I bumped into one of Kansas City's notable citizens today while walking. I knew who he was by reputation and stopped to talk with him. I also knew that he graduated from Southeast High School in Kansas City in the same class as my father.

Wilbur Niewald has been painting for over five decades. In the 1960s, he moved out of his early Mondrian-inspired abstraction into representation, and began drawing and painting from the figure, still life and landscape.

The artist's subject matter--self-portraits and portraits of his family, Kansas City parks and cityscapes, still lifes and his studio at the Kansas City Art Institute (where Niewald taught for over 40 years)--is familiar to anyone who has followed his career. Not only are his painted forms consistently solid and clear--seemingly chiseled and polished until they feel crystalline--they also convey a sense of the familial, as if they had been nurtured rather than brushed into fruition. Present also in the work is Niewald's ongoing dialogue with other artists, especially Cezanne, Corot and Chardin.

I spent a good part of the afternoon with my friend Chris Riggs, who's a local artist. You can see just SOME of his paintings on his Flickr Account. He actually has a 3 floor house packed with his work.

We did a little photoshoot as he was working on his most recent paintings. We picked a pretty bad timing to shoot because the sun was up high and extremely harsh. I did use my DIY beauty dish for a few of shots but mostly, it just wasn't up to the challenge. A few portraits, 2 of which were shot with the dish, can be found on my facebook page.

Nelly a disparue

Artistic Intervention The Hand of Alfredo Segatori, Argentine painter and muralist; the iconic "fingers" of Punta del Este changed its appearance.
