My mother always made old-fashioned savouries on every occasion.

They were always the first food people reached for - and there were never any leftover!

I like to continue the tradition - and there are still no leftovers :)

From the archives - January 2021 at Hager Park.

If one (or more) walk through Oppenheimer Park in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, this yellow building on the north side of Powell Street may draw your attention.

It’s more eye catching in bright mid day sun.

It's Vancouver so of course the graffiti vandals are active.

Trans Am Totem sculpture, installed in 2015, is gone to rehab.

The Trans Am at the top of the Totem was removed separately. The four below were removed in one operation.

From top to bottom, the vehicles are a Pontiac Trans Am, BMW 7 Series, Honda Civic, Volkswagen Golf Mk1 Cabriolet, and Mercedez-Benz, all donated by a local scrapyard.

Fleurs de Villes ROSÉ was a floral trail supporting breast cancer research that adorned downtown Vancouver with over 50 displays June 11 – 20.

Here are 7 of the floral entry’s.

The displays were hosted by the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association and Robson Street Business Association.

15 November the south of the province of British Columbia and northern Sate of Washington were walloped by an unprecedented violent storm with lots of wind and rain.

The 3 roads that connect BC to the neighbouring province of Alberta were closed due to slides and destroyed bridges. The primary highway from Vancouver to the interior will not reopen until mid January.

The destruction was widespread.

This barge grounded at Vancouver's Sunset Beach during the storm. A plan to unground the barge is a work in progress.

The barge was one of nearly two dozen vessels set adrift by the storm according to the Canadian Coast Guard.

The barge owner, Sentry Marine planned to remove it on Dec. 6 during a king tide. Dec. 6 came and went, and the barge is still aground.

"Removing the barge will be a complex undertaking due to its size, its location and the potential effects of water and weather conditions on the removal," according to a City of Vancouver spokesperson.

Attempts were made to remove the barge with a tugboat shortly after the storm, but it wasn't up to the task.

Transport Canada has said there is no threat of pollution from the empty barge used to transport wood chips.

Since running aground, the barge quickly became a part of Vancouver lore, inspiring memes, parody on social media accounts and it attracts lots of onlookers daily .

Some suggestions - container based social housing, restaurant (McBarge), mural wall, tourist attraction called Barge Chilling Park, Barge on the Beach (Bard on the Beach), decorate it with festive lighting.

Jardin de Santiago is a botanical garden adjacent to the Templo de Santiago Tlatelolco at Plaza de las Tres Culturas.

The monastery kept a garden here since the mid-16th century. The garden is home 62 species. Of these, only 11 are native to Mexico City.

The current park was designed by Mario Pani.

Pani took charge of the park in 1960 as part of the overall plan for his Nonoalco Tlatelolco Urban Complex. The garden was integral to the overall project.

A stone balustrade surrounds the garden. On the southern edge, a wide stretch of sidewalk keeps traffic on R. Flores Magón at a distance so the park is very quiet.

A view of Mt. Baker from White Rock's Royal Avenue above Cypress Street.

Mt Baker, 50 km east of Bellingham, Washington and 23 km south of the Canada-USA border, is the northernmost of Washington State volcanoes.

A 10,777 ft. stratovolcano, Baker has been active during the last centuries, but has been in repose for more than 130 years.

Sherman Crater, the historically active crater immediately south of the summit, started to emit steam in 1975, but no other signs suggest a reawakening in the near future.

Heightened fumarole activity has continued since the 1970s, but there are no other signs of renewed volcanism.

Monitoring and research into the history, eruptive potential, and landslide hazard potential at Mount Baker are ongoing.

THE NAME:

Mt. Baker has had many names over the centuries.

Before the arrival of Europeans it was known as Koma Kulshan, meaning "Great White Watcher."

The first European name for the volcano comes from the maps of Spanish mariner Gonzalo Lopez de Haro who labeled the mountain "La Gran Montana del Carmelo" in 1790.

The modern nomenclature, came in 1792, when Joseph Baker, third-lieutenant to English Captain George Vancouver on the British ship Discovery, spied the mountain while in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Cherry blossoms on 10th Avenue at Windsor Street were at their peak this day.

The cherry blossom season is relatively short. Full bloom (mankai) is usually reached within about one week after the opening of the first blossoms (kaika).

A week later, the blooming peak is over and the blossoms are falling from the trees. Strong wind and rain can cut the blooming season even shorter.

Vancouver is home to 40,000+ cherry trees, that burst into pink and white blooms between February and May.

54 different varieties of flowering cherry trees that can be found in Vancouver neighbourhoods.

In the early 1930s the mayors of Kobe and Yokohama presented Vancouver Park Board with 500 Japanese cherry trees to plant at the Japanese cenotaph in Stanley Park honouring Japanese Canadians who served in WWI.

The impact of the cherry tree plantings began to reshape the city’s landscape, Vancouverites were soon smitten by their fleeting beauty, their clouds of blossoms, as they heralded spring’s arrival each year.

By the 1950s, many large trees on city streets, were being removed and replaced because of problems with roots and canopies, and the move away from the large, long-lived trees of earlier plantings intensified.

In 1953 the News Herald reported that “elms, maples and other plain(sic) trees were on the way out as decoration for Vancouver’s streets and parks.

The article explained that at the annual meeting of the Northwest Parks Association, Bill Livingstone, the Vancouver Park Board Supervisor at the time, announced that in their place, Park Board gardeners were planting flowering plum, cherry and crab apple trees.

Livingstone explained the smaller ornamental trees “give better value in colour and decorative effect, but also saved damage to pavements and sewers.”

The introduction of ornamental street lighting was also sited by Mr. Livingstone for the move to flowering, smaller trees as they averaged about 20-25 feet in height.

By the time the Park Board completed its first comprehensive street tree inventory in 1990, nearly 36 percent of the 89,000 trees on city streets were represented by trees of the Prunus genus—the flowering plum and cherry trees.

Through the implementation of the Park Board’s urban forest management plan, the street tree population has increased to over 130,000.

Though the Park Board continues to plant the beloved flowering cherry trees in high profile areas around the city and in our parks, the introduction of a broader variety of species will ensure Vancouver has a healthy, vibrant urban forest well into the future.

If you caught yesterdays post, (Pig Picks plus), there was a hint of a change up coming and here it is.

If you think this could be a Mexican ceramic piece, you are right - another tea light candle holder.

And it's time for our annual visit to the beautiful country. Hopefully not to buy anything ceramic, unless - - -.

We rode Metro Line #1 to station Pino Suárez on our way to check out pedestrian street Calle Regina.

A Day of the Dead display was tucked into one corner of the station underground.

The display may be a protest message not familiar to me.

The background photos and explanation panels are from the station construction.

A pyramid dedicated to Ehecatl, the Aztec god of wind is located here.

The pyramid was discovered during construction of the station.

The pyramid is on display along the station transfer corridor.

The station was opened on 5 September 1969.

I am currently doing a "color of the month" photo project where I take a picture focusing on one specific color during the month. July is red...so this matched very well...HSoS!
