Already in 1683 self-taught botanist James Sutherland (c.1639-1719) was cultivating this plant in his Physic Garden on the grounds of Trinity Hospital in Edinburgh. He records it in the census of plants of this, the first Botanical Garden in Scotland, as Colutea flore rubello and in English as 'Red flowered Bastard-Senna from the Cape of good Hope'. Later it was given his name in Latin: Sutherlandia, and later again it goes scientifically by Lessertia frutescens. Lessertia is for Jules Paul Benjamin de Lessert (1773-1847). Usually today it's called Sutherlandia or Balloon Pea or Cancerbush. It's reputed to be an immune booster.

Apparently it's also some sort of psychic medicine: Zulus call it umwele, meaning something like an antidote to 'pulling one's hair out in distress'. In Afrikaans Sutherlandia goes by a pet-name eentjies (ducks) or gansies (geese) because of the seed pods or bladders (see photo) that float in water.

Mad Max Fury Road was an awesome movie, with plenty of unique car designs. Calin has built most of them already in a perfect way, but lucky not my personal favorite yet, the spiky car from the sand bandits.

Calling this a rebuild true to the original would overstate it, but I tried to capture at least the spirit of the vehicle: Spikes!

This week I posted also a topview shot of a similar immature fungus 'Chondrostereum purpureum' and after a few days I went back to see how it was developing, but it was gone already.

Luckily there were other immature ones. I choose this one to follow. I must say that I like this beginning appearance very much. ;-)

After a few days this one looks like this.

"Silver leaf is a fungal disease of trees caused by the fungus plant pathogen Chondrostereum purpureum. It attacks most species of the rose family Rosaceae, particularly the genus Prunus. The disease is progressive and often fatal. The common name is taken from the progressive silvering of leaves on affected branches. It is spread by airborne spores landing on freshly exposed sapwood. For this reason cherries and plums are pruned in summer, when spores are least likely to be present and when disease is visible. Silver Leaf can also happen on poming fruits like apples and pears. Plums are especially vulnerable.

In the past the name Stereum purpureum Pers. was widely used for this fungus, but according to modern taxonomy it is only distantly related to Stereum, actually belonging to order Agaricales whereas Stereum is in order Russulales.

After starting as just a crust on the wood, the fruiting structure develops undulating intergrowing brackets up to about 3 cm broad, which have a tough rubbery texture. The edges and fertile lower surfaces show a fairly vivid violet colour while the fungus is growing, and the upper surfaces have a grey aspect (sometimes with zonation) and are covered with whitish hairs. After a week or two the fructification dries out, becomes brittle, and turns a drab brown or beige. Infected wood can be recognized because it is stained a darker tint.

The spores are rounded cylinders approximately 5-8 µm x 3-4 µm in size. The hyphal structure is monomitic with clamp connections.

It is often found on old stumps and dead wood, but can also be a serious parasite of living trees. As well as plum trees it attacks many other broad-leafed species (other Prunus, apple, pear, willow, poplar, maple, hornbeam, plane, oak, elm, lilac, and many others).Occasionally it also infects conifers (fir, spruce, Thuja, ...).Geographically it is roughly speaking just as widespread as its hosts - it is common in woods, orchards and tree plantations in temperate climates.

Chondrostereum purpureum is commercially available as a method of combatting forest "weed" trees such as red alder, aspens and other species. The fungus is applied directly to the weed trees in a nutrient paste which can be stored and handled conveniently. According to a report of the Canadian Pest Management Agency, the use of this control method will only have a limited impact on non-target trees since the fungal spores are ubiquitous anyway and healthy trees are resistant to attack." - WiKi

- WiKi

James was already dead, or ‘permanently infrathinned’ as Marcel and he preferred to call it. I mean Duh! Dolly was cloned on the 5th of July in 1996, and James sloughed off this mortal coil in 1941, and anyone keeping with the programme now recognises that we are knee-deep in ‘Infrathin’, or A.I. as the techie bozos like to call it.

So here we find ourselves floating in infinity. When, can you tell me, has it ever been any different?

I guess, that somehow, I will have to make this clearer. Stating one’s intentions is, perhaps, a good place to start.

I suspect that when you find yourself heading rather rapidly towards infinity, it's probably a good exercise to try and describe it, or at least it is something to do that could ease the transition.

La única vez que realmente pille al sol era en el aeropuerto ya volviendo a Barcelona. Tuve muy poco. Cogí la cámara y corrí hacía unas escaleras para subir a una terraza. El sol al final se fue tan rápido que sólo me quede con esta.

