This little guy is a Räuchermann (literally translated, smoking man). He is a traditional incense smoker from Germany. They have been around in German homes at Christmas since the 19th century. The way that it works is you get these tiny incense cones, open him up, put one in his belly, light it, and then he blows the fragrance and smoke out of his mouth (hence, the pipe). There are several different styles of Räuchermenschen that are handmade and sold all over Germany around Christmas time at the Weinachtsmarkt (Christmas Market). A Christmas Market is just like what it sounds - an outdoor market right around Christmas time that has mulled wine, other cute wooden ornaments, etc. for sale. Just about every German town has one.
I studied abroad in Germany my junior year in college (12 years ago now O_o), and my mom came to visit for Christmas. We went to the most famous Weinachtsmarkt in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and I bought a Räuchermann for my aunt and uncle. They loved it! However, I've always kind of regretted not getting one to keep as well (ahh, well, I was still in college and didn't have a place of my own). Imagine my surprise when visiting Stillwater, MN yesterday (see the 17/365 pics), I saw a Käthe Wohlfahrt store. This store is like a year-round Christmas Market in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and we definitely visited it while I studied there. I had no idea that they also had one here in the states. At any rate, I knew I needed to rectify the situation and go get myself a Räuchermann. So, this little guy came home with me. I love his hat with the little pine cone as well as the squirrel.

I ride my bike past the The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Oakland every day from work.
Tonight, the lights were on so I asked the members if I could go inside and take some pictures.
It was built in 1900 and was the first Church of Christ, Scientist built west of the Mississippi river.
This Church’s address is 1701 Franklin Street in Oakland. There’s another Church in San Francisco at 1700 Franklin Street.
“I’ve always wondered if that was a coincidence,” the parishioner told me.
Sunday February 14th will be the last service here. The Church has been sold and now will be a clothing store called Jeremy’s.

What did I do today? I went with Phyllis to try on potential bridesmaid dresses. And what was in the dressing room? A cart of jewelry and Jimmy Choos. Oh and dresses, but whatever.
I felt I needed to have this moment documented, because I'm wearing $1000 worth of stuff right now (the shoes are the most expensive!! and the most comfortable) I'm not often a gushy girl about things. Today, I am.
I said "Hello Lover" to the shoes. It was emotional.
I thought her pose looked very formal and this large wicker chair looked like a throne so therefore it goes with the wannabe princess set.

I didn’t take this photo, but when I looked up and saw the shutter snapping I thought, this is my photo for today. I don’t know why.
I had higher hopes for this one but I didnt get a frame I loved and I am not killing another HDD to try. For the record, this is a 20gb laptop HDD from 3 generations ago.... has been long retired. If you get nothing else out of this, please backup your photos today... this happens to ALL drives eventually. Hope all is well 338

Blue Bottles
Another grey, wet day here so played around with these three bottles on a windowsill with a sheet over the window. I really must invest in some proper lighting equipment!
Today we took 100 steps from the car to our front row seats at our son's wedding where we gained a beautiful new daughter-in-love! ❤️
I haven't been focusing on photography lately. It's all for good reasons, but I still am bummed that my camera has barely been used since I've moved. I do have to say that I am really enjoying my life these days. This change of pace has been perfect for me and my family and I have waaaaay more great days than not so great days. So, even though I've lost focus, it's all good.
