a short story in December 2021 (so far)
Of a time unknown on a Saturday this December an ambulance is called to Betty and Norm’s home in a village north west, inland off the Pacific Ocean at the foot of the Blue Mountains, of this island we call Australia.
“Norm has been unwell for a few days” Betty says this early Sunday afternoon calling from her mobile phone at the local hospital. I’m not surprised by her delayed call. The day after Dad was rushed to emergency. As I pause in silence, knowing her attempted provocation of an emotional response. She continues, “I didn’t want to disturb you yesterday.”
Four days from now, Julian’s observations in a text message unravel in me suppressed memories. “this whole thing kinda leaves one speechless. It’s such a negative and destructive game she’s playing.”
In the background we hear another voice speaking. Betty’s devoted granddaughter explaining all the tests Norm is about to endure. “Pop” says Angie “will have a chest X-ray, a CT scan, including an endoscopic and gastroscope procedure.
I turn on the speaker and up the volume of my mobile as the echo of Angie‘s voice almost harmonises with Betty’s repeating word of word. This provides us a moment to quickly decide we’ll journey a visit of support on Wednesday.
I ask a question, “Do you know if there are any restrictions for hospital visits?”
We hear Angie’s voice again “two double vac adults per day for a patient visit only permitted.” With a strange gentleness of tone my Mother, Betty struggles in her attempt to explain.
“Send Norm our love and best wishes, please Betty” Julian out of genuine empathy contributes, “we’ll visit on Wednesday if that works for you?”
“Yes I will” abruptly she replies completing this burden of connection, with me, her ‘after-thought’ the son of shame.
As we will discover this week, becoming hostage to the ascension of Betty’s power, through a crazed control of withholding Dad’s medical diagnosis’s as I’m not registered as their ‘next of Kin’.

We had not one, but TWO opportunities to explore the amazing ruins of Machu Picchu, Peru. The Incan town from the 1400s is being excavated and rebuilt by archeologists--- amazing engineering and use of precise terracing on the steep mountain slopes.
Zoom if you wish to see more details of the buildings and the carving of the rock blocks.
We were fortunate to be able to travel once more, and this was a huge bucket list trip--- Peru and Ecuador, with highlights of visits to the rainforest, Machu Picchu, and the Galapagos Islands. Lots more photos to come in the upcoming weeks.....

Il réalise la premiere voie directe de l’éperon Walker des Grandes Jorasses. Il donne le nom à cette voie « La Voie Goussault aux Grandes Jorasses » en hommage à son compagnon Serge Goussault mort d’épuisement à quelques dizaines de mètre du sommet.

He makes the first direct route of the Walker spur of the Grandes Jorasses. He gives the name to this route «La Voie Goussault aux Grandes Jorasses» in homage to his companion Serge Goussault who died of exhaustion a few tens of meters from the summit.

Mohamd Ibrahim, now with Parisian beret, moved to Kensington. He practiced his craft for several years in another popular area of the city. His school year now finished, he is back in business. Let's hope the tourist will come soon and boost his bottom line. Mohamd, who is now about 15 years old, is of Sudanese descent. Few weeks ago I've uploaded a photo from different encounter with him. Mohamd goes also by the name Nile Paints and started to paint on Dundas Square since about age 11.

Some minutes of solitude.
At the arrival of spring, it is more common to see solitary specimens or small groups on the shores of Gansbaai. It is a pleasure to see them frolicking and playing or hunting in the Kelp forests. Unfortunately a couple of days ago I located a very recently dead specimen on the rocks at low tide; I did not observe any wound and it had no signs of disease, but I did see another very thin specimen another day; lack of food? any disease?

