What a cool scene I sensed here as I turned the corner first. As always, the people were helpful and so very nice. Many are rather curious, or let's put it this way, they pretend to be curious. (¬‿¬)
The composition was already clear to me, as I had already been here the day before and was able to memorize my position well. This photo is perhaps a little more sombre, but on closer inspection, the joy and colors here have by no means disappeared. Because these details, joy and color will always be part of my photos.
I love her art Hania Rani so young and so talented. The song Glass the video ♫ was recorded in Berlin and many sequences were shot in the district where I grew up. Speaking of Berlin, I may soon have something completely new from Berlin in terms of photography. But will that be something for Flickr? I'm not sure yet. Anyway, I won't have much time to share photos anytime soon, but I'll try to keep an eye on your excellent work.

“Oh no here we go again. He’s finally lost it. Three shots already uploaded from that infernal ridge walk and yet he still manages to find another one to rattle on about!” is what you might be thinking. I’m starting to have the same thoughts myself. It doesn’t help that I’ve done so little photography since that adventure. Ok so there’s a van related wild camp caper on Dartmoor the week before last to report tales of yet to come, but I’m still to work those raw files into shape. The thing is, that afternoon on the high ground of the Brecon Beacons in South Wales brought one composition after another as the landscape gradually revealed new secrets with each phase of the trek. All of them taken with a lens that really deserves a bit more love in return for its efforts. This one brought the peaks of Fan y Big, Cribyn, Pen y Fan and Corn Du into a single frame, with an illuminated bonus foreground designed by the icy architects of this landscape to offset the four dark shrouds behind.
Like so many of us I started out with a modest assembly of tools for my induction into this world that we share. A midrange camera, a couple of reasonably price lenses sourced from your favourite auction site, a cheap tripod, an even cheaper bag and some very inexpensive filters that would be better suited as coasters for tea cups. And then I got carried away – a sorry tale of obsession, a descent of the senses so steep as to be matched only by the plummeting bank balance as a full frame camera and professional lenses were added to the bag, itself replaced by a new model of course. The cheap filters gave way to the same set that Nigel Danson swears by, and then of course a carbon fibre tripod was a must wasn’t it? Not long ago I looked at the collection, did some mental arithmetic, and decided it was best not to mention the final score to my better half, who has far more modest tastes. A new pair of knitting needles is as racy as she gets when it comes to freeing up budget for luxuries. When people take her to task on her innate sense of thrift, with metronomic consistency she replies with “how do you think I managed to retire in my fifties on what I was earning?” She has a point. You become so much wealthier by desiring less in life.
But in that bagful of precious things lies the lens that so often gets overlooked – only really brought into use at moments when lugging the others around is going to prove challenging. I think of it as my adventuring lens. After all I’d have needed a team of sherpas to roll my 100-400mm lens up the first slope of Fan y Big on a series of felled tree trunks if I’d wanted to take it with me. So for long arduous treks, the lightweight lens with the huge focal length gets its day in the sun; and the rain too for that matter. I used it a lot that day as you may already be aware from a surfeit of previous posts. When I uploaded the raw files from the hike onto my computer at home my first reaction was one of enormous disappointment – so many of them were fuzzy and grainy and I found myself heading down the familiarly dangerous route of eBay as I blamed the lens once more for its inadequacies, while stubbornly ignoring my own shortcomings. Misplaced vainglory is such an unattractive web in which to entangle oneself.
Eventually, after much soul searching and further experimenting at 300mm on the tripod in my living room I concluded that the maligned lens was entirely free of blame – it was me who was at fault. I resolved to learn to use it properly and stop poring over alternatives on the internet each time I fail. In fact it went to Dartmoor with me so you’ll be able to judge for yourself which one of us has performance issues to come to terms with in due course. I think we both know already it’s me and not the lens.
I’m sitting at my laptop in the aforementioned van, where the strains of the annual music festival that take place on the estate across the road from us are drifting across the trees towards me on the gentlest of summer evening breaths. It might be Razorlight; it might be Goldie Looking Chain I can hear, but this year the neighbours don’t appear to have been invited to the party in atonement for the interruption to our weekend peace so I’ve really no idea. I’ve moved on from indignation to indifference now. We didn’t really want to go anyway. At least it’s nearly over and it’s Bank Holiday Monday tomorrow with its stay of execution from the real world for one more day.
This might be the last image I post from that ridge walk, but the trouble is there’s at least one more of them jumping up and down in the shadows waving its arms about if I can drag another tale out of the adventure. For now I’ll work harder at familiarising myself with that lens.
I'm a thousand miles from what I had before
It's only now I realize where I'm from
Maybe I'm already home
Home is inside
Take it with me
Wherever the map may lead
I'll be where I have to be

