Today's Raven Muse - 528 Hz Emerald Heart Ascendance
Part of Bristol Light Festival 2024
A world premiere for Bristol Light Festival, Ascendance is a life-sized projection of an astronaut drifting through a cosmos of vibrant flowers, butterflies and wistful hallucinations. This interstellar installation is a serene space to sit and contemplate the fragility and fleeting nature of human existence, with a soundtrack composed by Spesh Maloney.
Davy & Kristin McGuire are multi-award-winning mixed reality artists, internationally renowned for their idiosyncratic experiments in digital projection, immersive art and storytelling. The pair wowed at Bristol Light Festival 2023 with their beautifully pensive works, Ophelia and Sirens, and have worked with luxury brands including Dior, Barneys and most recently, SAKS on 5th Avenue, New York City, for its renowned Christmas window installation for 2023.

A very remarkable building under construction on the edge of the Zuidas. As if it is crumbling in the middle. But it must actually represent a valley. That explains the name of the huge project.
Point of view: along the A10 (Spoorslag is the name of this path) and the football fields of AFC (Amsterdam Football Club) on the left.
Valley
De Valley is a residential and office tower under construction on the Zuidas in Amsterdam. The complex consists of three towers that occupy an entire plot of land on Beethovenstraat opposite the ABN Amro head office. The plot is wedged there between the sports fields of the Amsterdamsche Football Club and the A10 Zuid ring road.
The three towers, which will have a height of 100, 76 and 66 meters, will be connected by ascending terraces, in the idea of sawahs as are common in Asia.
Valley is realized by EDGE Technologies which is part of OVG Real Estate, was designed by architect Winy Maas of MVRDV. The green structure on the outside of the building was designed by Piet Oudolf. Construction is being carried out by the Valley Amsterdam combination consisting of Boele & van Eesteren and G&S Bouw. The complex is owned by RJB Groep.

Use: Homes, offices and facilities (catering, culture & retail)

Went to see "The Perfect Gallery" by Christian Jankowski at CUBE on Friday.
If i'm honest I was, and still am, slightly bemused by the arty side of the project but it did give me the opportunity to take a few abstracty, minimal architectural frames...which was nice.
I liked the recurring and parallel shadows from the stairs in this one.

I didn't know what I'd captured until I asked a few photo gurus - I thought something might be wrong with my camera! But no, apparently I'm just lucky. They're called 'ice pillars' or 'light columns', and happen when ice crystals reflect light.

A levitation photograph taken on an abandoned parking-lot in Rotterdam. My good friend Floris was kind enough to pose for this shot, even though it was both late and cold out. And you know, the fact that it involved me shooting fireworks at him.

Duga-3 (NATO reporting name Steel Yard) was a Soviet over-the-horizon radar system. It was developed for the Soviet ABM early-warning network. The system operated from 1976 to 1989. Its distinctive and mysterious shortwave radio signal came to be known in the west as the Russian Woodpecker.
Two stations of Duga-3 were installed: a western system around Chernobyl and an eastern system in Siberia.
The transmitter for the western Duga-3 was located a few kilometers southwest of Chernobyl (south of Minsk, northwest of Kiev). The receiver was located about 50 km northeast of Chernobyl (just west of Chernihiv, south of Gomel).
The Soviets had been working on early warning radar for their anti-ballistic missile systems through the 1960s, but most of these had been line-of-sight systems that were useful for raid analysis and interception only. None of these systems had the capability to provide early warning of a launch, which would give the defenses time to study the attack and plan a response. At the time the Soviet early-warning satellite network was not well developed, and there were questions about their ability to operate in a hostile environment including anti-satellite efforts. An over-the-horizon radar sited in the USSR would not have any of these problems, and work on such a system for this associated role started in the late 1960s. Duga-3 could detect submarines and missile launches in all of Europe and the Eastern coast of United States.
The first experimental system, Duga-1, was built outside Mykolaiv in Ukraine, successfully detecting rocket launches from Baikonur Cosmodrome at 2,500 kilometers. This was followed by the prototype Duga-2, built on the same site, which was able to track launches from the far east and submarines in the Pacific Ocean as the missiles flew towards Novaya Zemlya. Both of these radar systems were aimed east and were fairly low power, but with the concept proven work began on an operational system. The new Duga-3 systems used a transmitter and receiver separated by about 60 km.
A 35 man (plus guides) trip to the Ukraine exploring Chernobyl, the village, Duga 3, Pripyat and Kiev including Maidan (Independence Square) and observing the peaceful protests underway.
Some new faces, some old, made new friends and generally we were in our elements.
Rhetorical question but did we have a blast? You bet!
