Day 174 of 365.

My sister-in-law gave us tickets to the holiday concert by the New Century Chamber Orchestra.

The New Century Chamber Orchestra is also known for being a conductor less ensemble. From their website: "Musical decisions are made collaboratively by the 19-member string ensemble, resulting in an enhanced level of commitment on the part of the musicians to concerts of remarkable precision, passion and power."

This is the orchestral equivalent of a holocracy.

It was a beautiful concert with performances by the San Francisco Girls Chorus and David Krakauer playing the clarinet.

Thanks Leni.

Day 356 - 365 Velvet 56 Project

It has been a while since I took the camera to the grocery store. Once I thought I would do a personal project photographing the grocery store. What was I thinking!? I strongly dislike the grocery store.

a regular monday.

running for the bus,

Why am I holding a sign with the number 11 on it? 11 is the number of pounds I've lost since January 3, 2013! What am I doing? Well, I took a step back at the end of last year and decided to refocus my weight loss efforts. I had put some weight back on without really trying (an unfortunate side effect of the autoimmune disease I have - Hashimoto's thyroiditis). I also discussed this all with my endocrinologist and learned that on top of the thyroid problem (which we are working on balancing), I also have hypoglycemia. The only way to really control this is to go on a low glycemic index diet. Around the same time that I was finding all of this out, a colleague of mine started talking about this book he read and diet that he was following. It was written by a cardiologist in Palm Springs (Dr. Gundry), who at one time was obese himself. It's all about how to eat to lose weight, get healthy, and avoid seeing him for heart problems. The basic premise of the diet is progressively going back to what humans ate thousands of years ago when we were still hunters/gatherers...before the bulk of our food became so processed. It's so much more than a diet book, though. Dr. Gundry talks about how we are genetically programmed to eat whatever has the most calories and can find the fastest (i.e. the fattiest, most sugar-laden foods), which isn't necessarily the best thing for our waistlines. There are even hidden sugars in many of the foods we eat - namely corn, which most processed foods contain some form of. Just by nature, this is a low glycemic index diet, and it doesn't make you count calories, points, fat grams, etc. My travel schedule is so amazingly hectic right now, I needed something easy, and this seemed like just the ticket. Dr. Gundry walks you through what to eat, what to avoid, and what to eat only in moderation. He gives tips on what to eat when you're in an airport or if the only thing available is McDonalds. I basically just eat lots of veggies, some meats, nuts (raw and unsalted), and some fruits. And you know what? I feel MUCH better eating this way. After a month, I'm finally getting to the point where I don't really crave sugar anymore...berries are PLENTY sweet on their own without any sweetener whatsoever. Here's hoping the number on my little sign keeps going up, and the pounds keep going down! If you are interested, the book can be found here:

My daughter found this on the beach and kept it as treasure - it is covered in these beautiful crystals and shimmers in the light. We are keeping it for her fairy garden which we will make when the weather gets a little better. But for now it can remind us of our special place - the beach x

Looking a bit messier than usual. Since tomorrow is my furlough day, I am trying to clear off all the paperwork.

BTW I was alone in the office when I took this photo as everyone else was at lunch (my favorite time of the day!).

Winding all the yarn tonight! For those who aren't into knitting, sometimes yarn comes in "hank" form, which means it's basically a big loop of yarn. What this also means is that you can't start knitting it until it has been wound into a ball. Otherwise, you end up with a big tangled mess. I learned this the hard way when I first started getting into fancy yarn (the kind that comes in hanks) - I think William is still scarred from the experience of having to help me untangle yard upon yard of alpaca yarn. *shudder* Anyway, the yarn gets wound into these little "cake" looking things pictured here by using a ball winder and swift. A swift looks like the insides of an umbrella and holds the big loop of yarn open and spins while it's being wound into a ball. A ball winder basically works the same way a fishing reel does, and it's what makes the "cakes" to keep the yarn tidy. By the way, you don't have to have a ball winder and swift to wind yarn - you just need someone willing to hold the yarn in a big loop over their arms while you wind it by hand....but that takes much longer, and the person holding the yarn usually gets cranky because their arms get tired ;)

For those wondering, the yarns from left to right are as follows:

-Zen Yarn Garden Serenity 20 in a special one-of-a-kind colorway for Simply Socks Yarn sitting on top of my handspun Hello Yarn Turkey Attack

-Stonehedge Fiber Mill Shepherd's Wool in gray sitting on top of my handspun Hello Yarn Night Gathers

-2 skeins of Zen Yarn Garden Serenity 20 in another special one-of-a-kind colorway for Simply Socks Yarn

Most of this will be used to make gifts :) Off to knit!!

293.365 - October 20, 2013 - Relaxing Sunday afternoon. My wife was wearing a cool shirt today so I convinced her to pose for me once again. She's such a good sport about my constant pleas to pose for me! (Most of the time ha ha!)

worked for 11 hours today so here I am in bed at 9pm

354.365 - December 20, 2013 - Had a nice evening shopping with my wife tonight. I know, what could be nice about shopping this time of year?? Maybe it was because we weren't actually trying to buy anything and as such didn't have to stand in any lines. Anyway, after we got home I convinced her to be my model again for today's photo. I told her only her hands with the mug would be in the shot, but in the end I liked this one better than any of those. Sorry honey!