I already wrote about that morning in China a while back. Feel free to look up the other image to get the full picture. Hint: There's a wall in the photo.
Over the years I experienced my fair share of good moments on various journeys. And just like with everything good that happens in life, these moments come, these moments go, some of them I appreciated and too many others I took for granted. Every once in a while however one of them makes me stop and overwhelms me with feeling the deepest gratefulness for being able to live that moment.
Thirty minutes later the mist was gone.
The doll is named Ling and is made by a company called Karito--there are 6 dolls of different ethnic heritages who come with passports and a book that has a story and journal which creates a personality for each individual doll. Ling is Chinese--I've already gotten another doll for Genevieve, Pita from Mexico. Karito has its own website for kids where they can play games (they win points which allows them to contribute to humanitarian projects they'd like to help), read and post blogs & messages, learn about other countries, get their own online passport which gets stamped when games are played, and are encouraged to try to "save the world" by helping others--another important feature is that the children can pick one of four designated charities and donate 3% of the doll's price.

Wheal Coates was busier than I’d have liked it to be. It is the start of half term I suppose, and on the previous day I’d already witnessed the evidence of a massed cavalcade of fun seekers heading along the A30 towards our far flung corner of the country as I’d tried to make my own short journey east towards a wet and windy Ladock Wood. The approach to Wheal Coates entails a stretch of single lane tarmac where it’s normal to have to pull in for the odd passing car and exchange of the quintessentially British “thank you” waves as you make your way along it. Even in summer I generally only have to stop a couple of times. Yesterday no less than ten cars decided to travel in the opposite direction as I tried to make progress along it. I even had to reverse twice. One of the beneficiaries of my generosity didn’t even bother to wave. Quietly unimpressed I continued.
When I arrived in the small car park it seemed even more full than at any time I saw it in July or August. A father chided his son for unidentifiable reasons as they approached the car right next to where I had parked. I decided to stay put until their squabble was done and they were on the way to wherever they were going as the latest of the bands of rains that had been passing throughout the day came straight over us. At least the light looked promising. Finally deciding it was safe to leave the car without involuntarily joining anyone else’s domestic troubles I headed down the main path, taking a right hand turn to a place where I fancied I’d find some space to myself.
Unfortunately, the spot I settled on for my composition guaranteed that the isolation I always look for wasn’t going to happen. Wheal Coates always attracts both locals and visitors along its web of clifftop paths, and I’d set my tripod up next to the South West Coast Path itself. I’d arrived with the intention of looking for some strong foreground interest to work with my wide angle lens, but was immediately drawn to the spray drifting over huge rocks in the sea a few miles along the coast, which found me reaching for the telephoto instead. Within moments the light changed for the better and the girl in the wellies, accompanied by an older companion with a dog yards behind her strolled into the scene. As the opportunity to catch a moment thudded somewhere between my ears it struck me that I only wanted a single figure in the foreground, and with the camera off the tripod I had to go for a quick, handheld composition before the rest of the party joined her. I soon forgot the shot as the light intensified with a dark bluish cloud complementing the sunlit orange tones in the foreground heather – that almost sounds as if I know what I’m on about.
The stream of humans continued, a young chap engaging me on the subject of art and photography before racing off to find his easel so he could paint St Agnes Beacon. Later I was joined by another local photographer, who asked if he could set up next to me. I learned to my surprise that he was a dairy farmer with a herd of 400 cows and lived next to Ladock Wood, the scene of my previous photo taken a day earlier. I was amazed that he found time for any hobbies at all. I think he was too. Sadly for him he’d missed the best of the light, the sun sinking behind a bank of ominous slate grey cumulus and with no apparent intention of reappearing for the rest of the evening.
And so I returned home to review my images, deciding that this one with the sea spray spreading over the cliffs was the one to share with you. The trouble was that it wasn’t level – I often struggle with horizons – and when I tried to straighten it the girl in the wellies ended up right at the edge of the frame. So I had to move her. Not bodily you understand – we hadn’t been properly introduced and there’s a pandemic on as you’re probably aware. I’d never tried this before and in truth my Photoshop skills are more or less non-existent. But somehow I blundered my way through yet another hack and lifted her up and moved her five yards along the path. I’d rather not have done this, but very occasionally you just have to. It doesn’t seem to be that much of an untruth when some people routinely use sky replacement tools in their final images – although I should add there’s nothing wrong with that if it’s what works for you. It's all about choice - it's just that I won't be doing it because to me, photos are about moments, memories and feelings.
Content that she was now more comfortably positioned I looked closer into the image and saw people everywhere. Usually I prefer to cull unwanted participants in my images, but as I was about to hit the content aware fill command on the first group I hesitated. They were part of the story after all, I reasoned. And so they’ve stayed just where I found them - enjoying a Sunday stroll on a wind blown Cornish clifftop.

