Fortifications - during the time of the United Provinces Hellevoetsluis was the naval port of the Admiralty of de Maze (Rotterdam) and could accommodate an entire fleet within a special land-enclosed fortress with harbour and dockyard facilities, accessible through a canal. Thanks to its strategic situation the town grew from the beginning of the 17th century to be the homeport for the Dutch war fleet. In later years the port was fortified more and more and Hellevoetsluis therefore became a unique combination of fortified town and naval port.

The Admirals Maarten Tromp, Michiel de Ruyter and Piet Heyn had their home base here and in 1688 during the Glorious Revolution William III of Orange's invasion fleet departed from the port.

Met Pasen de ballonnenman op Lichtschip 12 de Noord Hinder - Hellevoetsluis/NL

A few chairs and a table. Worn out but every year still there. It's a common view in many French villages, people are used to take a seat outside in many months of the year.

It's one of those excellent places to sit and enjoy this medieval town. It looks a bit worn out but that's because of frequent use, a French custom. Imagine, just add a nice French coffee, a crispy Croissant and the local newspaper. It's one of those many healthy moments of peace in the outdoors.

Over the years, not much has really changed in this corner, at most the grape stump with fresh green leaves in early spring and to see how the grape bunches mature during the summer and autumn. Who wouldn't want to have their own terrace like this, and the time and opportunity to use it almost the whole year round.

Monpazier: Urban Photography

The small village Monpazier, a 13th-century bastide town, founded in 1285 and built by King Edward I of England for trade, commerce and justice. It almost didn't change in the past centuries, a medieval town square lined with an arched arcade, a 16th-century covered market, three of the original six rampared city gates remain and many other traces of medieval history. This picturesque small village is one of the "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France" villages, said to be one of the most atractive in southwest France.

The architect Louis Le Vau, the landscape architect André le Nôtre, and the painter-decorator Charles Le Brun worked together on this large-scale project. A group of five dolmens (D21, D22, D23, D24 and D25) located near the place Borger - Bronneger in the province of Drenthe. Dolmen D21 contained most of the archaeological finds dated to 3400 BC. It is also the most photogenic dolmen due to the huge beech tree. Also a short distance away are two burial mounds from the Bronze Age.

De Hondsrug ïn Borger - Hunebed (Dolmen) - a megalithic burial chamber from the Neolithic (4000-3000 BC) of the Trechterbeker (Funnelbeaker) culture. As a portal grave built from huge stones that were dragged along by the ice from southern Sweden and Finland during the Ice Age for about 150,000 years. There are 52 dolmens in Drenthe and two in Groningen and traces of dolmens have been found in at least thirty other places, but without the large stones. Originally there would have been at least 88 dolmens in the Netherlands.

UNESCO Geopark de Hondsrug - the only European Geopark in the Netherlands, a landscape with ridges and valleys that originated in the Ice Age about 150,000 years ago. Known for the various Dolmens from the Neolithic and burial mounds dating from the Bronze Age. In 2016, the Hondsrug was added to Unesco Geopark areas.

An attractive farm like house in a silent small village. In fact it's a winery with award winning wines and with a really nice story attached to it. Read the best-seller book "The Ripening Sun" by the self made vigneron Patricia Atkinson and read all about her life here in the Bergerac region, the village and all about producing wine. The full "terroir" of wine will come to life.

Gouda

Bookstore Smit, one of the many small shops in the center of Gouda. Often old buildings that stand side by side in many forms of architecture. That is exactly what makes the old city center so attractive, an area where modern, sleek architecture has not yet struck and the city still retains its history. Unfortunately, we don't read books that often anymore..

Catacombes de Paris - History

The Catacombs of Paris is the largest collection of underground cemeteries in the world, containing the bones of approximately six million Parisians in underground burial chambers and galleries.

Underground in Paris is a nearly 300 km long network of quarry tunnels used for the building blocks of many Parisian buildings and monuments such as Notre Dame. Because the Parisian cemeteries were overcrowded and very unclean, it was decided to close the cemeteries and move the bones to the underground passages.

It would take two years to empty the majority of Paris's cemeteries. Beginning from an opening ceremony on 7 April 1785 with nightly processions of black cloth-covered wagons carrying the millions of Parisian dead. The property itself was transformed into a sort of museum for all the headstones, sculptures and other artifacts recuperated from the former cemetery. The human remains were dumped into empty chambers and covered with a neatly stacked wall of skulls and bones. Plaques indicate which cemetery the bones come from. Until well into the 19th century, the Catacombs of Paris remained in use for the storage of bones.

Today, about half a million visit a 1.7 km section of the tunnels. It is a former quarry from the 15th century containing the graves of up to the 18th century. After a descent of 25 meters of stairs, a walk takes the visitor past one of the catacombs where the stacked bones and skulls lie, arranged by cemetery where the bones come from and the year they were deposited in the catacombs or by events in the Parisian history.
