had not been discovered in 1941 but a bit later, it might have become extinct before being investigated.

Rockanje: Strypemonde Nature
A nice walk on this 100-hectare Strypemonde estate leads you through a beautiful varied forest and past a flowery forest meadow and many special trees, such as the Metasequoia Glyptostroboides and exotic oaks. The former owners of the then 2000 hectare estate were shipowners, they brought many cuttings and seeds from abroad and they still grow here. The area is also rich in tawny owls, long-eared owls and woodpeckers and you will find many mushrooms in the autumn.
The name Strypemonde comes from a wide creek, the Strype, which flowed into the sea here in the Middle Ages and which was later dammed. The hunting lodges Olaertsduin and Strypemonde (anno 1930) are national monuments and the Schaapskooy is a municipal monument.

Tom Thumb stealing the Seven-league boots of the Ogre. Tom Thumb in the Efteling is based on one of the eight fairytales published by Charles Perrault "Le petit Poucet" in "Histoires ou contes du temps passé" in 1697. The scene, designed as "Klein Duimpje", is since 1998 in the Fairytale Forest. Tom Thumb is stealing the Seven-league boots of the sleeping ogre. To call Tom Thumb, you have to call his name in a hole of a wooden log.
Seven-league boots are an element in European folklore. The boots allow the person wearing them to take strides of seven leagues per step, resulting in great speed..

Ever been to a Roman Amphitheater?.
.
Everyone knows the Flavian Amphitheater (Amphitheater Flavium), better known as the Colosseum, built in the 1st century AD. in Rome, it was the largest amphitheater in the Roman Empire and is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It is almost unreal to see a nice smaller replica of such a Roman theater here in this park.
Huge Roman shields adorn the large arena which is now used as a theatre. It is strongly reminiscent of a Roman Amphitheater as it was designed and built. Realize that the facade seen from the outside is three times as high and 10 times as impressive for a child. A small Roman guard post outside supervises this structure, entirely in the same Roman style and also at a great height.

Sprookjesbeelden aan Zee (Fairy Tale Sculptures by the Sea) - a free sculpture terrace on the boulevard of Scheveningen. The sympathetic sculptures by the American sculptor Tom Otterness are part of "Museum Beelden aan Zee" behind it. The more than twenty works of art depict various fairy tales, such as those of Gulliver, Hansel and Gretel, Tin Soldier, Moby Dick, Pinocchio and Hans Brinker.
Most striking is the gigantic Haringeter that has become the icon of the new Scheveningen boulevard. In total, the sculpture terrace comprises three large and twenty smaller bronze works of art with a skin of shiny patina, playfully placed on the boulevard, on islands and banisters. For photographers the glossy sculptures are a popular subject, not easy to isolate from the wandering crowds on this boulevard, but especially to capture these sculptures with some nice contrasting clouds or a sunset in the background.

Hellevoetsluis - During the time of the United Provinces Hellevoetsluis was the naval port of the Admiralty of de Maze (Rotterdam) and could accommodate an entire fleet within a special land-enclosed fortress with harbour and dockyard facilities, accessible through a canal. Thanks to its strategic situation the town grew from the beginning of the 17th century to be the homeport for the Dutch war fleet. In later years the port was fortified more and more and Hellevoetsluis therefore became a unique combination of fortified town and naval port. The Admirals Maarten Tromp, Michiel de Ruyter and Piet Heyn had their home base here and in 1688 during the Glorious Revolution William III of Orange's invasion fleet departed from the port.

The impressive facade of the almost 500 year old Grote Kerk of Breda. The 97 meter high tower seems to reach infinitely far into the night darkness. The church is still in use, faith and religion still bring light into the darkness here.
Quote: September 25, 2021 - the Dutch people were permitted again to share hope, faith, love and trust at -less- than 1.5 meters after months of isolation. The churches were crowded then..

Breda: Architecture
The "Grote" or "Our Lady's Church" (Groundbreaking 1410 and completed in 1547) is Breda's most important monument and landmark of Breda. The tower of the church, visible from a distance at 97 meters high, can be climbed on some days. The church is located in the center of Breda on the Grote Markt.
It is a cross basilica in the Brabant Gothic style, which has been restored several times over time. Also of national significance because of the Prinsenkapel, the mausoleum of the early ancestors of the Dutch royal family, the Nassau-Dillenburg family.
Both because of its construction and its location, the church is considered one of the most beautiful in the Netherlands. As an example of Brabant Gothic, the most intact and elegant in the Netherlands.

Steam engines - very impressive!. Many historic steam engines, impressive, large and hissing, and beautifully lit in the evening. Not only were they parked somewhere but they also drove around the old city center which got a lot of attention from the public. The sound of the steam whistles has long been the typical sound for another summer edition of the Vestingdagen event.

Small houses below the ridge of the steep mountain cliff.
.
The "Abri de Laugerie Basse", today it consists of a number of inhabited terraced houses under the overhanging rock face. It's also an important Upper Paleolithic archaeological site known for several works of art from the Magdalenian era. This shelter was inhabited by prehistoric man from about 14,000 BC in the Middle Magdalenian era.
Excavations of the site revealed about 600 art objects from the Magdalenian era. Among that the first Paleolithic sculptural representation of a woman discovered in modern times named "Immodest Venus" (French: Vénus impudique) which gave its name to the genre of paleolithic Venus figurines.
