At the zoo in Santa Barbara, testing a lens. In a moment of oh well, I can't schlep it or hold it easily, but it is so sharp. I tossed back and forth and bought it. What was I thinking? Someone will buy it back. Steve? Okay not Steve. He sees government bailouts.

It's been a while since we've posted a 35mm shot here. We tend to show a lot of love to medium format and instant film (for obvious reasons) but Michelle's trusty 35mm has been known to produce some sweet flare+grain action! Taken in possibly our new favourite shoot location.
Taken on the Nikon EM + Kodak Ektar 100.

Acclaimed First Nations musician/songwriter/activist, Buffy Sainte-Marie, performed at Toronto's outdoor Dundas Square last night, a free concert presented by Thunderbird Aboriginal Arts Centre. Fabulous!! At 70 years of age, the talented '60's Canadian icon seethed with energy (she played for close to 2 hours non-stop) , passion & generosity of spirit. Playing guitar & keyboard with her band, she offered all her greats, including the Academy Award winning "Up Where We Belong ( a huge hit for Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warrens on the soundtrack of the movie "An Officer & a Gentleman), the powerful "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" & 'Universal Soldier' the anti- war song that got her black-listed from the US airwaves in the '70's for being ' too radical'. She's back! Big time! In the midst of a world tour, gathering accolades from both press & fans, and her message for peace & a kinder world stronger than ever. Thank you, Buffy!!

Bank Hotel and Radisson Blu, Royal mile Edinburgh.
The Royal Mile is the name given to a succession of streets forming the main thoroughfare of the Old Town of the city of Edinburgh in Scotland. The name was first used in W M Gilbert's Edinburgh in the Nineteenth Century (1901), and was further popularised as the title of a guidebook, published in 1920.

Just realized I haven't added the Gotham look to a photo taken in the real Gotham City. Figured this was a good one to do it on to get things going!
Sally Lightfoot Crab,
It is one of the many charismatic species that inhabit the Galápagos Islands, and is often seen in photos of the archipelago.
Notice the 'spitting' from his 'mouth' .... This is actually the crab expelling salt water from his exoskeleton.

The classic features of a Great Smoky Mountains National Park river landscape were all present at this location along the Roaring Fork Motor Trail just outside of Gatlinburg TN. I was thrilled to see the lush green foliage along this section of the river. The vibrant greens on the moss covered rocks in this location seemed to be to good to be real, and I immediately felt like I had stepped into some sort of fairy tale land when I first saw it. This image was shot while leading my recent Spring in the Smoky Mountains landscape photography workshop. Click the image to view it large! Hope you enjoy it, comments welcome! ;-)

My wife and I had an interesting conversation in the car about what happens to us after we die… she said she wanted to come back as a wave, and I that just struck me as a very, very beautiful statement. I just smiled at her, but thought about it for at least the next couple of hours in the car, and actually a lot since then.

Good morning everyone and I hope you had a nice weekend. Featured today for Butterfly Monday is a short series on the Hackberry Emperor (Asterocampa celtis). In general it's been a good year for Hackberrys, which seemed to have bounced back compared to a lot of other species of butterflies after the drought of 2012.
As for these photos, the first two in the comment section are of the same butterfly seen above, the last two are of different butterflies. While I'm not a fan of ground shots for butterflies, Hackberrys spend a lot of time on the ground feeding. It's extremely rare to see one feeding on a flower, which I explain in the comment section.
I hope you enjoy this series on this pretty butterfly, and as always, don't forget to click on "more comments" if you don't see the additional pics in the comment section. And if you want to view any picture in the field of black or comment section large all you have to do is click on it.
Thank you for stopping by...and I hope you have a truly great day and week.

The first day in the Park the clouds obscured El Capitan. Photogs standing about complained about clouds camera left. Hey clouds can only add drama to this view. I am not complaining.

I met Melissa at a show this spring, and she was one of the models for the 2012 Threads shoot I did this summer. Melissa is an amazing model, and a wonderful photographer herself! She helped me with a shoot I did with The Summer Set yesterday afternoon, and this was a test shot that I told her I'd send her :) I don't like the white street lights behind her head (I would have rather her been more towards the center of the sidewalk), but again, it was just a test shot.

Smoke art abstract.
Been playing with actions in photoshop. I recorded two that takes the selection, transforms it, changes the blending mode to lighten and rotates by either 20º or 30º. It means I can create subtly varying wheels in seconds, a real time saver.

The volunteer-run museum tells the story of the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (Militia) - from the starting point in 1539 - in the reign of Henry VIII. This was before firearms were in general use - and before there was a Regular Army. It is now in the Territorial Army - is the only regiment to have survived from the Militia - and is the Senior Regiment of the Reserve Army.
