Another visit to the greenhouses at the University of Northern Iowa here in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Outside: a not too cold, blue sky winter's day. Inside: dry desert heat. I am intrigued by viewing 2 different climate zones simultaneously. Through the glass, a leafless deciduous tree is seen above an adjoining Quonset hut shaped greenhouse. January 4, 2012

Here's an image I shot way back in 2008 that's been reprocessed. Both the Photomatix software and my processing knowledge have improved since then, so I figured it was time for another stab at it. I anticipate doing this some day with all my images, which is why I always save my raw files.
Flickr's update a few years ago also rendered images before February 2012 unable to be viewed in full-screen mode, so that's another incentive to repost my old favs.
Many more to come.

I could write a book about this building and things that have gone on here. The image was taken in the entrance to the park opposite, so I could stand back far enough to at least show the second floor and up. It currently has a tall fence surrounding the building during the conversion works (see below).
This is Friday Hill House; built in 1839 it replaced a country manor house in about 160 acres of farmland on the site. From 1839 to 1940 it remained in the Boothby-Heathcote family, when the last remaining member of the family died.
After the second world war the Friday Hill housing estate was built on most of the land. The main building became a community centre, and in addition to its role during the day, many of the local groups or clubs - from dancing to model railway – met up here on different evenings, or had their own rooms. It was put up for sale in 2012 and is I understand being converted to residential use as flats/apartments. The groups are now spread across the area in different venues. I’m not sure the conversion is going at any great rate as this image from July 2017 shows, although no doubt there is a reason.
It is alleged to have two ghosts, a man (I’ve never met anyone who has claimed to see him) and a weeping lady with a veil (I know of her as the grey lady) and over the years I’ve known or met people who have claimed to see her. I almost met her myself in the early 1980s, but that’s too much of a story for here.
The hill was originally called Jackett Hill, and it takes the name Friday Hill from John Friday who acquired the land later in the 15th century.
the recent gift of a black-tailed deer skull got me thinking about the various nature ephemera i have accumulated around the house over the years. it was fun to bring some of the bigger bits out on the table and have a look at things.

The special stage of "Kyoto Fan" that performed by maiko Fukunae and Geiko Miehina is one of the most wonderful Maiko's Odiri performance I have ever seen. Mood in the theater, talking by maiko and geiko, and explanation by M.C were all excellent. It was free charge, the purpose of holding this performance is to show the traditional culture of Kyoto to people in the world.

I would like to thank the Urbanphotomag for inviting me to take part in their Empty Streets project. You can see my shots HERE and an offtake above.
The Shot
This one is down to one of my contacts, Andrew. In a comment on the original version he said “Great work, that sky looks like your entering the atmosphere” true I thought and why not but the Orbit Tower in Earth Orbit and this shot is the result.
This is an edited shot of the ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower in front of the Olympic Stadium. Taken with a fisheye lens which produced that curved look to the sky. See the post before last for the original.
I started by doing a round selection on the picture for the Earth leaving an area on the edges for Space. The area on the edges was brushed with a black brush which involved some delicate brushwork for the areas round the struts. The stars started from original pictures of stars I took earlier layered and brightened and star effects added. This was then pasted as a new layer, a black layer mask used to remove it and a white brush on the layer used to bring in the stars on the areas of Space.
The top of a communications pole on the original image was moved and enlarged to make a passable International Space Station in a slightly lower orbit.

Emory and I are so much alike it's frightening. Born just one day apart [but different year of course] we both share a passion for animals, the outdoors and photography. I've shared 12+ years of his 80 years together as husband and wife and hope he lives to be well into his 90's. It was a bit of a worrisome Spring when he had heart surgery [ valve replacement] but he is now going stronger and faster than ever.
I'll be the designated photographer at our family get together today so won't have time for Flickr. See you tomorrow.

Happy spring to all my friends and contacts here on Flickr. Feels great to be out in the wilds again wielding a camera. There is a series of images of native Californian plants that follows. They were taken with a pocket camera using the auto setting.... have never done that... and now I know why. Hard to get a great shot, but more about documenting the moment quickly on the hiking trail.
California Poppies are an upright, compact annual or tender perennial native to California and the southwestern United States. Extremely drought tolerant and ideal for arid environments and drought tolerant landscapes. The brilliant orange, cup-shaped flowers, are 2 - 4 inches in diameter, borne individually on long stalks. Seen here the more common orange flowering variety growing alongside a less common red flowering hybrid in a garden bed. California Poppies prefer full sun planted in light to sandy soils. The plants are symmetrically uniform and tidy in appearance. Not hardy below 20F.
Eschscholzia californica is the official state flower of California. Although it is toxic to humans, its roots are favored by gophers. Widely planted in North America and elsewhere as an ornamental, roadside, and reclamation plant. Native Americans used Eschscholzia californica to treat lice, to induce sleep in children, as a poison, for consumption, for toothaches, and as an emetic (D. E. Moerman 1986).

White-backed Vulture Gyps africanus
This is a vulture in the family Accipitridae, which also includes eagles, kites, buzzards and hawks. It is closely related to the European Griffon.
The White-backed Vulture is a typical vulture, with only down feathers on the head and neck, very broad wings and short tail feathers. It has a white neck ruff. The adult’s whitish back contrasts with the otherwise dark plumage. Juveniles are largely dark. This is a medium-sized vulture; its body mass is 4.2 to 7.2 kilograms (9.3–16 lb), it is 78 to 98 cm (31 to 39 in) long and has a 1.96 to 2.25 m (6 to 7 ft) wingspan.
Like other vultures it is a scavenger, feeding mostly from carcasses of animals which it finds by soaring over savannah. It also takes scraps from human habitations. It often moves in flocks. It breeds in trees on the savannah of west and east Africa, laying one egg. The population is mostly resident.
As it is rarer than previously believed, its conservation status was reassessed from Least Concern to Near Threatened in the 2007 IUCN Red List. In 2012 it was further uplisted to Endangered.