CONTAX TVSと陽光こぼれる雲間とセンザキッチンのデッキ
いつものセンザキッチンのデッキから見た風景だ。
10時過ぎくらいで今頃だとまだ朝っぽい雰囲気だ。陽光が雲間からこぼれて幻想的にも思える風景が広がっていた。トンビが飛び交う様子が結構幻想的にも見えた。この写真ではかなり小さくしか写ってはいないが。石灰を積み出すためのベルトコンベアーの積み出し口も見えている。もっと暗い感じでより良い感じの写真やもうちょっとリアルに近い写真もあるのだけれど、雲と風景の見え方のバランスで選んでみた。実際問題として肉眼で見た雰囲気とは結構異なった写真ではある。目で見た印象はここまで暗くは感じなかったと思う。

午前中、カミサンと散歩。セブンイレブンで昼食を買った後、スポーツ公園で8人制サッカーの試合を遠く見ながら、見晴らしの良い東屋で昼食。深川川は竹で見えないが、なかなか眺めが良い公園の中の東屋だ。その後、8人制サッカーを観戦したりした後、ゆめマートで買い物をして帰宅。途中、板持川の橋のあたりで、CONTAX G1、Planar 45mm、escura Negative Film Vintage 400で何枚か撮った。その後はNHKで天皇杯準決勝を適当に見続けている。

CONTAX G1と林道を行く
露出が奥の林にあったので全体がアンダー気味になった。
写真としてはどうかとも思うけれど、逆になかなか雰囲気は出てき感じだ。林に露出があった写真も撮ったし、そちらもなかなかいいので迷ったが、あえて人がシルエットになっている方を選んでみた。自分で写真を撮る前は、写真の著作物性とかよくわかっていなかったのだけれど、同じようなテーマでも、構図、露出、選択、トリミング、加工とかを考えるとまったく異なった写真になるのがようやく理解できるようになった。
板持川の上流に向かって平行する林道をさかのぼってみた時の一コマだ。本格的なトレッキングとかではなくただの散歩である。林道が整備されていることはもちろん、田舎では珍しく林も整備され、間伐材がまとめてあったりした。なかなかいい雰囲気なので、今度はお弁当を持ってさかのぼってみたいものだ。

午後から、スポーツ公園経由でスーパーマーケットに寄った買い物散歩。途中、Olympus XA2、FUJICOLOR SUPERIA PREMIUM 400で風景を撮ったりした。昨日現像から上がってきた写真は、CONTAX G1で撮った林に積もった雪がいい感じなのだけれど、フィルム1本がほとんど同じような写真で逆にどれを選んだらいいのかがよくわからない。
枻出版社が実質倒産らしいので、迷っていたCAMERA PARADISE Vol. 1を購入してきた。他に電書の方が便利と思いつつ、地元書店のために技術要塞戦艦大和3、林譲治著を購入。

Most of my shots are taken in and around the city of Molde. Molde is the second largest city in the county of Møre og Romsdal, lies along the shores of the Romsdalsfjord in Western Norway.
The official, and also most common, nickname for Molde is The City of Roses or Rose City.
As you explore the city, you will see why it was given its nickname. In the city center you will find rose gardens, parks, statues, and murals all paying homage to the iconic flower. Even the town hall roof has a rose garden and is accessible to all! Decorative gardening has been popular in Molde for many generations and adds to the city’s beauty and charm.

14 May 2021: More than 40% of the adult population in Belgium have already received their first coronavirus vaccine jab and in a couple of hours from now I’m one of them. While the number of people testing positive for the virus remains more or less stable at a level that is still very high, the significant fall in the number of COVID-19 patients being cared for in the country’s hospitals continues. There are 657 patients being treated in intensive care for Covid-19 and a total of 2,024 people hospitalised with a coronavirus infection, a fall of 18% compared with a week ago. During the week from 4 to 10 May an average of 2,852 people in Belgium tested positive for the coronavirus each day this figure is down 4% on the average for the previous week. The reproduction number continues to stand at 0.91. With the vaccination campaign moving at full speed, everybody is hoping that the dark and rainy days are over. Let’s hope that the Indian mutation of the virus doesn’t spoil the party. Therefore, all eyes are now on the UK, and the progress of the Indian mutation, which is much more present there than it is here. On display today is the skyline of Ghent from the Museum of Industry – Ghent, Belgium.
