This is a young Common Dolphin, with his mother in the background. On our way out to Santa Cruz Island, we came across two large pods of dolphins, but one was made entirely of females with calves. Each baby stayed right by its mother, even when they surfed in the wake of our boat. Some of the young ones seemed to be about the size of footballs! I put two images in the comments section; they are at a distance where the size of the baby is easier to evaluate.

I took this photo at 3 pm and by 7 pm all the last caterpillars were gone! No sign of them anywhere. I hope they all crawled off and found a good spot for the winter. I've seen a female swallowtail laying more eggs - maybe we'll get a few more. It's been fun.

This was taken on May 19, 2012 looking across the valley floor from Sentinel Dome at 8122 ft above sea level. This photo is of the upper part of the falls. If you look at this photo in Large ( 1536 X 2048 ) and look to the upper right you can see the switchback trail leading to the falls.

July,2012, Boston

Unlike this Winter, the cold season of 2012-13 brought lots of snow into the northern part of Grand Teton National Park…….these two so touched my heart as they tried to navigate through the snowdrifts to find food.

Back when Leyland Olympians were still in use on the Plymouth to London Megabus service although on this occasion a Transbus Trident had to suffice.

Not sure I would wanted to have travelled on those standard bus seats all the way to London for 6 and a bit hours but there you go, long as you get there!

It is seen picking up outside Plymouth University, for anyone who is familiar with this area it looks very different today!

This Burrowing Owl was captured on Marco Island on 28 January 2012. There are owl burrows all around Marco Island and instead of identifying each one I am giving the location as Tigertail Beach. The burrows I photograph are all within walking distance of Tigertail and there is a map there giving the locations of all the active burrows.

I don't know about the PC version, but the MAC version of that sony photo app is plain terrible. it's slow as hell.

i don't even though if there's ACR support to the RAW files coming from the rx100. gonna hve to find out, because that sony image converter thingie is simply not a good alternative.

Griffon vultures have been used as model organisms for the study of soaring and thermoregulation. The energy costs of level flight tend to be high, prompting alternatives to flapping in larger birds. Vultures in particular utilize more efficient flying methods such as soaring. Compared to other birds, which elevate their metabolic rate to upwards of 16 times their basal metabolic rate in flight, soaring griffon vultures expend about 1.43 times their basal metabolic rate in flight. Griffon vultures are also efficient flyers in their ability to return to a resting heart rate after flight within ten minutes.

As large scavengers, griffon vultures have not been observed to seek shelter for thermoregulation. Vultures use their bald heads as a means to thermoregulate in both extreme cold and hot temperatures. Changes in posture can increase bare skin exposure from 7% to 32%. This change allows for the more than doubling of convective heat loss in still air. Griffon vultures have also been found to tolerate increased body temperatures as a response to high ambient temperatures. By allowing their internal body temperature to change independently of their metabolic rate, griffon vultures minimize their loss of water and energy in thermoregulating. One study in particular (Bahat 1995) found that these adaptations have allowed the Griffon vulture to have one of the widest thermal neutral zones of any bird.

It declined markedly throughout the 19th–20th centuries in much of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, mainly due to direct persecution and "bycatch" from the poisoned carcasses set for livestock predators (Snow and Perrins 1998, Ferguson-Lees and Christie 2001, Orta et al. 2015). In some areas a reduction in available food supplies, arising from changes in livestock management practices, also had an impact (Ferguson-Lees and Christie 2001, Orta et al. 2015). It is very highly vulnerable to the effects of potential wind energy development (Strix 2012) and electrocution has been identified as a threat (Global Raptors Information Network 2015). Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used for veterinary purposes pose a threat to this species. One case of suspected poisoning caused by flunixin, an NSAID, was recorded in this species in 2012 in Spain (Zorrilla et al. 2015). Diclofenac, a similar NSAID, has caused severe declines in Gyps vulture species across Asia.

Follow these tips to avoid compressing the spinal discs or straining your lower back when you are lifting:

1. Keep a wide base of support.

2. Squat down, bending at the hips and knees only. ...

3. Keep good posture. ...

4. Slowly lift by straightening your hips and knees (not your back).

Back pain is one of the most common conditions reported by adults across Europe. In fact, it is estimated that half of the European population will suffer back pain at some time in their lives and in excess of a third of the European workforce suffer from low back pain. In fact, the latest survey of workers from across the EU suggests that 46% of women and 47% and men reported back pain at some time in the last 12 months. Thus, it is a condition which regularly affects:

14.2m Germans

9.6m Britons

8m French people

6.4m Spaniards

5m Poles

1m Danes.

The neighbourhood is named for both Quidi Vidi Lake (where the Royal St. John's Regatta is held the first Wednesday in August, weather permitting) and Quidi Vidi Harbour - known locally as "The Gut". Located in Quidi Vidi is the Quidi Vidi Battery Provincial Historic Site, which had significance as a battery during the War of 1812. The village is also home to Newfoundland's largest microbrewery, the Quidi Vidi Brewing Company. It has many different types of plants and animals. There are numerous scenic places to visit.

Asia's ascent in the 21st century has been well documented.

I thought this view of Marina Bay Sands in Singapore was a good representation of that, especailly given the 'A' that I have captured as part of the building on the mid right hand side!

Its a subject I have also documented, for example in my lecture in Miami in June 2012, at the World Trends Forum (www.slideshare.net/sammsky/future-trends-forum-2012-final...).

The "pet cam" looks large and bulky but actually it's feather light and after a few minutes, Rusty was used to it~

Pet cam: YouTube. 30 mins. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tdDAfWyW1I&feature=plcp You can cheat when watching the video by moving the dial---I'd skip the first 7 mins.

This is a long and boring video of Rusty roaming around in our cul-de-sac. The first five minutes he just sat and groomed. The last minute or two of the video he was "rolling" in something. The video-cam attaches really well and won't come off.

We were shocked to see on the video that our neighbor had cat food out on their back deck as their cat is mostly indoors. No wonder Rusty hasn't lost weight as we now see that he's been eating their cat food. We saw him encounter a dead squirrel [no --he didn't kill it] and then he spent the longest time under a tree in the cul-de-sac behind us which surprised us as we didn't think he ventured that far.

Disclaimer: "Breakaway" collar is highly recommended when the cam-recorder is attached.

I wish I knew how to edit & shorten video's....but I don't.
