Our mouth of the Fraser River walk started at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and this life size bronze sculpture - Steveston Legacy.

The iconic Steveston Legacy statues have stood in front of the Cannery since 2009.

Description of Work:

The artwork contains three figures in a typical scene from Steveston in the 30’s. An elderly fisherman sits on a mending bench, talking to a female Japanese cannery worker and a young dock worker on a coffee break. The life-sized bronze figures are at ground level, allowing for interaction and contemplation.

Artist Statement:

Steveston's Legacy, designed by Norm Williams, was conceived as a Steveston Legacy project by the Steveston High School Alumni Association.

The artwork is three figures representing a typical 1930’s fishing industry scenario on the docks. It consists of an older fisher sitting on a bench mending a net and telling a story to a young male dockworker and a cannery worker on her break.

The intention is to represent the ethnic, gender, and age diversity of the industry pre-WWII.

The life-size statue is cast bronze, 3-dimensional and is in a realism style that allows visitors to interact and easily understand the ‘story’.

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is a National Historic Site of Canada.

The cannery opened in 1894, in the boomtown of Steveston on the lower Fraser River. It was the largest cannery in British Columbia until 1902.

By 1979, the cost of operating the Cannery's aging reduction equipment became too much and the plant was closed.

The Federal government purchased the property and in 1984 it was transferred to Parks Canada. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society, a local not-for-profit organization, was formed in 1986 to work together with Parks Canada to develop and operate the site.

The building was first open to the public in 1994 in celebration of the centennial of the building.

Today, the Cannery is one of the few federally owned National Historic Sites operated by a third party.

We spent the day in the beautiful Cold Creek, just outside of Las Vegas Nevada. We had a great day of photography. We created images of a wild horse, a dragonfly, and a beautiful sunset, with a cool juniper tree in the foreground.

This large urban lot in False Creek Flats, downtown Vancouver is the location for the new St. Paul’s Hospital.

Construction began 08 March 2021 and occupancy will be in 2027.

Gonna post shots one a month as the development progresses and here is one for APRIL, 2021.

Construction material and site office space is beginning to arrive.

The row of green trees at the top of the site are European Hornbeams, one of my favourite Vancouver large street trees. The background water is Burrard Inlet.

The photos will display collectively in the album “2021 - Vancouver - New St. Paul's”.