We already leave the Mahorčič Cave (at the foreground you can see the Reka river). We were there after visiting the Škocjan Caves and little walk along the Big Collapse Doline :)
The Mahorčič Cave (Mahorčičeva Jama) was named after a local explorer Josef Mahorčič who was also the mayor of Naklo. The cave sits directly below the Škocjan village, after which the entire cave system got its name and is also where the Reka River flows underground. The sunlight streaming into the cave makes for an absolutely scenic shot.
The Reka river is the widest known sinking stream of the Classical Karst area in Slovenia, and it has been studied since the Antiquity. This river formed the Škocjan Caves, long limestone cave system which comprises one of the world's largest known underground river canyons, which was proclaimed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1986.

Światło słoneczne wpadające do jaskini tworzy malownicze widoki.
I took this while on a walk last weekend in Vancouver and when I ran it through Analog Efx (just playing around for the Sliders Sunday group) this treatment stood out to me as a somewhat symbolic of the heart breaking crisis of separated migrant children in the US who are being denied their childhood, locked up in cages at detention centres, fearing for their future and already deeply traumatized by what they have experienced in their home countries, and now this.

Already in 1876 the first railway line in Istria between Divača and Pula was opend. Pula was the austrian main naval base in the adriatic see, so the line had a huge strategic importance. Interesting about this picture is the km stone plate. It is probably from the time of the Italian occupation of Istria between the first world war and 1943 when the Germans occupied this territory.

This is actually one of the locations that Lee and Patrick from Fstoppers.com and I used as a lesson while filming Photographing The World. While some of you already know that, something you may not know is that Lee almost got us kicked out of here for flying his DJI Phantom 2! Apparently local building security thought we were using it to spy on people in their tiny apartments. Thankfully I was able to sweet talk my way out of the situation and still come away with the shot!
It’s unbelievable to me that people can live so tightly packed in like this. On the other hand, it’s also really cool to think that a place that most people rarely give a second look, or consider to be so ugly, can look so beautiful and interesting to a photographer. It reminds me of all those years ago when I was wandering the Stockholm Underground and came across what has always been one of my favorite photos in my portfolio, Belly of the Beast. It’s seeing places like this that always remind me that beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.

You've probably noticed it already... but for those who haven't... there's this viral thing going around Facebook at the moment where photographers challenge each other to post five black & white photos in 5 days... and to nominate one other person for every photo that they post.
So last week my buddy Mike Scott invited me to participate in the 5 in 5 B&W challenge. At first I thought it was a really lame idea... I only ever see the world in colour... so why should I post black & white photos!? I have been known to post the occaaaasional monochrome photo... but only when the colours are so flat that they don't add anything extra to the image.
But after thinking it all over for a few days... I decided that this challenge was probably a good thing... it would force me to try something different... force me to step out of my colour comfort zone and see the world in a more artistic way. So I dug deep into my archives and reprocessed a five image panorama that I shot at Namibia's iconic "Dead Vlei" way back in September 2009. After I'd processed with my standard workflow... I converted it to black & white with the Nik Silver Efex filter plugin. But no matter how much I tweaked the photo in Silver Efex... I still preferred the original colour version... damn!
But then I adjusted the opacity of the mono layer in Photoshop... thereby reintroducing a little bit of colour to my mono conversion. I stopped at 80% opacity... hey this works for me... sure it's not a true black & white photo... but it certainly ain't a colour photo!
Sorry Mike... I tried but failed.
I now challenge Jan Zwilling to post 5 black & white photos within the next 5 days.

