Relaxed French business hours (Monpazier/France) - The little shops in Monpazier tend have a nice way of doing business, just like French shops elsewhere in France. Normal opening and closing hours but in a nice relaxed way of behavoir to customers. Be polite, and if you take the time to speak to them you'll have a very nice and friendly conversation. There's no rush, even when the shop owner has a shop who sells various types of clocks, showing time.

Hellevoetsluis: Lichtschip 12 Shipping

The Lichtschip 12 Noord Hinder (Est. 1963) is the last lightship built in the Netherlands and today it still is in it's original state. After many years of service in any weather at the North Sea along the Dutch coast it was decommissioned on March 21, 1994. Nowadays it's a museum ship maintained and run by commited volunteers in the "Fortresse Holland - Maritiem Kwartier" harbour "Het Groote Dok" in Hellevoetsluis. Visitors can take a good look in every section of the ship and for those who dare climb the high tower to enjoy the unique historical harbour view. It still sails to events elsewhere assisted by two strong tugs.

Some ship details - the Noord-Hinder is 45.4 meters long, 8.35 meters wide, draft 3.2 meters, displacement 510 tons and was equipped with a few small diesel engines. The light, in an 18-meter tower above sea level, had a range of 27 nautical miles. The light from the 4,200-watt lamp was amplified by a Fresnel lens and emitted 2 flares every 10 seconds. It was also equipped with a radar beacon and fog horn.

A grenade impact in the facade of the house at the "Fransche Molen" (Est. 1804) as a result of the liberation of Valkenburg in WW-II in September 1944. The large hole is still clearly visible, the soft marlstone may must have absorbed the impact that preserved the house. The fleeing Germans had severely damaged Valkenburg, blew up houses, buildings and bridges. Deep in this still visible deep scar from the Second World War is now a small statue of Saint Mary.

During WW-II, Valkenburg was like a German center with various headquarters of the feared units such as the SS and Wehrmacht. There was even a large elite boarding school for privileged boys and girls who were to lead the intended German Third Reich. As it turned out, it was a crual German occupier, instigator of WW-II with a legacy of persecution, mass murders by the millions, many war crimes and atrocities that are indelible in history.

Statues des Trois Oies - the Fois Gras Master Chefs, one of the most important culinairy symbols of this region.

.

Foie gras - French for "fat liver", is a specialty food product made of the liver of a duck or goose fattened by gavage (force feeding). A popular and well-known delicacy in French cuisine. Its flavor is described as rich, buttery, and delicate, unlike that of an ordinary duck or goose liver. Foie gras is sold whole, or is prepared into mousse, parfait, or pâté, and may also be served as an accompaniment to another food item, such as steak.

.

Gavage - the technique of gavage dates as far back as 2500 BC, when the ancient Egyptians began keeping birds for food and deliberately fattened the birds through force-feeding. Today, France is by far the largest producer and consumer of foie gras. Gavage-based foie gras production is controversial, due mainly to the animal welfare concerns about force-feeding, intensive housing and husbandry, and enlarging the liver to 10 times its usual volume.

Sarlat-la-Caneda - One of the most prominent villages in the Dordogne region is Sarlat-la-Canéda. A very popular destination in the Périgord Noir, maybe because modern history has largely passed it by. Sarlat has remained preserved and one of the towns most representative of 14th century France. The old centre consists of impeccably restored stone buildings, with 77 protected monuments it's on France's tentative list for future nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Largely car-free with lots of narrow ancient streets and small stores, an absolute pleasure to walk through and to discover.

Relaxing and curative power of mineral waters. The Thermes de Spa is a very nice facility to enjoy a relaxing Spa with inside and outside pools filled with water direct from the mineral springs.

