Esquelbecq Castle

The castle was already mentioned in 1299, when the daughter of Thierry d'Esquelbecq, Beatrix, married Gauthier Ghistelles. Their descendants owned the Esquelbecq castle until 1584, when the French lords were forced to sell their possessions in Flanders by the Spanish rulers.

The castle was besieged several times. In 1586, part of the castle was destroyed by Spanish malcontents. From 1606-1610 the castle was rebuilt.

The purchaser and new lord and earl of Esquelbecq was Valentin de Pardieu, governor of Gravelines, who led campaigns with the armies of Charles V. When he died without heirs in 1595, the castle of Esquelbecq was left to his nephew Philippe Levasseur de Guernonval. His descendants owned the castle for the next 225 years. In 1793, the Esquelbecq castle also suffered the wrath of the Patriots. Everything that reminded them of the Ancien Régime was looted, destroyed or removed. At the beginning of the 19th century, the castle was ruined by battles and 15 days of enemy occupation. The Guernonval family abandoned it and finally sold it in 1821 to Louis Colombier, a merchant from Lille.

In 1984, the keep collapsed. From 2000 to 2016, restoration work was carried out.

The castle, outbuildings and garden and landscape park are protected and listed on 17-08-1987.

--------------------------

I am pretty sure I already used that title, but the alliteration works so well. The eastbound return of the ballast train with a pair of '60s yielded yet more shenanigans for the railfan observer. A Q was working Midway and blocking both mains, so a CP core train held short at St. Anthony to wait for a good run at the hill thereby occupying the plant here at Rollins Avenue. Thus, the ballast train got cozy on the Pioneer Extension. Eventually---eventually---things cleared up and the ballast train takes it easy towards St. Paul.

What was once an isolated, abandoned, and decrepit looking tower, Bunge now makes up a clean and colorful façade with new apartment complexes.

"Sometimes reopen on the walls

the already closed furrows of memory

and again the hidden pain flows

Dark and thin is the twisted line of time

I run backwards along the fissures of torments

I can't remember other than goodbyes

unrealized lives

undone dreams"

Our trip comes to an end and we are already starting to walk down from the trail to Bukowe Berdo in Bieszczady mountains :)

The Bukowe Berdo (Beech Berdo) is a mountain range, constituting an elongated range crowned with a mountain pasture with three culminations: Szołtynia (1201 m above sea level), Połonina Dzwiniacka (1238 m above sea level), and the last Beech Berdo (1311 m above sea level). It is characterized by a large presence of sandstone rocks. The peak parties are occupied by the mountain pastures. From above, especially from the highest peak, there is a wide view of the north and east, mainly to the Ukrainian areas. The dorsal parts below Połonina Dźwiniacka are overgrown with a shrubby rowan form, which is particularly effective in the autumn when its fruits ripen red. Occurs here, among others a few very rare species: eastern Carpathian peas, Broadleaf, Sedge sedge, Rock sedge, Matrix blight.

Bieszczady Mountains is a mountain range that runs from the extreme south-east of Poland and north-east of Slovakia through to western Ukraine. The highest peak of Bieszczady is Mt Pikui (1405 m) in Ukraine. The highest peak of the Polish part is Tarnica (1346 m). The vegetation zones, which are typically observed in other mountain ranges with a similar character, are significantly different in Bieszczady. Among the tree species found in the Park, the beech-tree dominates the forests, with an admixture of sycamore and fir trees, the Carpathian beechwood complexes are formed and those cover the slopes and valleys, while alder forests occur along streams. Beechwood forests grow up to 1,150 m above sea level and they are neighboring directly the mountain pastures, interspersed with bilberry, cowberry, grass, alder and rowan. There is no subalpine spruce forest in Bieszczady. Animal life in these mountains is abundant with several species of endangered animals thriving in the area, among them brown bears, grey wolf, European wildcat, wild boar, European beavers, European otter, and European lynx as well as deer (such as moose) and European bison (over 500 live in the area). The park contains interesting bird species, including eagles and owls, and is home to the largest Polish population of Aesculapian snakes.

Lasy bukowe dorastają do 1150 m n.p.m. i sąsiadują bezpośrednio z pastwiskami górskimi, przeplatane borówką, brusznicą, trawą, olszą i jarzębiną. W Bieszczadach nie ma subalpejskiego lasu świerkowego. W Bieszczadach występują rośliny i zwierzęta niespotykane w innych częściach Polski, a zwłaszcza takie, które lubią ciepło, np. największy europejski wąż Eskulapa. Dobrze zachowane pierwotne lasy bukowe stanowią prawdziwy raj dla zwierząt. Żyją w nich m.in. żubry, jelenie karpackie, niedźwiedzie, wilki, rysie, żbiki, bocian czarny, orzeł przedni, a od 2007 roku również koniki polskie.

Back in 2007, Union Pacific had a plethora of new power roaming the rails. A new GE ES44AC pilots a Long Beach - Global 2 stack train through colorful foliage east out of Ogden, Utah on Oct. 27, 2007. I suppose we won't see big fleets of new locomotives on the UP for the time being. Management has determined that rebuilding what they already have is most cost effective.

We had already been caught 3 times by security forces when we decided to risk it for a U-boat leader tagged on the front of our Toquepala train at Ilo. With our car parked several hundred yards up a steep slope, we made a quick pact to nab a single 'get in/get out' shot and then run like hell.