The only time I real got to take a picture of the sun was when I already was on the aiport heading back home to Barcelona. I took the camera, took some stairs and ran towards a terrace where I got this photo just before the sun was gone.

Officially the last image of the table series. It's been about 6 months and while I don't think I've repeated myself I also think everything has been said. This has without a doubt been the most whimsical series I've ever done.

For some reason people laugh uncomfortably when I tell them that.

Already in the end of January I start seeing small hopes for an early Spring. Here is a memory from the best time of the year when the cherry blossom last for those couple of days.

First stop in India. The adventure did already start. Last night with Abduhalli, a friend from Nigeria. I wanted to make pictures of Paharganj night before starting my trip to Srinagar (Himalaya) in a 28 hours bus.

I'm such a careless person, I thought it'd be easy but it's not. Thanks for (accidentally) letting me know where I'm standing now and I promise I won't cross that line :) So sorry if I ever made it hard for you. Wish you will see another sun rise soon after this sun sets ^^

I have already posted a pic of this house at Barry Island, but Mox expressed an interest in seeing its lower parts ...not visible in the earlier photo.

The site, sloping towards the sea, has resulted in a small but attractive terraced garden and a curving flight of steps. Garage doors look original. I wish the same could be said for the windows.

I commissioned cinfelix for a drawing a few days ago and she already finished! <3 It's so gorgeous!

I have no idea if she has more slots or when she'll open them back up, but here's her info everyone! :D

I havent shot much over the last two Weeks thanks to the absolutely miserable Weather we had around here most of the Time, but i still have many more Shots taken during the beautiful Winter Weather we had here for a Week back in January i want to show. One of them is this View of a Tree in the Fields not far from the Place where i live taken earlier on the same Day as "On a beautiful Winter Day 2." the Shot i shared on Sunday.I already showed the same Tree in "A lonely Tree on a bleak Winter Morning." a Shot i shared two Weeks ago but as the mood of both Shots is totaly different i thought its ok to share both.

Elise and parents went home today after a two week visit. We thoroughly enjoyed having them and miss them already. Its rather quiet here now, lol! She sure enjoyed Amber the bear for the week with lots and lots of hugs. Ten months have passed so quickly!

Make it a good one.

"Oh when something's gone it's gone for good

Maybe I could look away

Back to where we used to be

One more time, I wish I could"

-Already Gone, Blue Rodeo

As I already did in 2016, I once again utilized a sleepless night in April to try for some natterjack portraits in early morning light. When life gives you insomnia you might as well make some photography out of it.

So I ventured out around 5:00 a.m. to have a look at a translocation sight to where parts of a larger population were transplanted. The original habitat had to make way for a larger urban development project. Available evidence seems to suggest that wildlife relocation is not necessarily an ideal compensation measure (especially when conducted on smaller populations) and should always be a well considered step with tight monitoring of results. Nonetheless it seems to still be used quite nonchalantly - and sometimes conducted sloppily - when financial interests are on the line.

I very much like the light and mood the situation provided but still have to overcome the need to shoot on the lowest possible ISO setting as evidenced by the gular pumping action of the toad resulting in motion blurr. For some reason I just can't deal with image noise. Just one of these moments, where I wish I could afford one of the fancier camera bodies with a stronger ISO perfomance.

ATA HISTORY

The American Thresherman Association (ATA) was organized in March of 1959.

At the annual meeting in 1962, Amos Rixman commented that the Association "organized three years ago this month for the purpose of furnishing some enjoyment to its members and to be the beginning of something very worthwhile." Already in its brief life the Association had earned such a reputation that three towns vied for the chance to become the permanent site for the show. The Pinckneyville Chamber of Commerce invited the ATA with open arms and pledges of support, and the Perry County community was chosen over Mascoutah and Highland for the 1962 show site.

Already three years ago I was in the Dolomites, stunning scenery everywhere. 5500 pictures I took, and I have a few to share.

In the recent weeks there were many shots of people who I follow that had been there this year and that inspired me to go back to my own shots.

One of the pictures that I still had on my posting list was this one. Earlier I had already posted a panorama from the other side (www.flickr.com/photos/115540984@N02/52272675137/in/album-...), and there was always a sort of doubt which of the two I liked better.

The walk to Lago di Sorapis was quite tough as far as I can remember, but the reward was big. I never had heard a singing lake, but this lake did. If you want to know more about that the description can be found on my other posting.