Details

Thermes de Spa - in the 16th century, the commercialization of the thermal baths began and many spa guests came to Spa. The first bathing establishment was built in 1764 and the city became known as a health resort. A health resort (German: Kurort, English: spa) is a tourist resort that focuses on relaxation and recreation, but with a medical emotional value. A stay in a spa is considered beneficial for health due to medicinal springs, in this case the iron and carbonated water of the thermal baths of Spa, but also the healthy air. In Nivezé there are three springs of which the water is used for the thermal baths of Spa: Marie-Henriette spring, Tonnelet spring and Wellington spring. The term Spa has become a generic term for spa tourism in English and some other languages.

In 1764, the first bathing establishment was built in Spa and the city became known as a health resort, so in 1774 the second casino in Europe was also opened. In the second half of the 19th century, the thermal infrastructure was built as it still exists today. Among the many mainly affluent visitors, the international bourgeoisie, we see names such as Victor Hugo, Tsar Peter the Great, Alexandre Dumas and Giacomo Meyerbeer.

An autumn citywalk. Often old buildings that stand side by side in many forms of architecture. That is exactly what makes the old city center so attractive, an area where modern, sleek architecture has not yet struck and the city still retains its history.

Just near Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport, you'll find a Champs-Élysées like Outlet Shopping Center. It includes 110 exclusive top fashion and homeware boutiques.

Even the village like architecture, including the small bistro's, is exquisite and colorful indeed. The (price)tag #lavalleevillage could be the new trend for some time to come.

Roten Haus (Est +/-1760) owned by Johann Heinrich Scheibler. The Red House in Monschau, a patrician house from the 18th century. In the basement of this house, Spanish merino wool was washed and dyed using lime-free water. Spinning and weaving took place within the pre-industrial publishing system by homeworkers. In this way, the owner Johann Heinrich Scheibler of the Red House proudly told his jealous neighbors that he was "feeding 4,000 people through his factory alone.".

The Atelier Hof 3, a very nice decorated art gallery, lots of pottery products and all unique. An excellent gift shop.

---

Dordrecht - From the historic location of the 'Hof van Nederland' you can walk straight into the narrow Hof alley. Also an old alley with a former fire brigade house (Brandspuithuisje) at number 3. From this house the fire guards (klapwakers) once walked their rounds at night to see if there was a fire.

Today, the small art studio "Atelier Hof 3" is located at this address. The thick wooden doors are open, inviting people to enter the pottery workshop. It's a perfect art gallery to browse through the ceramics in the shop. Inside there is a purely traditional atmosphere, numerous unique handmade ceramic creations let the eye and visitor wander through the store. It's also where the very kind potter often can be seen at work. Behind the shop is a small courtyard, perhaps the smallest courtyard in Dordrecht, which is beautifully decorated with many forms of ceramics. Try to spot the ceramic Dragon, it guards the heat of the shop chimney.

Architecture that's build to withstand time. With grapevines above the pale blue colored doors, the nice shutters at each window, even the stones used to build the walls. It looks so very nice, fresh and friendly with an age back in history. Wouldn't we all be very proud and happy to be living in a house situated, decorated and designed like this? We like and will preserve it in time, I can't imagine it will be the same for our modern type of houses.

The small village Monpazier, a 13th-century bastide town, founded in 1285 and built by King Edward I of England for trade, commerce and justice. It almost didn't change in the past centuries, a medieval town square lined with an arched arcade, a 16th-century covered market, three of the original six rampared city gates remain and many other traces of medieval history. This picturesque small village is one of the "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France" villages, said to be one of the most atractive in southwest France.

Hellevoetsluis: Weather Photography

Het Kleine Strandje is a small but popular beach located in the Fortress of Hellevoetsluis. The beach is located on the Haringvliet and offers a beautiful view of the Hellevoetsluis lighthouse and the passing recreational sailing boats. The Kleine Strandje is an ideal place to relax, and also a popular place for swimming because the water is shallow, making it safe for children. The beach is equipped with some play equipment for children and a pirate ship. The moment of sunrise, but especially the sunset, is popular, which gives a special and always different view of the horizon.
