As I walk through the forest, I hear that sweet song that can’t be mistaken by non other than the white-throated sparrow. It takes a break from foraging and I snap its photo…

“As we struggle with shopping lists and invitations, compounded by December’s bad weather, it is good to be reminded that there are people in our lives who are worth this aggravation, and people to whom we are worth the same.” – Donald E. Westlake

As the Sun rises over the Dornoch Firth Class 66s with 414 in Powerhaul livery on the stops and 534 on the other end with 5 Autobalasters sandwiched inbetween ready for a week of Far North Ballast drops. With this working always a pair of 37s Iam afraid this will be the new normal now, however nonetheless a picture for everyone with the inclusion of the Scania T cab and the Komatsu PC 390 excavator surrounded by the beautiful Scottish scenery what's not to like.

As I was driving down a country road on the outskirts of Abilene, TX, I saw this abandoned horse trailer in a field. These vehicles probably cost a fortune new, so it's a wonder that this one is abandoned.

Lost

As I drove around the South of Ireland I couldn't help but think that the fact that Irish sheep and cattle get to enjoy these landscapes on a regular basis may just explain why Irish cheese, specially Irish Cheddar, is such a delicious thing.

As the sun breaks though the clouds, I hope and pray that this present darkness of uncertainty and fear will be dispelled by the divine light that shines from Heaven into all our hearts and lives.

The Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, which opened on October 8, 2005, is the building dedicated to the performing arts and opera within the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències complex in Valencia. Designed by the Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava, it is part of the urban development plan launched in 1996 along the former riverbed of the Turia River. The structure, approximately 75 meters high and covering more than 40,000 square meters, is distinguished by its imposing laminated roof shaped like a feather or helmet, supported by two pillars and clad in white ceramic mosaic (trencadís), a traditional Mediterranean technique. Inside, it houses four main halls, including the Main Hall, with 1,412 seats, designed for opera, and the Auditori. Home to the Valencian Community Orchestra, the building has faced, over the years, problems with the exterior cladding peeling away, requiring conservation work. The image captures the complex at dusk, reflected in the water features surrounding the architectural complex.

As summer heat looms on the horizon, a few last spring flowers share their beauty.

As the sun sets on 2020 it's worth remembering that, despite all its troubles and sorrow, there has still been wonder and joy and people to cherish

As Winter is nowhere in sight here I'm sharing one from a month ago. Beautiful sunset was topped by the stunning fall colors of the birch trees. Amazing Indian summer!

As the commercials would say back in the '60s: the closer he gets, the better he looks (I think it was a shaving cream commercial.) WC eastbound freight T008 (Point-Shops) with 90 cars @1202 led by SD45, GP30, GP40 (6522....), is now passing that distant signal pair; a Soo Line? business car tucked in behind the engines. That southbound ("eastbound" to the Soo and to the earlier WC) signal shows up in Charlie Whipp's fine photo of a Soo Line freight going the other way back in '79. The extra signal on the left side of the mast, sometimes called a dummy signal, indicated that a track intervened (in this case a spur/team track that I never saw in use, but it was probably for the Kitz & Pfeil hardware store on the other side of the main and behind me), and the mainline on which T008 is riding. As I recall, the dummy signal would light up "lunar" (white to non-rails) to remind a crew of that condition. My trusty Honda Civic is photo-bombing here...all my fault but I've no problem remembering it.

Today we went to the Four Mile Beach north of Santa Cruz, California. It was a beautiful afternoon, no clouds. I took this long exposure shot in the blue hour 30 minutes after sunset using an ND8 neutral density filter on the vintage Dream Lens.

I processed a balanced and a photographic HDR photo from a RAW exposure, merged them selectively, and carefully adjusted the color balance and the curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

As the sun peeked over the fells behind it reflected in the mist and on the lake. It had the appearance of a fire as the geese sauntered by feeling it's warmth but not getting cooked!

