Specimen collected from Bole Hill Recreation Ground, Crookes, Sheffield.
The latest sixth generation is significantly thinner than the previous models. Can't beat the retro appeal of the original, though.

By now, the apple tree is about done with flowering. The last few petals are still holding on, but the next stiff breeze likely will carry them away, too. Keeping my fingers crossed that pollination was successful. We had a few cold mornings with the flowers and leaves actually covered in hoar frost and I didn't see a whole lot of pollinators buzzing about doing their business. So we'll see how things develop over the next few weeks and months.
If pollination went well, the receptacle on these flowers will swell into an accessory fruit, with the inferior ovary forming the apple's core containing the seeds. The stamens and sepals you see here on top of the swelling receptacles can often still be found buried into the top center of ripe apples.
Apple 'Allington Pippin', mid September. An English dual-purpose culinary-dessert apple which can be used initially as for baking (it keeps its shape when cooked) but after a few months in store the flavour mellows to an intense fruit drop or pineapple flavour. Bred by Thomas Laxton in the late 19th century when he was based in Stamford, Lincolnshire. In 1894, the variety was acquired by George Bunyard of Maidstone, Kent, who changed its name from the 'South Lincoln Pippin' to the 'Allington Pippin' after his Allington Nurseries.

I finally made the jump and got myself an Apple TV. Only took about two minutes to get it up and running. If it works as well as it looks then I am sure it will be a great buy and get plenty of use.
