As one of the best looking mines I've found yet in Colorado's backcountry, the Yankee Girl Mine stood out as a spot worth returning to on a recent scouting trip. So with a plan in-mind for some dark night photography, I set out to shoot the Yankee Girl against Milky Way skies. This light painted, stacked, composite image was taken at 4:30 in the morning from a jeep trail off of Red Mountain Pass between Silverton and Ouray, Colorado.

Worth mentioning on the technical side is that I'm really happy with the Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 lens I've started using. As you can see here, there's very little coma effect on the stars in the corners.

Yankee Girl Mine has an amazing history. It started in 1882. A prospector named Mr. Robinson was out hunting and found a rock full of galena on Red Mountain. He found where it came from and found a huge chimney of silver ore. He constructed the Yankee Girl Mine. This was the start of the Red Mountain mining boom. Mr. Robinson sold his mine for $125,000 after one month. The mine has a 1,050 foot vertical shaft. The Yankee Girl shaft house above the mine has a bull wheel and wire for getting out ore. You can still see the shaft house today. At its height, the mine produced ten tons of ore each day. Ore wasn’t sorted because everything was valuable. There was no waste! Each day, a mule train of seventy five mules, each carrying 250 pounds of ore, went to Silverton because they had a train and Ouray didn’t. The mine produced silver, copper, and gold. It made $8,000,000 in its time. There were problems too. Everyone knows when you dig down, water fills up the shaft. So they bought a $30,000 pump to keep the water out, but corrosive water eroded the pump in just one month. This bad water was a major problem at the mine. Guston, a town near the Yankee Girl, had a population of 300 people. Guston had the only church in the Red Mountain mining district. There were two other mines nearby, the Guston Robinson and the Genesee Vanderbuilt. While the boom lasted, the Yankee Girl was the center of attention.

There were apparently only 2,000 monks in 1959.

Ganden Monastery was completely destroyed by the People's Liberation Army during the 1959 Tibetan uprising. In 1966 it was severely shelled by Red Guard artillery, and monks had to dismantle the remains. The buildings were reduced to rubble using dynamite during the Cultural Revolution (1966–76). Most of Tsongkhapa's mummified body was burned, but his skull and some ashes were saved from the fire by Bomi Rinpoche, the monk who had been forced to carry the body to the fire.

Re-building has continued since the 1980s. Early in 1996, after a ban had been imposed on pictures of the Dalai Lama, 400 monks at Ganden rioted. They were fired upon by PLA troops, apparently causing two deaths and several injuries, followed by the arrest of one hundred monks. As of 2012 there were about 400 monks, and rapid progress was being made on rebuilding the monastery. The red-painted lhakang in the centre is the reconstruction of Ganden's sanctum sanctorum containing Tsongkapa's reliquary chorten called the Tongwa Donden, "Meaningful to Behold."

My very first attempt. There is a lot of work involved making these crowns. and a lot of cleaning to do after the splash.

I'm still learning.......... hope to get better at it.

Shoes for Me Again Monday.

A bit early on the Hallowe'en theme I know but I keep thinking I may not be in the mood for it when the time comes! Also none of my pretty shoes fit me right now!! O_O of course except my runners, flip flops, MJs & these massive clunky dressy up MJs that I got in Goodwiil for a potential costume last year. I suddenly remembered over the past few days a series of books I loved when I was about 7 & 8 years old called 'The Worst Witch' and revolved around a character called Mildred Hubble and her misadventures at a witches academy! ^_^

This shot took a lot out of me LOL! It was tough wearing those heels even for ten minutes and plodding up and down the steps and my Burton style stockings barely fit me! But hey ..I tried!

I think I'd be a terrible witch. Firstly I'd have too many cats and owls and I can't kill anything so there goes the spooky spells :D

The pulsating life from above

More at my website

Experiment tonight.

A little over a year ago, I took a shot of some bagels I had baked that I really liked. The shot was taken in natural light, which isn't something I get to take advantage of a lot when I do food photography, but is usually pretty flattering when taking shots of food.

Tonight, I baked up a batch of bagels for the kids to bring to school tomorrow (they read a book called Jalapeno Bagels in class last week and I ended up being volunteered to bake, somehow.) I decided to see if I could recreate that shot I liked, but using strobes to light the scene instead. I think I managed to get the quality of light pretty darn close (although I did tweak the composition very slightly, and I didn't let the white balance skew quite as blue this time, both intentionally.)

Nikon D7000 w/Nikkor 18-200mm @ 50mm, 1/250s @ ƒ/8, ISO100. One SB-700 at 24mm zoom, 1/2 power, camera left and bounced off the ceiling in my kitchen for the overall diffuse light the shade lended to the original shot, and a second SB-700, 24mm zoom, 1/2 power, also camera left but shooting through a white umbrella directly toward the bagels, to get the diffuse-but-directional light causing the soft shadows in the original. Other than minor cropping and a slight boost to vibrance, this is straight off the camera.