As a solitary cantor in the twilight, the blackbird sings his cantata for the awakening garden. In the gentle half‑light, his clear phrases weave through the silence, each one separated by brief, solemn pauses. His recurring themes take on a fresh, expectant glow in the morning, and a warm, almost sacred calm in the evening — as if twice a day he offers a small liturgical composition to the rhythm of nature.

As I was changing locations along the shoreline at Mono Lake, the sky started to get some color in the clouds. The color never did get any better as the sun went down. I was able to set up the tripod and get a few pictures of this composition as the sun set. As you can see, I wasn't the only one enjoying the view. The photographer in the foreground gives you a scale to compare the height of the tufas.

As though the carved heads outside and the zigzag carving of the tower arch were not enough, each of the dozen or so columns supporting the arches in the nave have rich carving on their capitals. In astonishingly good condition, they're both varied and imaginative, mostly featuring creatures in a style I would describe as Celtic. These may be leopards, or some mythical beast, though I don't suppose there was much chance of a stonemason having seen a real leopard in the 12th century.

This evening has a gorgeous sunset.

Makes me happy.

Straight out of the Camera

As a photographer, a common theme I like to find is minimal geometry and patterns in nature or man-made objects.

This photo represents geometrical patterns and shapes created by the architecture and reflection of the Prudential Plaza in Jacksonville, FL. I walk past this building so many times, but one day managed to stand underneath it, and discovered this magic.

The architect is KBJ Architects from Jacksonville, FL, a firm responsible for shaping the incoming Jacksonville skyline we have today.

Please let me know if you have any thoughts or comments on how I can improve this.

As the Rock Island piggies go to market, a GM&O RS1 (55) heads over to the Rock with a transfer. I posted a closer shot of this erstwhile RS1 some time ago, but as I scan the rest of my GM&O stuff I just liked this more distant shot of the chortling beast passing over the brick street, the trailers of the "pig-train", and the other aspects of the urban scene. That naturally made me curious about that TOFC and what was on the point, so out came the shots of that.

As long as it's white : )

As rays of light, descend and shine

Invading the depths of natures wine

A lone tree rises from down below

Into the light of life's sweet glow

Reaching up, reaching high

Dreaming that one day it'll touch the sky

As rays of fate, descend and shine

Drinking the beauty of sweet natures wine

As the battle with the proposed Point Molate casino ensues, the landscape reamins silent, observant.

She can do nothing.

She can feel nothing.

She only can inspire, grow, leaf, endure, glow, flower, whisper and senesce.

As we were leaving Sequoyah State Park, we passed a pasture with several great looking goats. They were happy to pose for tourists and were used to people stopping.

As the early morning sun rises above the sea the first part of Looe to see it are the houses near the seafront at West Looe. where they are bathed in golden light.

The twin towns of East Looe and West Looe sit either side of the Looe River in south-east Cornwall. These days it is an important holiday resort which retains a small fishing industry. But in the 19th century when tin- and copper-mining was at its height Looe was an important port and was connected to the mines on Bodmin Moor by a tramway, a canal and - eventually - a railway. That railway was subsequently converted to carry passengers.

As another successful weekend drew to a close and trains started petering out, I readied for home. However, ATCS indicated an eastbound train on the Dayton District. Hell, why not?

To my surprise, NS 4003 was leading this evening's NS 376, seen crossing over the Miami River south of Dayton, OH.

WINNER!

As it happened, no photo shop!...a case of being in the right place at the right time.

As in life. After using my Pentax Spotmatic for many years I decided to get more modern and went with a Minolta 7000i autofocus 35mm SLR. Sony purchased Minolta's camera division and carried on using A mount with its DSLRs. So I ended up with quite a few Minolta lenses that were very inexpensive second hand - before the Sony purchase. This was taken with a Minolta AF 200mm f2.8G APO on my Sony A7R with Sony mirrorless adapter.
