As a tower and interlocking nut, I can appreciate a railroad shot without a train in it. Scenes of towers and interlockings are some of my favorites, even without a train. Looking west off the 17th Street Bridge in Altoona, PA, we see ALTO Tower and interlocking. Perhaps the most famous tower on the Pittsburgh Line, ALTO was one of the busiest. By the end of its career, it controlled the entire Altoona terminal area. While ALTO itself looks in decent shape, the state of the interlocking isn't the best, especially given the immense amount of weeds in the plant. ALTO survived decades after this 1971 shot, finally being closed under Norfolk Southern in 2012.

As its name suggests, the Chalk Hill Blue is found on chalk downland, although limestone downland is also used. This is a highly-variable butterfly and many named aberrations of this species exist. Adults feed primarily on Common Bird's-foot-trefoil (Lotus corniculatus).
This male Chalk Hill Blue was seen on a hillside in Surrey.

As you drive towards Portland, you will end up in a parking lot quite close to the lighthouse and beyond which you will not be able to proceed...Portland Bill Lighthouse is one of the most beautiful lighthouse locations I have ever been to...I have always dreamed of going well into the ocean and framing the lighthouse with the adjacent rocks and water. This is one place that offers this unique vantage point.
Although I had shot this almost a year ago, I somehow had overlooked one of the best places I had been during my trip to the Jurassic Coast. I can still feel the bitter cold that was that morning. The hues in the sky were just there for a brief moment after which the sun came out fully well and eclipsed the colors that were there on display.

As ‘32 Ford (“Deuce”) rods go, this one is a really clean example. Thankfully conditions at the moment allowed a nice, unobstructed view of this car, always something of a fleeting moment at any given Cars & Coffee type event!
As we sailed from South Georgia south to Antarctica we saw groups of Chinstrap Penguins diving in the water. It was a real challenge to photograph them because you never knew where they were going to come up. Taken near Elephant Island, Point Valentine which is located 152 miles NE of the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula in the South Shetland Islands. Another photo is in the comment box.

As the Kailash Trek is only 3 days and 2 nights long and with tea houses and basic restaurants all around the mountain, you do not need to carry a lot of gear. Most people carry a 50 to 80 liter backpack for this trek which carries a sleeping bag, 2 liters of water, snacks, basic toiletries and extra clothing such as socks, underwear and fleece. If you do need a porter or pack animals, they are available through the Purang County Tourism Bureau. They operate an official office where you can arrange porters, horses and yaks. If you need to use these services, tell your guide the day before you arrive to Darchen. Upon reaching Darchen, remind your guide to arrange the porter or pack animals that you will need. This needs to be done at least the afternoon before you plan to start trekking.

Der Doppelkegel schließt mit dem „Ringbeam“ ab, ein Ring, der die Last des Dachs gleichmäßig verteilt und über die Außenfassade in den Boden ableitet. Statisch gesehen bestehen Dach und Doppelkegel zwar aus einem Stück, der Doppelkegel ist jedoch auch gleichzeitig ein wichtiger Träger der 16.000 m² großen Dachkonstruktion.
Um das Dach wie eine schwebende Wolke wirken zu lassen, ist die geringe Zahl sichtbarer Stützen von entscheidender Bedeutung. Nur elf solcher Stützen tragen das Dach, das den Markusplatz in Venedig überspannen könnte.

As the days are getting pretty short here in Iceland now, I only get time to shoot on Sundays as other days I am working while there is still light. Some Sundays have bad weather so there is way to much time between my shooting sessions now.
The good thing is that I can edit more of my latest shots. Here is the only decent Aurora session I have had this season. It was very productive and I still have some good shots unedited.

A great view of the Le Vieux Port, also known as Port Cannes, with Mont Chevalier in the Le Suquet district in the background. You can also see Musée de la Castre and Notre-Dame D’Espérance on top of the hill as well. The port is a nice place to walk around and look at all the luxury yachts and play toys of the wealthy.

The tired sun sheds its waning light

As the sun begins to disappear behind the horizon, UP 2523 shows up at the west end of North Platte leading the produce train, about to enter the largest rail yard in the world. The train will be serviced here at the terminal and continue on its eastbound journey towards Global 3, IL.
As photographers, we are constantly reading the life scenes around us. Even without camera in hands, we are making our compositions with our eyes.
Like the man I saw at the bus stop on Main Street, he is reading with full concentration and focus while nobody else can interfere.

Another one from our amazing Aurora session. Shot just outside Reykjavík. We where planing on another location but while driving to there the Aurora suddenly became really active. We stopped by the side of the road, ran outside and set up our gear because we knew it would only last a few minutes. The Aurora was sweeping across the whole sky so it was kinda hard to point our cameras as the Aurora was constantly changing its location in the sky.
Shot with my newly purchased Canon EF-S 10-22mm lens. This one is shot @10mm:
ISO400, f3.5, 15sec and with manual focus set to infinity as it was to dark for the focus system.
To bad there wasn´t any moonlight that night for light on the foreground so I had to boost it in PS.
As soon as we descended into Prague’s subway system and saw these designs, my wife said ‘Ooo Dr Who!’; the bumps being very reminiscent of the Darleks!
This shot was taken on the C line platform at the Museum station. Each line has a different colour scheme.