I used to bake a dozen of these almost every weekend before the kids were born, and only 6 or 7 times a year now. After having one for dinner tonight, I think I need to add these back to a more regular rotation. I can tell i’m out of practice, as these weren’t quite as evenly sized, or as smooth-crusted, as I used to be able to get them (although now that I think about it, I was stuck using lower-protein flour than usual, which would impact the crust at least.)

This recipe started life as the bagel recipe in The Best Recipe from the folks at Cooks Illustrated, then modified to suit my tastes a bit (really should get around to that web site someday), and finally converted into the weights you see here, which is essentially a 60% hydration dough (or a 5:3 ratio of flour:liquid).

Ingredients

30 oz. high-protein flour (about 6 c.—I use the Sir Lancelot variety from King Arthur Baking)

15 oz. water (1 7/8 c.) at about 110°F

3 oz. barley malt syrup (3/8 c.)

2 1/4 tsp. active dry yeast (1 packet)

1 tbl. kosher salt

Directions

Combine the dry ingredients in the work bowl of a standing mixer fitted with the dough hook. Combine the malt syrup and water in a measuring cup and stir to combine.

Mix the dry ingredients on low speed until the yeast is mixed in well, then pour in the liquid. Continue mixing until a dough ball forms, then mix at low-medium speed for 10 minutes in the stand mixer. This is a real workout for my stand mixer, so keep an eye on yours to avoid it walking or overheating. When done, the dough will be smooth, only very slightly tacky, and easily pass the windowpane test. Remove from the mixer, form into a ball, cover with plastic wrap, and let rest for 5-10 minutes.

Cut dough into quarters, then cut each quarter into thirds (12 pieces total). Shape each into a bagel by rolling into a smooth ball, then poking your finger down through the middle and stretching out like an elastic band. Arrange the shaped dough on two half-sheet pans dusted with cornmeal, cover lightly with plastic wrap and a kitchen towel, and place in the refrigerator overnight to proof. They won't appear to rise much in the fridge; that's expected.

In the morning, preheat your oven to 450°F. In a large, deep skillet or a dutch oven, bring 2 quarts of water plus 2 tbl. of sugar or malt syrup to a boil (for darker bagels, as seen here, add a teaspoon or so of baking soda to the boil as well.)

Working with about 3 bagels at a time, gently stretch the bagels out so the hole is at least an inch in diameter, then boil for about 1 minute on each side. The bagels will puff up almost to their final size while being boiled. Return them to the sheet pan (with a little more cornmeal to prevent sticking).

If you want to put some sort of topping on your bagel, now's the time. The outside of the bagel is usually sticky enough for seeds and the like, but a little egg white can be used as glue if you want more insurance.

Put the sheet pans into your preheated oven in the upper-middle and lower-middle positions, and spray the inside of your oven with water to make a good amount of steam (or, leave a heavy skillet on the floor of the oven during your preheat, and pour in a half cup or so of ice water.) Bake 18-20 minutes until nicely browned, rotating the pans halfway through.

Transfer to a cooling rack. These are great still warm from the oven, and, once completely cool, will keep well stored in a plastic bag for 4-5 days, particularly if you're toasting them. They also freeze nicely.

En mi estadía en mar del Plata pude tomar varias fotografias de este joven amante del skate.

This past weekend I was in NYC for a very short work trip. But luckily had some time the night before I left, to get out and get some photos. Was cool to meet up with Mike Orso and Del after as well and thanks for the location tips! I have a lot of exploring to do in NY, this city is way to big. Hopefully after a few more work trips here I can get some variety.

Another shot of El Capitan reflected in the Merced River. I am told that these photos get more interesting when the river is lower and we can walk out to a sand bar - which is happening now. Been a dry spring and I'm afraid the waterfalls in Yosemite will dry up early.

Yosemite Valley has become quite crowded and many of the concession type things are going on - bike rentals, horseback rides, floats down the river, etc. - which is sad but at the same time I am glad to have gotten here early and spent a lot of time exploring the easy access places in the valley. Now I am seeking out the trails and getting off of the beaten path. Last weekend I took a ten mile hike and did not see one other person. I did hear some voices and turned and went the other way. By the time I hiked back into the campground, carrying all of that camera gear, I was dragging. I am trying to check off as many hikes as possible before I leave.

When the rash finally goes away I will probably be able to get back to editing and writing. The good news is that the biopsy showed an allergic reaction or viral infection, meaning it will go away. I am starting on round three of the steroids - they do say that third time is a charm. Though I proved that untrue in marriage, it was a disaster. Ahh, the long ago memories, I just celebrated 19 years of being a single woman! Not a bad accomplishment.

Such a nostalgic sight.

My mother was trapped overseas for the duration of the war and longed to see a sight like this. Now she gazes over the field and says 'Oh to Be in England' as she remembers her War time ordeal.

While we were at Yosemite for the big PhotoWalk, we took an evening to visit the Mariposa Woods. They were very close to our hotel, and it was an easier drive than going all the way to the main park at Yosemite. Plus, I had a feeling the sunset would be quite stunning through the trees. My feelings don't always work out, but this time it did.

My methods still haven't changed for these kinds of shots. Seven exposures: from +3 to -3 seems to get the job done. I end up with more than enough light for the post-processing.