And the weekend ends with a sky full of colours, and a shining goodbye from that really important star. By Sunday. I miss you already.
🍀Surely many already have a small list of things they want to do before the summer. Is that right?🤔
⠀
🍀 The first item on my list: cook donuts.I don't know about you, but I've been wanting to learn how to cook them for a long time, especially since a couple of recipes have already been found.
The second point: to conduct 2-3 creative shootings.😄 Wouldn't it be interesting to do something creative and maybe gain new experience and learn something?😉
⠀
🍀Also next I have a few more points, but what have you decided to do before the summer? Do you have any suggestions? Is it possible that this is a vacation or any master classes? Feel free to share your plans in the comments! It will be interesting for me to read and maybe get to know you better :)😁

Wow, it’s January 5th. This year is already flying by! ;) I’m kidding, of course - it’s still too early to tell what the pace of the year will be.
But, I have to say that though we’re only a few short days into 2018, I can already tell that it’s going to be an incredible year, no matter how fast it decides to fly by. In fact, if I had to make a single resolution this year, it would be to be fully present in the now and enjoy every single moment to it’s fullest potential. Like this moment for example - a KP 5 aurora display over Godafoss Waterfall in Northern Iceland. While I captured hundreds of frames of the incredible northern lights, I also put the camera down for a while to enjoy the simple pleasure of just being a spectator during this once-in-a-lifetime and stunningly beautiful event.
Wishing you all a year full of wonderful experiences ahead! And if anyone wants to join me in Iceland this year, I’ll be leading another photo tour this November. All the info is available on www.dreamphototours.com .

Remember all the things we wanted
Now all our memories, they're haunted
We were always meant to say goodbye
Even with our fists held high
It never would have worked out right,
We were never meant for do or die...
I didn't want us to burn out
I didn't come here to hurt you now I can't stop...
I want you to know
It doesn't matter where we take this road
Someone's gotta go
And I want you to know
You couldn't have loved me better
But I want you to move on
So I'm already gone
Already with fox prints across my ramp, the night it fell (Sunday).
The next morning my partner cleared the snow from my ramp and driveway with a broom (we don't tend to keep snow shovels here, it's rare we get this much!), but having done one precarious trip to the Post Office today I think I'll be staying it til it melts later this week. Snow is definitely not wheelchair friendly!!

I'm already planning for this coming summer and it's a return to several places I love.
Last year's trip was... bad. I think it's safe to say that. There were a lot of great things about it, but it was a struggle, especially after leaving Pennsylvania. So, over 3,000 miles of exhaustion.
This wasn't taken on that trip, but on the one before it in 2023.
Here, a storm is brewing behind a very rural pioneer cemetery in northwest Nebraska. And yet, the sun is still shining and the sunflowers are still in bloom.
I'll often think of this place and the surrounding area. I didn't visit last year, but this coming year, I hope to.

Now I do already have a photo very much like this one but taken four years ago. The growth of the trees in front of the railway meant that the exact vantage point of four years ago was no longer available and I had to take a more head-on position. But the local service from Belfort to Vesoul still makes use of whales, as is evidenced by this photo. Colombier, 30-06-2020.
Portrait Round 6
Round 6 already? I can’t believe i’ve made it so far in this contest..
Well, the theme was “The fabric of your life” and I was pretty blocked at the moment I saw the description. The picture had to be very detailed, yes and it had to include some kind of fabric and texture. So I entered the game (which is TOTALLY laggy at the moment) and while I was trying to use some weird pose hack, Jillian started to do this “action” let’s call it and.. Vampire theme came to my mind.
Ok, she’s not exactly portraying a vampire here but she’s been drinking blood as you can see :O I know, it’s awkward, stupid, whatever you wanna call it, but it was the only idea that came to my mind.
This took quite a lot of time, I don’t know why.. I’ve been doing very small parts for a week until now. I got tired of it and I finished it xD I don’t have a lot of patience really O__o
If you wonder how did this start, here’s the
