Napoleon "Bouches de la Meuse" - on October 4, 1811, the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte visited Hellevoetsluis. The city of Hellevoetsluis was inspected as the most important naval city in Holland, and in particular the dry dock by architect Jan Blanken, also built in Hellevoetsluis. The dry dock was an architectural and technological tour de force and unique in its kind with steam-driven pumps from James Watt's company.
At the time, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769–1821) was emperor of France from 1804 to 1815, and Holland had already been incorporated into the French Empire since July 8, 1810. This was because Napoleon thought his brother was acting too independently and wanted to put an end to Dutch independence. During the French period from 1795 to 1813 in Holland, the French also introduced the use of French administrative and judicial organizations, among many other changes and improvements, most of which continued after the French period..

Chateau des Milandes - One of the most romantic castles has to be Château-des-Milandes (Est. 1489). It has to forms of defence like regular castles. In medieval history it was the former manor mainhouse of the lords of Coumont, owners of the nearby Chateau Castelnaud-la-Chapelle. The castle is renovated between 1900 and 1914, between 1940-1968 inhabited and owned by Josephine Baker. Nowadays it's a well preserved caste, a monument historique, jardin remarkable, with a brassery, bird of prey show and a unique museum and exhibition dedicated to Josephine Baker.

The Fluweelengrot Christmas Market in Valkenburg is one of the most popular Christmas markets in the Netherlands. Capture of Brielle - Procession
April 1st, 1572 - the capture of Brielle by the Watergeuzen. A turning point in the uprising of the Low Countries against Spain in the Eighty Years' War. Militarily the success was minor as the port of Brielle was poorly defended by the Spanish, but it provided the first foothold on land for the rebels at a time when the rebellion was all but crushed, and it offered the sign for a new revolt throughout the Netherlands which led to the formation of the Dutch Republic.
The Watergeuzen were led by William van der Marck, Lord of Lumey, and by two of his captains, Willem Bloys van Treslong and Lenaert Jansz de Graeff. After they were expelled from England by Elizabeth I, they needed a place to shelter their 25 ships. As they sailed towards Brielle, they were surprised to find out that the Spanish garrison led by the Spanish "Iron" Duke of Alva protagonists was poorly defended. On the evening of April 1 in 1572, the 600 men sacked the port, rammed the city gates, defeated the Spanish soldiers and liberated Brielle as the first Dutch city in the Netherlands from de Spanish .
Nowadays a very popular annual UNESCO event with lots of Watergeuzen, Spanish soldiers and medieval dressed people in a city center all dressed up just like then on that historical day.

Bronze plaque with four "schutters" of Valkenburg as they have looked over the centuries. It's placed at the entrance of the Grendelpoort, dating from 1329.
The 4 figures refer to four important schutters of Valkenburg. It shows from left to right: Thibalt van Valkenburg-Voeren, Walram de Rosse van Valkenburg-Monschau, Dirk van Pallandt and the last drossaard Lucas Willem van Yselmiden. At the top of this bronze plaque you see VALKEN ****, the 4 stars on the plaque refer to years of birth. At the bottom the letters RUBG, place these letters, and thus the figures with armor, in the correct time sequence you get the word VALKENBURG.

Sjötter aan de Poort - on September 25, 2010, the year in which the "Valkenburg Schutterij" existed for 550 years, the life-size bronze statue with the name "Sjotter aan de Poort" was unveiled. The image of the "Sjotter" is dressed in the uniform of a shooter "der Oude en Jonge Nobele" for which a member of the schutterij has served as a model.

Brielle: Capture of Brielle
April 1st, 1572 - the capture of Brielle by the Watergeuzen. A turning point in the uprising of the Low Countries against Spain in the Eighty Years' War. Militarily the success was minor as the port of Brielle was poorly defended by the Spanish, but it provided the first foothold on land for the rebels at a time when the rebellion was all but crushed, and it offered the sign for a new revolt throughout the Netherlands which led to the formation of the Dutch Republic.
The Watergeuzen were led by William van der Marck, Lord of Lumey, and by two of his captains, Willem Bloys van Treslong and Lenaert Jansz de Graeff. After they were expelled from England by Elizabeth I, they needed a place to shelter their 25 ships. As they sailed towards Brielle, they were surprised to find out that the Spanish garrison led by the Spanish "Iron" Duke of Alva protagonists was poorly defended. On the evening of April 1 in 1572, the 600 men sacked the port, rammed the city gates, defeated the Spanish soldiers and liberated Brielle as the first Dutch city in the Netherlands from de Spanish .
Nowadays a very popular annual UNESCO event with lots of Watergeuzen, Spanish soldiers and medieval dressed people in a city center all dressed up just like then on that historical day.
