I hadn’t hung out with Colin in a while so we grabbed Raman a few days after I moved out. We plotted for a get together and as it turned out his brother had had the same idea. After a round robin of names and favourite colours I explained my project to a new group of strangers, some recognizing that I took Colin’s photo earlier this year. Margo volunteered and so I took the worst photo I could of her. Frankly I think it’s quite funny, and of the shots I showed her she said this’d be fine. I suppose we’ll see her reaction.

Class 310/0. EMU unit 087, later called 310087, in full blue livery with the Driving Trailer Compo leading approaches Watford Junction in June 1973. The 2 rather dirty freight cars on the left make for an interesting comparison with current day vehicles.
CN 2939 leads a very late CN 310 over the recently rehabbed Beaurepaire crossing in Beaconsfield about 20 seconds before CN 327 occupied the same crossing.

The last ten years lots of joint venture companies between Chinese domestic and international carmakers have popped up in mainland China, as the Chinese government sort of requires foreign-invested joint ventures to develop in return for approvals to expand production capacity on the lucrative Chinese market. Usually foreign carmakers dump their oldest models in those car brands, because they don't want to share their latest platforms and technology with the Chinese companies. So far we've seen brands like Baojun (SAIC-GM-Wuling), Venucia (Dongfeng-Nissan), Ciimo (Dongfeng-Honda), Everus (Guangqi Honda), Horki (Dongfeng-Yueda-Kia), Denza (BYD Daimler), Zinoro (BMW Brilliance), Ranz (FAW-Toyota), Kaili (FAW-Volkswagen).
Some of these brands have already been discontinued and only two brands are successful: Baojun and to a lesser extent Venucia. Baojun. Baojun started in 2011 with a sedan based on the Buick Excelle (Daewoo Lacetti/Nubira) platform, the 630 and sales really took off when it launched the 730, an MPV slotting above the Wuling Hongguang-range. In 2016 Baojun sold over 370,000 examples of this MPV. In 2015 it launched the 560, the brand's first SUV. It was yet another sales hit with over 320,000 units in 2016. In 2016 Baojun sold more than 760,000 cars.
The Baojun 310 was launched in 2016 and is a runaway hit. It's not hard to see why, since it looks good and is incredibly cheap, with prices starting at 36,800 RMB. Competitors on price include the BYD F0 (from 37,900 RMB), Changan Benben (from 44,900 RMB), Chery QQ (from 37,900 RMB), FAW Xiali N5 (from 36,900 RMB), Geely Vision X1 (from 39,900 RMB), JAC Refine S2 mini (from 39,800 RMB), Suzuki Alto (from 41,800 RMB) and Venucia R30 (from 39,900 RMB), which are all much smaller except for the Xiali. Size-wise it competes with the Chery Fulwin 2 (from 42,900 RMB), FAW Xiali N7 (from 48,900 RMB), Geely King Kong (from 43,900 RMB), Senova D20 (from 48,800 RMB) and the brand new Korean budget sedans: Hyundai Reina (from 49,900 RMB) and Kia Pegas (also from 49,900 RMB).