The minutes spent watching the empty train wind around the distant curves felt like an eternity. It was a heart-pounding wait. With 3 incidents already in the bag, we were terrified at the prospect of a 4th, especially since all of our information had been taken and our vehicle and passports logged. The tolerance of the commanding officer had worn perilously thin.

As the U23B leader crested the summit near Bryant, so too did the white Toyota Hilux packed to the brim with black-clad security guards.

As the train entered the frame, I anxiously looked back at my friend, gave him the "be ready to run" look, snapped my shot, and was full tilt up the desert slope. No time for a wave, no time to watch the engine pass, no time for glance at my picture. It was a true 'hold onto your britches, make for the escape pod, and don't look back' type beat

Out of breath, we reached the car and were back on the road; watching as the white Toyota Hilux continued to stay the course. Thankfully, whether they saw us or not, they decided not to pursue.

This photo was taken overflying the Namib desert

The name Namib is of Khoekhoegowab origin and means "vast place".

The Namib is considered the oldest desert in the world and there is evidence that it already existed during the Tertiary Era, 65 million years ago, when the dinosaurs became extinct. UNESCO declared the Namib a World Heritage Site in 2013.

I was already leaving the park, because the light was fading away, when I saw this very little woodpecker moving fast in a very tall tree. I've tried to get a good shot, but, beyond being too high, it never stopped and this was the best I could do. This is just a poor record of the species, don't need to comment, my friends.

“Some women get erased a little at a time, some all at once. Some reappear. Every woman who appears wrestles with the forces that would have her disappear. She struggles with the forces that would tell her story for her, or write her out of the story, the genealogy, the rights of man, the rule of law. The ability to tell your own story, in words or images, is already a victory, already a revolt.”

― Rebecca Solnit, Men Explain Things to Me

Chasing here, there and everywhere seeking more of the same.

When all you need to find you have already.

My 26 year old Green Wing Macaw. Huey is definitely not a name I would have chosen for her.

We got her when she was about a year old and she was already named. Then we had a DNA test done to find out her sex and it turned out she was female.

But she already knew her name so we just left it at that.

I am not an advocate for having these animals as pets or for people breeding them. In my opinion, they should remain in their natural habitats.

But Phil fell in love with her where she had lived for the first year of her life which was a local Grange Co-op here and he eventually talked me into us buying her and she became a part of our family.

She has it really good here with a very large outdoor aviary where she spends the majority of her time. She is pretty entertained seeing all kinds of wild birds and animals from her favorite vantage point in her aviary. Then I have various perches for her in different places so she can be with me and whomever else is around. But she seems to like her aviary the best.

Anyway, it would not be easy having a large parrot like this without the set up I have here for her and I would never advise anyone to have one of these birds as a pet. She will long outlive me and my oldest daughter will take over for her after I am gone.

She will likely outlive my oldest daughter, too, so my daughter knows that she will need to make arrangements for someone else to take her after my daughter is gone.

They are very smart and very social animals. Huey fortunately has always had a very good life here and has never fallen into some of the neurotic behaviors that some captive birds take on, like feather plucking, screaming or biting. She is always treated respectfully, given affection, fed well and treated like part of the family.

So many birds like this end up in rescue situations because their owners lose interest in them or get old and die or just can't care for them anymore. Or some just decide they no longer want the bird. I feel sad for those birds. They don't ask for that.

Most people don't really realize how long these birds live or how important a social environment is for them.

Anyway, long story. Sorry. you're a good contact if you read all the way to the end here :-)

I just came across this photo I took of her on one of her outdoor perches and decided to share with you.

already but a summer memory

Already from the Bronze Age the oldest frequentation of the area is attested, but the constitution of the first inhabited nucleus is documented around the IX-VIII centuries BC. The early Middle Ages show a wide documentation related to Montescaglioso, which will also touch the Norman domination, with Roberto - nephew of the most famous Guiscardo, progenitor of the Altavilla - as the first Norman feudal lord.

This presence will lead to an important urban development and a significant increase in population. Meanwhile, in addition to the Benedictine Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo (1079), other monasteries are also established.

Allison Park

In the Palisades Interstate Park in New Jersey

After hiking back up the mountain to the Bear Creek Trail, I hiked 2 miles following the trail back down to Forney Creek and back up the Lakeshore Trail to the intersection of the old road leading up to Woody Cemetery, ~a primitive mountaineer cemetery (circa mid 1800's - 1920's). I had already decided on my way in that I would visit, so I swung up to the left on the trail and followed the old road up to the cemetery clearing on top of the mountain.

"That's what the ox from the meat bridge could have told me" is used when an answer to a question is predictable or unsatisfactory.

"I might as well have told that to the ox on the meat bridge" means something like 'talking against a wall'.

Incorporate these two proverbs into your language from time to time and see which of your fellow human beings already know the story behind them. We're sure not too many

...to your dreams

Though I've already used this quote I still think it is a good reminder. But remember as you go through life maybe there are things that you thought would bring you happiness that don't end up doing so. It's ok to shift and let go of old ideas and dream of smaller but deeper and more meaningful ones.

The horse grazing is Molly and she was over 20 years old, sadly she passed away over the summer. She was one of the few horses that I felt comfortable riding. I am very sorry to say that Smokey has also died- a couple of months ago. He was over 30 years old, so I'm just glad that he had a long life. He made a wonderful subject staring at the camera in this shot. My daddy bought him for my little sister to learn to ride on a gentle horse; we had only had him for a few years. Both of these horses were so kind and gentle, and I loved them dearly.
